U21 HURLERS DEFEATED

Last Saturday evening, September 27th, our U21 hurlers made the short commute to Ballyhooly to contest Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in the Quarter-Final of the Country Clean Recycling U21 B Hurling Championship. In a content which the western divisional side led from the start, two early goals conceded by Kilworth were regrettably imperative to the Gaels overall success in this fast paced encounter. Kilworth, who unfortunately had some notable key absentees from the squad through injury battled extremely hard throughout the hour and whilst they were solid displays of hurling by numerous individuals they were unable to keep up with the green, white, & gold coloured side as they emerged victors on a 4 point margin which brought the curtain down on the 2025 playing season for the club. Full time score: Kilworth 0-15, Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels 2-13.

Team & Scorers: Denis Riordan, Sean Moriarty, Gearoid Carey, Sean Murphy, Brian Dunne 0-01, Sean Óg Kenneally, Ronan Fenton, Michael Lenihan, Darragh Sheehan, Darragh Gill, Sean O’Flynn 0-02, Ben Carey, Aaron Browne 0-01, Liam Óg Hegarty 0-11 (0-06-f, 1-65”), & Patrick Kenny. Substitutes: Sean Flynn, Cian O’Regan, & Sam Beecher.

1980 & 1985 REUNION

Tomorrow night, Friday October 3rd, a get together is being held at the Village Inn Kilworth, to celebrate both the historic 1980 & 1985 Kilworth hurling and football teams. Briefly recapping these momentous events, the hurlers of 1980 reclaimed the North Cork Junior A championship title after a nine year lapse beating Castletownroche (who were going for three titles in a row) before going on to contest the county final against Newcestown but unfortunately came up three points short in a thrilling encounter at Páirc Úi Chaoimh, whilst the footballers of 1985 celebrate their 40 year anniversary of claiming the North Cork Junior B league and championship double against Fermoy and Liscarroll respectively. Also runners-up in the county final to Duhallow’s Kilbrin, this Kilworth array of players contested seventeen football games in all throughout the season with their only defeat coming in the county final at Mallow which is a tremendous achievement in itself. Please spread the word to everyone of this upcoming event!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

This throwback rewinds the clock back 40 years to 1985 as the Kilworth Junior B footballers hit the big time and reached the County Junior B football championship final for the very first time. Kilworth competed strongly in both codes throughout the season, however, following a 3 point defeat in the replayed North Cork Junior A hurling final to Clyda Rovers on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-6, which coincidently was the Mourneabbey clubs first ever North Cork hurling success, all efforts were made to make amends in the Junior B football decider against Liscarroll which Kilworth had also qualified for.

On the road to the North Cork (number one) football championship final Kilworth overcame the challenges of Two Pot House (Hazlewood) 1-8 to 0-5 in the 1st round on Sunday May 26th at Shanballymore followed by Abbey Rovers (Castletownroche) 1-11 to 0-9 in the semi-final on Saturday July 27th at Kildorrery. Liscarroll provided the opposition for the North Cork final which was played at Killavullen on September 25th with Kilworth coming out on top following a very testing hour on a final scoreline of 1-8 to 0-6 giving the “Brennan from the Moore” side their 4th North Cork victory at this grade.

Reports from the game state that whilst the Kilworth defence was under constant pressure they never once fumbled with goal-line clearances and last ditch tackles the order of the day. Goalkeeper John Joe Shanahan (R.I.P.) brilliantly stopped a first half penalty and after playing against the wind the half time scoreline read just two points apiece with Jim McCarthy and Pat Greehy on the dispensing end for the red and white coloured side. Kilworth however excelled upon the restart through a Kevin McCarthy point which was soon followed by an inspiring goal from Pat Greehy after a probing ball sent in from midfielder Jim McCarthy was flicked on by John Kenny to Greehy who had plenty time and space to kick the ball into the back of the Liscarroll net. Gerard Carey (R.I.P.) immediately added another point which sent Kilworth five points clear before Liscarroll clawed it back to three, but with further kicks from Jim McCarthy, Pat Greehy, Ger Carey and Ger Griffin (commonly known as the famous “Two-Four” since the 1981 victory over Ballyhooly) all sailing between the uprights before the full time whistle sounded, Kilworth ended the game worthy winners having not conceded any goal in the year’s North Cork championship. After the match jubilant Kilworth Captain and sharpshooter Ger Griffin received the trophy on behalf of his teammates with rumours of the celebrations extending into the early hours of Monday morning at a certain midfielders local establishment!

Having annexed North Cork, Kilworth received a bye in the 1st round of the county series and faced Shanagarry club, Russell Rovers, in the county semi-final which was played as part of a double header at Castlelyons on Sunday October 6th. The East Cork standard-bearers got a second bite at the cherry in this first class encounter as they scored a very late point to force a draw and send the game to a replay, however Kilworth didn’t leave this effect their appetite for success as they came out on top by 2 points in the replay seven days later which was again played at Castlelyons.

