MIXED RESULTS IN HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS SUFFER DEFEAT

Last Saturday evening August 16th, Kilworth travelled to Rathcormac to contest Ballincollig in their second round fixture of the 2025 Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. A physically strong and skillful Ronan Curran trained Ballincollig side were by far superior in this contest and dominated play with some fine set pieces throughout the hour. Trailing by 2-14 to 0-06 at the interval, after playing against a slight breeze, Kilworth had their work cut out to minimize the scoring gap between the sides for the remaining 30 minutes and to their credit they reduced the deficit to 12 points by scoring 1-08 to Ballincollig’s 9 points, but ultimately it was the Muskerry divisional side who were worthy winners come the final whistle. Full time score: Kilworth 1-14, Ballincollig 2-23.

In a contest that’s probably best put to one side, Kilworth now face old rivals Ballinhassig for a fifth consecutive season in round three, which is effectively a winner takes all game, and again takes place in Rathcormac on Sunday September 7th at 2pm.

VICTORY FOR JUNIOR HURLERS

Attention quickly shifted to our Junior Hurlers as last Sunday August 17th, they travelled to Shanballymore to contest Ballyhea in their second round fixture of the 2025 Denis Gallagher Refrigeration JB2 Hurling Championship. In a contest that Kilworth led from start to finish, the lads battled extremely hard and with their excellent workrate they quickly went 4 points in front before Ballyhea were finally able to hit the target after 19 minutes played. It was then tit for tat hurling between the sides for the next 10 minutes with both teams raising two points apiece, until Thomas Twomey and Brian Tobin both bagged three pointers in quick succession leaving Kilworth comfortably in front at the interval. Half time score: Kilworth 2-06, Ballyhea 0-04.

The black and white coloured side hit the ground running upon the restart by converting 3 points in succession but Kilworth duly responded and by 40 minutes on Kildorrery referee Peter Watsons stopwatch they had claimed another 5 points extending their advantage to double digits. Ballyhea could only manage to successfully convert a further 3 scores for the remainder of the contest as Kilworth who were now playing some exciting hurling ploughed ahead and gained 5 more white flags to their favor before the final whistle sounded. Full time score: Kilworth 2-16, Ballyhea 0-10.

After two very impressive victories, Kilworth now face Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in round three which takes place next week, on Friday evening August 29th in Doneraile at 6.30pm, with another positive result guaranteeing a place in this year’s North Cork Final.

CONGRATULATIONS SHANE

Comhghairdeas to clubman Shane O’Brien who last Sunday morning once again claimed All-Ireland Handball championship glory by winning the 2025 Softball Men’s Masters B Singles All-Ireland Final competition. Played at the Lahorna Handball Club in Tipperary, Shane compellingly defeated his Cavan opponent Eddie Halligan 13-21, 21-5, 11-1 in the final. Well done on another fantastic achievement Shane and enjoy the well-deserved celebrations!

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

ENCOURAGING DISPLAY FROM U11’s

Glorious sunshine welcomed the u11 hurlers to Cobh on Saturday morning last for a challenge game against the locals. Despite being short a few regulars due to holidays, the boys started well against a strong breeze. Tigerish defending ensured the east Cork side had to work hard for their scores, our midfielders were doing well, helping the defense and supporting the attack whilst our forwards maintained their shape and created a number of scoring chances. Turning to play with the elements in the second half, the selectors made a number of positional switches. The boys kept the work-rate up and finished out the game in impressive fashion, The panel of players on the day was Noah Dunne, Odhran O Donoghue, Jamie Evans, Hugh Hickey, Oisín Ryan, Liam Bonnar, Jack McNamara, Dylan Kenny, Ollie Higgins, Bobby Hegarty, Tom Aherne, Shayne Cremin, Luke McCrea, Micheál O Brien and James Hagarty.

Next up the boys welcome Mallow to Kilworth for a hurling challenge on Saturday morning.

JEKYLL & HYDE WEEK FOR U14’s

On Monday, August 11th, we faced table-topping Kiltha Óg in a must-win league game to progress to the semi-finals of the competition. Having previously lost to them in the Championship, we knew a significant collective improvement was necessary—and the team delivered spectacularly. Mickey’s “thou shall not pass” attitude and performance in goal, along with Jamie’s rock-solid display at full back, instilled confidence throughout the team from the start. It was a collective effort that will be fondly remembered as everyone ran, tackled, and showcased their skills throughout the game. We emerged well-deserved winners with a scoreline of 2-16 shared among several scorers. Most encouragingly, the panel demonstrated their capabilities and regained their bounce.

On Friday, August 15th, we played Fermoy at home with nothing at stake for either team except pride. It’s a game Kilworth can reflect on with regret; despite scoring 20 points, we still managed to lose to a dogged, determined, and skillful Fermoy side that proved goals win matches by scoring 5-7. Congratulations to Fermoy, it seems this local rivalry will have many more exciting games in the future. This Kilworth team has shown great resilience, and we are confident they will bounce back from this defeat to demonstrate their potential in the knockout stages of their upcoming league and championship matches.

SUCCESSFUL CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER FOR INTERMEDIATE HURLERS

Last Thursday evening July 31st, Kilworth travelled to the seaside town of Youghal to contest Castlemartyr in the opening round of the 2025 Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. Playing against a strong breeze for the opening thirty minutes in front of a large consortium of travelling supporters Kilworth initially struggled to keep up with Castlemartyr’s fast paced attacking riddim and after fifteen minutes of play they trailed the Imokilly divisional side by 8 points with the scoreboard reading 1-07 to 0-02. A desperately needed placed ball point on the sixteenth minute by Liam Óg Hegarty ignited Kilworth’s fightback and further scores by Captain Eoin Carey and center forward Brian Sheehan minutes later reduced the deficit back to 5 points after 20 minutes played.

