INTERMEDIATE HURLERS FALL SHORT
Last Sunday afternoon, September 6th, Kilworth returned to Páirc Uí Rinn for their final group game in the 2026 Co-Op Superstores sponsored Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship, where they faced Carrigaline in a thrilling nine-goal encounter which was played in windy wet conditions. Carrigaline opened the scoring in what would prove to be a high-scoring contest, but Kilworth responded immediately when Jamie Sheehan found the net in the second minute of play to gain an early advantage. Liam Óg Hegarty from placed balls and Carrigaline then exchanged a brace of points before Carrigaline struck their first goal of the contest on the 10-minute mark to regain the lead by the narrowest of margins.
Kilworth however, responded in style just two minutes later as centre-back Luke Carey embarked on a surging solo run before rattling the net to once again restore Kilworth’s advantage. Both sides then continued to trade points throughout the second quarter which included a 70-yard peach of a strike from wing-back David Twomey and after 22 minutes played, the sides were level for the first time. However, Kilworth finished the opening half the strongest as they outscored Carrigaline by five points to three in the closing stages courtesy of Eoin Carey (2), Jamie Sheehan, Noel McNamara, and Liam Óg Hegarty to hold a two-point advantage at the water-break. Half-time score: Kilworth 2-10, Carrigaline 1-11.
Kilworth emerged from the interval with high hopes of pushing on, but Carrigaline in dominant fashion quickly seized control. A devastating spell saw them register 1-04 without reply to quickly turn the game on its head as they established a five-point advantage. By the 48th minute of play, the Carrigdhoun divisional side had stretched their lead to eleven points, with Kilworth managing just two scores during this period through Eoin Carey and another Liam Óg Hegarty placed ball. To their credit, Kilworth refused to surrender and digging deep, they produced a remarkable fightback during the final quarter. Corner forward Noel McNamara struck twice for crucial goals, while Captain Eoin Carey drilled home a 21-yard free to the Carrigaline net with just two minutes remaining.
This scoring burst reduced Kilworth’s deficit to just three points reigniting hopes of a comeback, with Kilworth now within touching distance of a draw that would have secured qualification for the knockout stages. However, Carrigaline responded when it mattered most as they hit four unanswered points in stoppage time, halting Kilworth’s momentum and ultimately securing a seven-point victory. While defeated, Kilworth can take consolation from preserving their Premier Intermediate status, as despite finishing bottom of the group, they avoided the relegation play-off by a single point after a campaign in which they remained competitive until the very end. This coming Sunday afternoon, September 13th at 4pm, CLG Chill Uird will play host to St. Finbarr’s and Mallow in their third-round clash of the McCarthy Insurance Group sponsored Cork Premier Senior Football Championship. The club would like to remind patrons to expect an extra-large volume of traffic in the vicinity during this timeframe and also that ample parking facilities are available directly opposite the pitch grounds. There was no winner of last week’s lotto jackpot of €4,400 held on Monday August 31st. The numbers drawn were: 12, 20, 30, & 32. The lucky dip winner of €50 was Peg Sheedy c/o Patsy O’Mahony.