After two titanic struggles against their Imokilly counterparts, Kilworth made history by gaining their place in a football County Final of any grade since the formation of the club in 1928 with Duhallow’s Kilbrin providing the opposition in the finale. These two clubs who were better known for their hurling prowess both fancied their chances, but most divisional Gaels felt Kilworth who were remarkably unbeaten in all their big ball outings this season had the upper hand. Contested at Bishop Casey Memorial Park Mallow, Kilbrin (which is also the birthplace of Archbishop Dr. Croke), unfortunately came out on top in this decider by the narrowest of margins ending the fairytale year for this vibrant Kilworth contingent of players.

However, Kilworth’s season was still not over as there was the matter of the divisional league final up for grabs, and on Sunday December 29th Kilworth contested local neighbours Fermoy in a keenly contested decider coming out on top 1 point winners on a final scoreline of 1-7 to 2-3 at a well-kept Ballygiblin venue. This contest was much more than to decide the destination of the league title as it was also the meeting of the number one and two championship winners, and the difference between the sides at the end was Kilworth’s ability to attack and make much better use of the opportunities that came their way.

Leading by 3 points with time almost up Fermoy were awarded a controversial penalty which they duly converted to level proceedings. From the resulting kickout the ball broke to Jim McCarthy who solod a whopping 60 yards up-field before passing to Pat Greehy who was subsequently fouled leaving the pressure of a match winning free on the young shoulders of John Gallagher who was told he had to score direct. Displaying his maturity John cooly tapped the ball over the bar to bring the curtain down on a famous victory leaving Kilworth the undisputed 1985 North Cork Junior B League and Championship winners. Enroute to the league final Kilworth overcome Mallow in their semi-final encounter, after topping their group with victories over every team along the way which included Araglen, Ballyhooly, Mitchelstown, Glanworth, Grange, Fermoy, Killavullen, Kildorrery, and Doneraile.

Overall this array of players who were overseen on the sidelines by Mick Twomey, Paddy Whelan, & Lar Sheehan (R.I.P.) who was a club Vice President and also included club officers namely secretary and wing back Tom Twomey, PRO and corner forward Pat Greehy, & registrar/insurance officer and corner back Mossy McNamara, contested seventeen football games in all throughout the season with their only defeat coming in the county final at Mallow which was a tremendous achievement in itself. It must also be noted that this Kilworth team had plenty of youth on their side throughout the season which included many U21 players who had also qualified for their respective North Cork final but unfortunately went under to Milford on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-4. Coincidentally at this level, local Kilworth businessman Peter McCarthy (R.I.P.) (who was an ex-Milford man) had recently donated a new trophy to the North Cork board for this competition and as luck would have it, he was obliged to present the North Cork U21 Cup to the Milford winning Captain!

Pictured are the Kilworth Junior B Footballers who defeated Liscarroll in the North Cork Championship Final at Killavullen on Sunday September 25th, 1985.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U11 Hurling

The U11 hurlers made the short journey to Fermoy on Saturday morning to take part in the annual Tom Grumbridge Memorial Tournament. We took on a strong Fermoy side in our opening game and played very well in the first half to go in on level terms. After the break however Fermoy got the upper hand to run out deserving winners.

Our second game was against St. Dominics. Another very close first half saw the lead change hands on several occasions with St. Dominics leading by a goal at the half time whistle. The play was very even again after the break with the sides still on level terms entering the final 5 minutes. Unfortunately, a disallowed goal for our side was followed by 3 St. Dominics points to see them take the win.

The format of the competition saw all sides qualify for a final with our boys facing up against Kiltha Óg in the Div.3 decider. We played our best hurling of the morning in this game. Noah was excellent in goals, and our backs were very solid. We managed to get on top at midfield, and our forwards took their opportunities when they arrived which saw us over the line. After the game captain Luke McCrea, who led by example all morning, accepted the shield on behalf of his teammates. Thanks again to Fermoy for the invite to what was a great morning’s hurling.

Next up for the U11’s is a home football tie against Youghal this coming Sunday morning.

Pictured is Captain Luke McCrea receiving the Div.3 Shield after the U11 Hurling win in Fermoy last Saturday morning.

UPCOMING JUVENILE FIXTURE

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U11s Enjoy trip to Ballyhass

The U11s are into the last 4 weeks of a season that started out in mid-February. They have met over 70 times as a group this year including playing 25 games and it has to be said that their attendance and dedication have been fantastic. They love their hurling, football (and handball) and are a great bunch to deal with.

On Saturday last they took a well-deserved break from the playing fields as they made the trip across the division to Ballyhass near Mallow. Zip lining, crate stacking and pizza followed before the highlight of the aqua park to round off a great day out for the entire group. Sincere thanks to Joe & Trish Bonnar and Mark Hickey who along with the clubs covered the cost of the day. Thanks also to the coaches who provided transport to and from Ballyhass.

On field activities have also continued over the last number of weeks, across both codes, with excellent games against Killeagh and Fr O’ Neills in hurling, and Killavullen and Fermoy in football. The boys have been improving steadily all year and continue to show a willingness to learn and a great work ethic in training and games. On Sunday next, Fermoy have very kindly invited us to take part in the annual Tom Grumbridge U11 Hurling Memorial Tournament. This has proved to be a very well-run event over the last few of years and the boys are really looking forward to taking part.

Finally, best wishes to Odhran O Donoghue who suffered an injury in training on Thursday evening last. Odhran is a fine young player, and his tigerish attitude will be missed whilst he’s recovering for the next few weeks. Get well soon Odhran.

