Kilworth GAA Club Notes 30 April 2026

OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY
Kilworth GAA Club extends a very warm invitation to all members and the wider community to join us for the official opening of our new clubhouse, community gym, and upgraded pitch facilities. The celebration will take place in just over two weeks’ time, on Saturday May 16th, from 2pm to 5pm at Kilworth GAA Club, and we are honoured that An tUachtarán CLG, Jarlath Burns, along with other distinguished guests, will join us to perform the official opening ceremony.
The development of these facilities represents a major milestone for both the club and the wider community. It is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and commitment shown by so many over recent years, and we are delighted to celebrate this achievement with everyone who has contributed and supported our vision along the way.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase our new facilities, unite as a club and community, and celebrate this important milestone, while recognising the valued support we have received from so many people. We sincerely hope everyone can join us for what promises to be a memorable and enjoyable afternoon.

PADDY WHELAN RIP
It was with great sadness last Sunday week that we learned of the extremely sad and untimely passing of our esteemed club Vice-President and true gentleman Paddy Whelan. Paddy was a much-valued member of our club, serving with distinction as Vice-President and formerly as club secretary, committee member, and mentor. He served as club secretary for a number of years in the early 1980’s, including the landmark year of 1980 when the Kilworth hurlers reached their third county final, as well as during the Centenary year of 1984. Paddy was also an invaluable contributor as a selector with many Kilworth teams, most notably with the successful 1985 junior football side that progressed to the clubs first football county final. At juvenile level, Paddy served a term as club chairperson and was also a representative to the North Cork board. Beyond the playing field, he captained the Kilworth Squash team, leading them to success at numerous tournaments, and also served as secretary of the Kilworth Sports Complex committee.
Paddy, affectionally known as the Judge, was an exceptionally knowledgeable man who took a genuine interest in all sports and was a lifelong, passionate supporter of both Kilworth and Cork GAA. His understanding extended far beyond the playing fields, he possessed a remarkable breadth of knowledge across a wide range of subjects, particularly local and national history, which he shared with enthusiasm and pride. A tremendous contributor to Scór na nÓg in his heyday, and an equally talented and gifted quizmaster, Paddy had a rare ability to engage, educate, and entertain in equal measure. It was always a pleasure to meet him, he was a true character whose conversations were enriched with wisdom, insight, and good humour. Above all else, Paddy was a devoted husband to Mary and a proud father to Liam, our current club player. His love for his family, his community, and his club was evident in all that he did, and his presence will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
The large crowd that gathered for his removal in Fermoy, followed by his Requiem Mass in St. Martin’s Church, Kilworth, and his burial in Kilcrumper New Cemetery, was a true testament to the esteem and respect in which he was held. The red and white Kilworth GAA flag draped upon his coffin, along with the guard of honour formed by GAA members, both past and present, as the cortege made its way to his final resting place, served as a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of himself to the club and community he loved.
Paddy left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to cross his path. He will be profoundly missed by all associated with the club, his wide circle of friends, and, most especially, his loving family. To his wife Mary, his son Liam, his daughter-in-law Dara, and his brother Dave together with the extended Whelan, McCarthy, and Glavin families we extend our deepest sympathies. May the sod lay lightly on your grave old friend. R.I.P.

Comrades in arms! Pictured in fine spirits, full of banter, and enjoying the celebrations at a Kilworth GAA social (circa 1990) are three proud Kilworth Gaels, (l-r) Paddy Whelan, Jimmy Hanlon, and Pad McCormack (all R.I.P.). Their camaraderie and commitment to club and community is fondly remembered as they are all now reunited above. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha dílse.