Kilworth GAA Notes 11 September 2025

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS BOW OUT

Last Sunday afternoon, September 7th, Kilworth once again returned to Pairc na Bride Rathcormac to contest Ballinhassig in their final group game of the 2025 Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship with the pinnacle prize of a Quarter-Final berth at minimum up for grabs to the winner. Kilworth opened the scoring in this fast paced encounter within thirty seconds of play through a Liam Óg Hegarty strike before Ballinhassig equalized seconds later with a carbon copy effort from the resulting puckout. Over the next eight minutes of play, Kilworth, who were playing with the advantage of a strong wind, really excelled forward and provided the spectators with some fine bouts of hurling as they converted five strikes in succession to extend their advantage on the Carrigdhoun divisional side.

Ballinhassig got their second point of the afternoon on the 10 minute mark through a converted free, but this was quickly cancelled out by Noel McNamara who pointed from play after an excellent first touch to restore Kilworth’s five point advantage. The blue and white colored side of Ballinhassig then slowly started to get a grip of proceedings as they crept their way back into contention and even after being reduced to 14 men they outscoring Kilworth six points to three albeit half of these efforts came from placed ball strikes. During this period Liam Óg was Kilworth’s main threat and sole representative in keeping the scoreboard alive but the wide count from both teams during the first 30 minutes of play was also a major telling factor in this encounter as Ballinhassig clocked up seven to Kilworth’s five. Half time score: Kilworth 0-10, Ballinhassig 0-08.

Kilworth were hit with a double blow upon the restart by Aghada referee Willie Wallace as following a half time schemozzle Liam Óg was sent to watch the second semester of play from the sidelines alongside manager Pat O’Brien who was also politely asked to take up a new external viewing point. Ballinhassig started the better of the sides upon the resumption of play and within seven minutes they secured four unanswered white flags to lead by two points for the first time in the contest. Jamie Sheehan then added a peach of a score from an acute angle which seemed to settle Kilworth, but after two more wides and multiple efforts dropping short, Ballinhassig once again availed of our misfortunes and hit the target to regain their two point lead on the three quarter mark.

Kilworth to their credit, determined to not throw in the towel, fought back hard and hit a badly needed purple patch which saw five consecutive points go our direction as we regained a three point advantage with just 10 minutes of play remaining. Ballinhassig, however, seemed to excel from this setback and over the remaining minutes kept Kilworth scoreless by converting three points in succession to put the teams back of level terms as the clock struck 60 minutes. Noely, who had now taken over free duties converted a placed ball which put Kilworth one point ahead in stoppage time, but Ballinhassig then got the rub of the green and within a minute had equalized before being awarded a final free which they duly pointed to conclude the afternoons proceedings. Full time score: Kilworth 0-17, Ballinhassig 0-18.

Team & Scorers: Killian Heggtveit, Michael Gowen, Kieran Lane, Austin O’Hara, Jeremy Saich, David Twomey, Pierce Riordan 0-01, Luke Carey, Eoin McGrath, Eoin Carey 0-02, Jamie Sheehan 0-02, Liam Óg Hegarty 0-06 (0-4f), Brian Sheehan, Noel McNamara 0-05 (0-4f), & William Condon 0-01. Substitutes used: Leo Coffey & Michael Sheehan.

JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL THIS SATURDAY

All roads lead to Killavullen this coming Saturday evening, September 13th, as Kilworth once again contest Newtownshandrum in the final of the Denis Gallagher Refrigeration JB2 Hurling Championship with throw in fixed for 5.30pm. Over the last five weeks, Kilworth overcame the challenges of Mallow (2-23 to 3-16), Ballyhea (2-16 to 0-10), and Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels (4-21 to 1-13) respectively in the group stages of this year’s competition, and with old rivals and 2024 competition runners-up Newtownshandrum now left standing in their way of re-capturing the throne, it is sure to be another very competitive fixture. The club would like to wish all the players, and their management team the very best of luck as they set out to secure the clubs eleventh title at this grade of hurling, so be sure to come along and support the lads in their pursuit of silverware.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

As the Kilworth Junior hurlers prepare for their North Cork JB2 hurling final this coming Saturday and seek to capture the clubs eleventh title at this grade, this throwback goes back ninety years to 1935 when the Kilworth junior hurlers captured the clubs first ever honours as they won the North Cork Novice Hurling Championship at Dromina’s expense. Following a semi-final exit to Marshalstown in the previous year’s campaign, Kilworth entered the 1935 season eager for redemption and after a positive league campaign along with some tournament action, Kilworth’s path to championship success began at Ballindangan on August 11th, when they convincingly beat Oldcastletown on a scoreline of 2-1 to nil. Due to adverse weather conditions in September of that year which left numerous pitches unplayable, Kilworth had to wait until early October for their next encounter as they overcame the spirited challenge of Killavullen, 6-3 to 4-2 which was played at Shanballymore. A week later, this time at the Killavullen hurling ground, Doneraile provided the opposition for the eastern area semi-final which Kilworth compellingly won on a scoreline of 8 goals to nil, sending Kilworth through to their first ever divisional final on Sunday October 27th at Doneraile’s hippodrome.

The following match report was published following the divisional finale:

“The day, although dry, was rather wild and the pitch was somewhat greasy owing to recent rains. Field arrangements were perfect and reflect great credit to the local Gaels. There was a fairly large mustering of spectators. Kilworth won the toss and played with the advantage of the strong wind. Dromina’s backs were prominent in the first half and succeeded in beating off the attack time and time again. At half time the scoreline stood – Kilworth 2-0; Dromina nil. Dromina were away to the attack on the resumption and had matters practically their own way in the half, but due to erratic shooting and faulty forward play owing to the Kilworth solid defense, they were denied the winning score. The final whistle found Kilworth winners on the score – Kilworth 4-0; Dromina 3-1. Mr. J. O’Brien, Treasurer North Cork Board had charge of the whistle.”

However, further events would conspire following the final as Dromina objected to the North Cork board of Kilworth being awarded the Novice Hurling final on the grounds that three players were not properly registered. At a special sitting of the North Cork Board in November at Doneraile town hall the Kilworth club representative explained that the men’s names were registered in Irish and therefore could be written in three separate ways. A committee was formed to deal with the case and after very short deliberations with both sides they unanimously agreed that this case was utter nonsense and subsequently awarded the match result to stand in Kilworth’s favor.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION THIS SUNDAY

This coming Sunday afternoon, September 7th, Kilworth once again return to Pairc na Bride Rathcormac, this time to contest Ballinhassig in their final group game of the 2025 Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship, with throw-in fixed for 2pm. This will be the fifth consecutive year that the teams will meet in championship action with the score currently lying at 2-2 between the sides. Last season’s encounter between the two sides which was played in Castlelyons was again a round three clash and unfortunately the final result on the day halted Kilworth advancement in the competition. As it currently stands, all four teams in the group share two points apiece having all won and lost a fixture with Kilworth lying on the bottom owing to scoring differences. The club would like to wish the best of luck to all the players and management involved in this winner takes all decider.

JUNIOR HURLERS ADVANCE TO NORTH CORK FINAL

Last Friday evening, August 29th, our junior hurlers travelled to Doneraile to contest Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in their third round fixture of the 2025 Denis Gallagher Refrigeration JB2 Hurling Championship. Kilworth dominated play throughout the first thirty minutes of play in this high scoring contest and with a total of twenty-eight shots which included nine wides they led comfortable at the interval on a scoreline of 4.15 to 0-04. However, some credit must be given to the evenings opposition as they never admitted defeat and upped their ante for the second half by adding an additional 1-09 to their tally. With nine different Kilworth players adding their names to the evenings score sheet throughout the contest it really was a concrete performance which sets the lads up nicely for the upcoming North Cork final against old rivals Newtownshandrum. Full time score: Kilworth 4-21, Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels 1-13.

After three highly impressive victories over Mallow, Ballyhea, and Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels respectively, Kilworth have once again booked their place in this year’s North Cork final and just like a repeat of last season, Newtownshandrum provide the opposition with the fixture date to be confirmed. The club would like to wish the best of luck to all the players and management involved in their preparations over the coming weeks ahead for this eagerly awaited clash.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U11 FOOTBALLERS IMPRESS

A downpour awaited the U11 footballers in Carrigtwohill on Saturday morning last when they landed for their football challenge game against the locals. Following weeks of dry weather, the rain took some getting used to. The boys adapted well after a slow start. The backs tightened up considerably after a couple of early opportunities for Carrig. We began to string some lovely passing movements together, moving the ball quickly from defense to attack and the forwards took their opportunities when they arrived. The game was nip and tuck and the selectors on both sides were thrilled with the attitude of their players in difficult conditions.

The Carrigtwohill club and mentors must be commended for their organization. Their impressive clubhouse was available to parents to watch the game away from the elements, their juvenile pitch was in fine order and the referee was organized to manage proceedings, which he did to aplomb. Bualadh bos to all concerned.

U14 HURLING

Our U14 hurling team had an uplifting victory over a talented, determined and well organized Carrigaline Team last Thursday night in front of a large supporting crowd, from both sides, the players delivered an enthralling game of a high standard with some great passages of play and great score taking. Playing against the Hill and wind in the first half we managed to slowly crawl our way back into the game before halftime, after Carrigaline had got off to a great start with an early goal and some excellent points. The Kilworth and Araglen team showed great determination and skill, as a collective unit, to slowly turn the early tide and get a foothold in the game. An early second half goal by Carrigaline raised their spirits, but we were up to the challenge thrown down and got back in front to end the game on a score line that did not reflect the closeness of the great game. Hugely encouraging was the mindset of the team as they all individually raised their game, and demonstrated what they can achieve. Fionnan, at full forward, gave a performance that shows what can be achieved with determination and correct mindset.

REBEL ÓG

There were several players from Kilworth involved with Rebel Óg, over the last few weeks, and played with distinction. Evan Gowen (pictured)) was part of the Cork U16 squad that defeated Kilkenny, Limerick, and WestMeath. Sean Riordan also competed in the U15 equivalent. In the U14 section, for Cork North Darragh Lynch, Micheal Quirke, JJ Cahill, and Tadhg Ahern contributed to the wins over two Tipperary teams, a Waterford side, lost to Limerick in Atrocious conditions, and went down gallantly to a defeat to a Mid Cork side in the Semi-Final of the Tony Forristal Cup. Ronan O’Driscoll also represented Cork North in a Blitz with the other Cork sections.

Kilworth GAA Notes 28 August 2025

THE LATE JOHN CAREY R.I.P.

We were all very saddened last week to hear of the sad passing of esteemed Kilworth native, club Vice President, former teammate, mentor, officer, and a much loyal friend to many, John Carey. John, both a fiercely proud family and Kilworth man was also a much noted GAA man in his playing days and won many accolades down through the years in both hurling and football including ultimate honours on two occasions. He played a prominent role in the Kilworth Junior A county winning hurling team of 1967 and also holds the prestigious Cork Senior Hurling Championship medal which was won with the Avondhu Senior Hurling team in 1966. John was also at the forefront in bringing football glory back to the club, and in 1964 he captained Kilworth to their first ever success with the round ball as they defeated the Sons of Liberty (who were a football team comprised from the Parish of Ballyclough and Kilbrin) to give Kilworth their first ever Novice football title.

John proudly donned the red and white Kilworth colours throughout his playing days always giving his utmost and was a major player at the heart of Kilworth’s great successes and inspirational teams during the 1960’s. From an early age John graced the GAA fields of North Cork and beyond, and he was a familiar figure to wear the Kilworth jersey during Kilworth’s golden age in the mid 1960’s collecting North Cork Junior A Hurling Championship titles in 1961, 1966, 1967, & 1971 against Kildorrery, Araglen, Freemount, and Liscarroll, respectively. The first of these memorable spectacles included inking his initials into the history books as part of the contingent of players that brought Kilworth their first ever North Cork Junior A Hurling title to become the kingpins of Avondhu.

However, the roller coaster year for John was to be 1966 as along with Kilworth claiming the North Cork Junior A League and Championship double over Newtownshandrum and Araglen respectively, he topped up on this success with a Senior County medal when as part of the Kilworth contingent composed of Johnny Hogan, Fred Sheedy (R.I.P.), Jerry Keating, Danny Fenton, Sean Long (R.I.P.), and Pad Coughlan (selector R.I.P.) he proudly wore the number four, black and amber coloured Ganzi of Avondhu to capture the Cork Senior Hurling Championship title with a one point victory over UCC.

The following year John once again played a central role with the Kilworth hurlers as following a North Cork final win over Freemount, they went on to capture the 1967 Cork County Junior A Hurling Championship title for the clubs very first time as they overcame Cloughduv at the Cork Athletic Grounds on a final scoreline of 3-11 to 2-07. Switching codes, John was also a very accomplished footballer who won North Cork Junior A Championships with Glanworth in 1962 as captain and again in 1963 defeating near neighbours Grange on both occasions and was fiercely unlucky to miss out on a County Senior Football Medal with Avondhu in 1961 due to injury.

A strong, dependable, and crisp striking player in his heyday, John was a versatile athletic whose judgement of the ball unhindered his capabilities to play in almost any position on the playing field and was one of the most prolific players over the years to don the Kilworth jersey. John’s playing career spanned across many decades and following his retirement he duly took up numerous roles both within the adult and juvenile clubs including a term as club chairperson of the adult club in the early 1970’s which coincided with the official opening of the now former GAA dressing rooms in 1972. Also a keen Golfer, John celebrated more success, this time with golf clubs instead of camán’s, when as part of the 1998 Fermoy Golf Club senior team they claimed the highly sought after All-Ireland Senior title which was played at Woodenbridge Golf Club in Co. Wicklow. A remarkable man with a legacy spanning across many generations, his sons and grandchildren continue to proudly represent the club today both on and off the GAA, Camogie, and LGFA fields of play.

The large crowd that turned out for his removal at his family home in Monadrishane, followed by his requiem mass in Saint Martin’s Church Kilworth, and burial in Kilcrumper new cemetery were testament to the respect that he held. With the red and white Kilworth flag draped on his coffin and the guard of honour that was formed by GAA, Camogie, & LFGA members, friends and colleagues, it was a fitting testament for the man himself, and he will be profoundly missed by everyone associated with the club, his wide circle of friends, and his loving family.

To John’s wife Mary, children Colm, Seán, & Brian and all of the extended Carey families, together with his wide circle of friends and neighbours we extend our deepest sympathies. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. R.I.P

THROWBACK THURSDAY

The following poem was composed by the late Christy Lucey (R.I.P.) after Kilworth’s 1967 Junior A Hurling Championship County Final victory over Cloughduv. Christy, a native of Castlemagnier, Duhallow was a great character, clubman, an excellent club head groundsman, and an equally great fundraising person for the club, and was highly involved within the club right up until his passing in 1994.

Kilworth’s first County Title – by Christy Lucey.

As I sat down one evening, I could see a picture clear,

At times it looked so far away and times it looked so near,

A picture of the Kilworth team in their vivid red and white,

To hang upon the bedroom wall and proudly think at night.

Yes, think of that glorious victory on a cold November day,

Although the weeks they have slipped by, it seems like yesterday,

We’ll never forget Johnny Hogan, with the County Cup in hand,

A big parade would follow, with the Fermoy Pipers Band.

Cloughduv took up the running when the ref threw in the ball,

They looked so good all around the field, and a backline like a wall,

I thought we’d need a storm, to shift and crack it wide,

When the half time whistle sounded, we were seven points behind.

But the second half it started, we took the time and all,

The red and whites they stormed in and busted down the wall,

A pass from Padraig Farren found Casey waiting there,

He hammered home a brilliant goal from just outside the square.

The forward line was rampant, and the scores they quickly came,

Dave Riordan struck top form, in that all important game,

Dinny Condon and Dick Carey cut loose with every fling,

Or the way in which Fred Sheedy went on solos up the wing.

Our backline will be spoken of, for many and many a day,

With Hogan, Russell and Seanie Long, they swung the game our way,

John Carey and Jim Condon kept the Kelly’s in control,

Lar Flynn, who starred as our full back, Liam Shanahan manned the goal.

At center field we had a pair, they never let us down,

Every ounce they gave us there, to help bring home the crown,

A substitute was introduced, Patsy Mahony was his name,

He quickly made his presence felt, with a goal in the frame.

So they won the County Title, their first in history,

The parish is quiet proud of them, and well they ought to be,

I’ll get the nail and hammer, put that picture on the wall,

In years to come we can look back, and that team we will recall.

MIXED RESULTS IN HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS SUFFER DEFEAT

Last Saturday evening August 16th, Kilworth travelled to Rathcormac to contest Ballincollig in their second round fixture of the 2025 Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. A physically strong and skillful Ronan Curran trained Ballincollig side were by far superior in this contest and dominated play with some fine set pieces throughout the hour. Trailing by 2-14 to 0-06 at the interval, after playing against a slight breeze, Kilworth had their work cut out to minimize the scoring gap between the sides for the remaining 30 minutes and to their credit they reduced the deficit to 12 points by scoring 1-08 to Ballincollig’s 9 points, but ultimately it was the Muskerry divisional side who were worthy winners come the final whistle. Full time score: Kilworth 1-14, Ballincollig 2-23.

In a contest that’s probably best put to one side, Kilworth now face old rivals Ballinhassig for a fifth consecutive season in round three, which is effectively a winner takes all game, and again takes place in Rathcormac on Sunday September 7th at 2pm.

Team & Scorers: Killian Heggtveit, Luke Carey, Kieran Lane, Austin O’Hara, Sean Óg Kenneally, David Twomey, Michael Gowen, Liam Whelan 0-01, Leo Coffey, Eoin Carey 0-02, Brian Sheehan, Jamie Sheehan 0-02, Liam Óg Hegarty 1-07 (1-p, 7-f), Noel McNamara 0-01, & Michael Sheehan 0-01. Substitutes used: Jeremy Saich, Ryan Jordan, Cormac Donnellan, & Sean Shanahan (Blood).

VICTORY FOR JUNIOR HURLERS

Attention quickly shifted to our Junior Hurlers as last Sunday August 17th, they travelled to Shanballymore to contest Ballyhea in their second round fixture of the 2025 Denis Gallagher Refrigeration JB2 Hurling Championship. In a contest that Kilworth led from start to finish, the lads battled extremely hard and with their excellent workrate they quickly went 4 points in front before Ballyhea were finally able to hit the target after 19 minutes played. It was then tit for tat hurling between the sides for the next 10 minutes with both teams raising two points apiece, until Thomas Twomey and Brian Tobin both bagged three pointers in quick succession leaving Kilworth comfortably in front at the interval. Half time score: Kilworth 2-06, Ballyhea 0-04.

The black and white coloured side hit the ground running upon the restart by converting 3 points in succession but Kilworth duly responded and by 40 minutes on Kildorrery referee Peter Watsons stopwatch they had claimed another 5 points extending their advantage to double digits. Ballyhea could only manage to successfully convert a further 3 scores for the remainder of the contest as Kilworth who were now playing some exciting hurling ploughed ahead and gained 5 more white flags to their favor before the final whistle sounded. Full time score: Kilworth 2-16, Ballyhea 0-10.

After two very impressive victories, Kilworth now face Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in round three which takes place next week, on Friday evening August 29th in Doneraile at 6.30pm, with another positive result guaranteeing a place in this year’s North Cork Final.

Team & Scorers: Sean Keane, Gearoid Carey, John Horgan, Sean Shanahan, Brian Dunne, Nathan Byrne, Denis Riordan 0-02, Michael O’Callaghan, Eoin McGrath 0-02, Anthony Sheehan, Brian Tobin 1-03, Daniel O’Regan 0-07 (7-f), Darragh Sheehan, Thomas Twomey 1-00, & Mark Carey 0-01. KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

ENCOURAGING DISPLAY FROM U11’s

Glorious sunshine welcomed the u11 hurlers to Cobh on Saturday morning last for a challenge game against the locals. Despite being short a few regulars due to holidays, the boys started well against a strong breeze. Tigerish defending ensured the east Cork side had to work hard for their scores, our midfielders were doing well, helping the defense and supporting the attack whilst our forwards maintained their shape and created a number of scoring chances. Turning to play with the elements in the second half, the selectors made a number of positional switches. The boys kept the work-rate up and finished out the game in impressive fashion, The panel of players on the day was Noah Dunne, Odhran O Donoghue, Jamie Evans, Hugh Hickey, Oisín Ryan, Liam Bonnar, Jack McNamara, Dylan Kenny, Ollie Higgins, Bobby Hegarty, Tom Aherne, Shayne Cremin, Luke McCrea, Micheál O Brien and James Hagarty.

Next up the boys welcome Mallow to Kilworth for a hurling challenge on Saturday morning.

Encouraging Display From U11's

JEKYLL & HYDE WEEK FOR U14’s

On Monday, August 11th, we faced table-topping Kiltha Óg in a must-win league game to progress to the semi-finals of the competition. Having previously lost to them in the Championship, we knew a significant collective improvement was necessary—and the team delivered spectacularly. Mickey’s “thou shall not pass” attitude and performance in goal, along with Jamie’s rock-solid display at full back, instilled confidence throughout the team from the start. It was a collective effort that will be fondly remembered as everyone ran, tackled, and showcased their skills throughout the game. We emerged well-deserved winners with a scoreline of 2-16 shared among several scorers. Most encouragingly, the panel demonstrated their capabilities and regained their bounce.

On Friday, August 15th, we played Fermoy at home with nothing at stake for either team except pride. It’s a game Kilworth can reflect on with regret; despite scoring 20 points, we still managed to lose to a dogged, determined, and skillful Fermoy side that proved goals win matches by scoring 5-7. Congratulations to Fermoy, it seems this local rivalry will have many more exciting games in the future. This Kilworth team has shown great resilience, and we are confident they will bounce back from this defeat to demonstrate their potential in the knockout stages of their upcoming league and championship matches.

JUNIOR HURLERS CONTINUE CLUBS WINNING STREAK

Last week, on Tuesday evening August 5th, Kilworth travelled to Castletownroche to contest Mallow in their first round opening fixture of the 2025 Denis Gallagher Refrigeration JB2 Hurling Championship. Mallow were first to register a score in this high scoring encounter which yielded the umpires to wave a whopping 44 flags in total, as within the first minute of play they had the sliotar buried in the back of the Kilworth net following a well worked passage of play. Kilworth, however, replied immediately when a Michael O’Callaghan shot sailed between to posts which helped settle Kilworth’s nerves. Mallow then continued to dominate play over the next 10 minutes by adding a further 1-03 to their tally until Kilworth settled and after a few key positional changes, they bagged their first goal of the evening when after a tussle in the Mallow square, corner forward Darragh Sheehan found himself on the dispensing end of a Kilworth three pointer.

With 13 minutes now on Ballyhea referee Ciarán O’Regan’s stopwatch Mallow still held the advantage leading by 2-03 to 1-03, but this would soon change as Kilworth dug deep and kept Mallow scoreless for the next 15 minutes of play. During this purple patch period Kilworth really excelled, firstly, after a nicely timed Thomas Twomey offload Sean Beecher added Kilworth’s second goal of the evening, along with 6 points combined between Brian Tobin, Sean Beecher, Anthony Sheehan, and the ever consistent free taker Daniel O’Regan. Both teams then finished off the first half by converting two scores apiece including a long range point from midfielder Daniel O’Regan which left us leading by 6 points at the interval. Half time score: Kilworth 2-11, Mallow 2-05.

Just like a repeat of the opening half Mallow were once again first to hit the target upon the resumption of play before Daniel O’Regan got Kilworth back on track 3 minutes later when he was again called upon to strike over a placed ball. However, the red and yellow coloured Mallow side excelled over the next 10 minutes and having landed a cracking goal from a well struck 21 yard free along with 5 points all from play, Kilworth’s could only reply with 4 converted points which reduced our leading margin back to 2 points upon the three quarter mark.

It was really tit for tat hurling between both sides up until the 58th minute with nothing separating the sides bar efforts from Daniel O’Regan on free taking duty and substitute Justin Aherne, who having been lured back to championship action after a few years sabbatical, left his presence know when his well taken 50 yard shot sailed between the uprights. Kilworth however, with their never say die attitude, just like last year’s North Cork final at the very same venue, hit for home with minutes remaining and with exceptional scores from the fast paced substitute Ryan Jordan, club veteran Brian Tobin, and a sublime sideline cut taken by Michael O’Callaghan, held a solid 4 point advantage upon the final whistle. Full time score: Kilworth 2-23, Mallow 3-16.

It must be noted that the Castletownroche venue was in excellent condition for this fixture, and they must be commended for having their facilities, scoreboard, and pitch in fine order. Next up, Tony’s Troops face old rivals Ballyhea (who also had an impressive first round victory) in round two which takes place this coming Sunday August 17th in Shanballymore at 12pm.

Team & Scorers: Sean Keane, Gearoid Carey, Sean Shanahan, Conor White, Brian Dunne, Nathan Byrne, Denis Riordan, Michael O’Callaghan 0-03 (1-sl), Daniel O’Regan 0-11 (0-09-f, 1-65”), Anthony Sheehan 0-01, Brian Tobin 0-03, Mark Carey, Sean Beecher 1-01, Thomas Twomey, & Darragh Sheehan 1.01. Substitutes used: Ryan Jordan 0-02, Kieran Twomey, Justin Aherne 0-01, Michael Lenihan, & Sean Moriarty.

Kilworth GAA Notes 07 August 2025

SUCCESSFUL CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER FOR INTERMEDIATE HURLERS

Last Thursday evening July 31st, Kilworth travelled to the seaside town of Youghal to contest Castlemartyr in the opening round of the 2025 Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. Playing against a strong breeze for the opening thirty minutes in front of a large consortium of travelling supporters Kilworth initially struggled to keep up with Castlemartyr’s fast paced attacking riddim and after fifteen minutes of play they trailed the Imokilly divisional side by 8 points with the scoreboard reading 1-07 to 0-02. A desperately needed placed ball point on the sixteenth minute by Liam Óg Hegarty ignited Kilworth’s fightback and further scores by Captain Eoin Carey and center forward Brian Sheehan minutes later reduced the deficit back to 5 points after 20 minutes played.

Corner forward William Condon unfortunately picked up a nasty injury resulting in his retirement from play, but his replacement Michael Sheehan immediately hit the ground running and quickly notched up 3 points from play within eight minutes which were all instrumental to Kilworth’s victory. Eoin Carey who lined out at wing forward added a second score to his tally and along with further scores from play by Jamie Sheehan and Liam Óg respectively Kilworth after playing against the strong breeze trailed their opponent’s by just a mere goal at the interval. Half time score: Kilworth 0-11, Castlemartyr 1-11.

Kilworth donning their Mike Walsh Pharmacy sponsored black coloured jerseys due to a colour clash between the sides continued to excel upon the restart as within 40 seconds on the clock a shot by Jamie Sheehan blasted the back of the Castlemartyr net putting the sides back on level terms. The East Cork side responded by adding 2 scores from play minutes later but that would be the final time they led in the contest as Kilworth’s defence led by veteran full back Kieran Lane worked in overdrive for the remaining 25 minutes of play.

With plenty words of wisdom issued from manager Pat O’Brien, Kilworth really laid down a strong marker as they kept their opponents scoreless for the next 24 minutes of play. Kilworth edged away at the scoreboard during this period, with five consecutive placed ball strikes by the accurate Liam Óg all raising white flags and held a 3 point advantage with just seven minutes of play remaining. Castlemartyr however, claimed 2 further points leading up to the final whistle, but these were both quickly cancelled out, firstly from a peach of a strike by substitute Cormac Donnellan and finally a converted sideline cut fifty yards out by Eoin Carey deep into injury time left Tucky’s Tigers with a three point cushion upon Éire Óg referee Diarmuid Kirwan’s final whistle. Full time score: Kilworth 1-18, Castlemartyr 1-15.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

BUSY FORTNIGHT FOR U11’S

The past fortnight has been exceptionally busy for our U11 squad. It began with hosting Killavullen in a hurling challenge game which was played in Kilworth on Saturday, followed by a football activity day at Páirc Ui Chaoimh the next Tuesday. During this event, they played three games against teams from Cork (Midleton & St. Nicks) and Waterford (St Marys). Two days later, on Thursday, they returned to headquarters for the hurling equivalent, facing sides from Waterford (Lismore) and Tipperary (Fethard & Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams). The week continued with internal games on Saturday morning and bank holiday Monday. Tonight, they travel to Fermoy for a hurling challenge against our neighbors. Despite the hectic schedule, it’s all part of the fun! The activity days at Páirc Ui Chaoimh were excellently organized by our GDAs and included a stadium tour where the boys sat in the home dressing room, visited the gym used by Cork players, and participated in a Q&A session with former Cork Senior Hurler Mick Daly in the media room. Hopefully, there will be many more memorable days for these boys in one of the best stadiums in the country.

Busy Fortnight For U11's

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

A nail-biting first-round championship match unfolded in Grenagh’s impressive new facilities under ideal conditions on Wednesday 23/7/2025. Referee Patrick John Coughlan initiated the game, and we started supported by a strong breeze. Despite opening the scoring and maintaining even possession, we went behind by four points due to Grenagh’s slick passing and brilliant score-taking. The situation appeared dire when our Captain Killian Watts was forced off after just 15 minutes. What followed was a remarkable turnaround. Galvanized by the loss we intensified our efforts and dominated both possession and field position for the next half hour, spanning either side of halftime. By the interval, we led 1-9 to 0-6. Highlights during this period included clinical finishing from Danny Kenneally and Con Rielly, precise kicking from Dan Fitzgerald and Kevin Reidy, coupled with impressive running from Denis O’Riordan, Mike Lenihan, and Cathal Burdette. Defensively,  Adam Duggan marshaled a committed display with Sam Beecher, Sam O’Brien, and Kevin Maher constantly involved. The loss of the excellent Alex O’Flynn at halftime began to take its toll towards the end of the game as Grenagh’s impressive free-taker scored several long-range points. A late goal from Grenagh added tension to the thrilling contest. However, Darragh Kellaway’s inspired save, dogged defending from Sean O’Riordan, and Ronan Fenton’s efforts stemmed the tide. The siege was lifted by strong runs from Sean Murphy at wing back, great hold-up plays from Kuba Coismak, and constant pressure from Sean Kelleher. The final whistle saw us secure victory after a rollercoaster of a game filled with fine football action. Full time score: Kilworth Araglen Óg 2-12, Grenagh 1-13.