Corner forward William Condon unfortunately picked up a nasty injury resulting in his retirement from play, but his replacement Michael Sheehan immediately hit the ground running and quickly notched up 3 points from play within eight minutes which were all instrumental to Kilworth’s victory. Eoin Carey who lined out at wing forward added a second score to his tally and along with further scores from play by Jamie Sheehan and Liam Óg respectively Kilworth after playing against the strong breeze trailed their opponent’s by just a mere goal at the interval. Half time score: Kilworth 0-11, Castlemartyr 1-11.

Kilworth donning their Mike Walsh Pharmacy sponsored black coloured jerseys due to a colour clash between the sides continued to excel upon the restart as within 40 seconds on the clock a shot by Jamie Sheehan blasted the back of the Castlemartyr net putting the sides back on level terms. The East Cork side responded by adding 2 scores from play minutes later but that would be the final time they led in the contest as Kilworth’s defence led by veteran full back Kieran Lane worked in overdrive for the remaining 25 minutes of play.

With plenty words of wisdom issued from manager Pat O’Brien, Kilworth really laid down a strong marker as they kept their opponents scoreless for the next 24 minutes of play. Kilworth edged away at the scoreboard during this period, with five consecutive placed ball strikes by the accurate Liam Óg all raising white flags and held a 3 point advantage with just seven minutes of play remaining. Castlemartyr however, claimed 2 further points leading up to the final whistle, but these were both quickly cancelled out, firstly from a peach of a strike by substitute Cormac Donnellan and finally a converted sideline cut fifty yards out by Eoin Carey deep into injury time left Tucky’s Tigers with a three point cushion upon Éire Óg referee Diarmuid Kirwan’s final whistle. Full time score: Kilworth 1-18, Castlemartyr 1-15.

Next up Kilworth face Ballincollig in round two which takes place in Rathcormac on Saturday August 16th at 6.30pm.

Kilworth festival is now in full swing so please continue to show your support where possible as this fundraiser for the new GAA dressing room and community gym complex will benefit everyone in the future. This Friday evening sees the famous festival show at the marquee which is followed on Saturday by a “Night of Darts”. Finally, on Sunday “Fair in the Square” returns which kicks off with the Fancy Dress Parade starting at 1.30pm followed by the usual entertainment which has something on offer for everyone. KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

BUSY FORTNIGHT FOR U11’S

The past fortnight has been exceptionally busy for our U11 squad. It began with hosting Killavullen in a hurling challenge game which was played in Kilworth on Saturday, followed by a football activity day at Páirc Ui Chaoimh the next Tuesday. During this event, they played three games against teams from Cork (Midleton & St. Nicks) and Waterford (St Marys). Two days later, on Thursday, they returned to headquarters for the hurling equivalent, facing sides from Waterford (Lismore) and Tipperary (Fethard & Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams). The week continued with internal games on Saturday morning and bank holiday Monday. Tonight, they travel to Fermoy for a hurling challenge against our neighbors. Despite the hectic schedule, it’s all part of the fun! The activity days at Páirc Ui Chaoimh were excellently organized by our GDAs and included a stadium tour where the boys sat in the home dressing room, visited the gym used by Cork players, and participated in a Q&A session with former Cork Senior Hurler Mick Daly in the media room. Hopefully, there will be many more memorable days for these boys in one of the best stadiums in the country.

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

A nail-biting first-round championship match unfolded in Grenagh’s impressive new facilities under ideal conditions on Wednesday 23/7/2025. Referee Patrick John Coughlan initiated the game, and we started supported by a strong breeze. Despite opening the scoring and maintaining even possession, we went behind by four points due to Grenagh’s slick passing and brilliant score-taking. The situation appeared dire when our Captain Killian Watts was forced off after just 15 minutes. What followed was a remarkable turnaround. Galvanized by the loss we intensified our efforts and dominated both possession and field position for the next half hour, spanning either side of halftime. By the interval, we led 1-9 to 0-6. Highlights during this period included clinical finishing from Danny Kenneally and Con Rielly, precise kicking from Dan Fitzgerald and Kevin Reidy, coupled with impressive running from Denis O’Riordan, Mike Lenihan, and Cathal Burdette. Defensively,  Adam Duggan marshaled a committed display with Sam Beecher, Sam O’Brien, and Kevin Maher constantly involved. The loss of the excellent Alex O’Flynn at halftime began to take its toll towards the end of the game as Grenagh’s impressive free-taker scored several long-range points. A late goal from Grenagh added tension to the thrilling contest. However, Darragh Kellaway’s inspired save, dogged defending from Sean O’Riordan, and Ronan Fenton’s efforts stemmed the tide. The siege was lifted by strong runs from Sean Murphy at wing back, great hold-up plays from Kuba Coismak, and constant pressure from Sean Kelleher. The final whistle saw us secure victory after a rollercoaster of a game filled with fine football action. Full time score: Kilworth Araglen Óg 2-12, Grenagh 1-13.

TONY FORRESTAL CUP

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U12 HURLING LEAGUE

On Wednesday evening our Kilworth Araglen Óg U12’s played some great hurling against a strong St Dominics team. The game was played in Araglen pitch in the backdrop of a hive of activity with NewsTalk Radio interviewing the Cork and Tipp fans capturing the rivalry and banter across the Araglen club ahead of the clash on Sunday. St Dominics dominated the first half scoring 2:6 to Kilworth Araglen Óg’s 1:3 with St Dominic’s playing some great hurling all across the pitch. While Kilworth Araglen Óg played some great flowing hurling, St Dominics closed them down and defended scoring opportunities by Kilworth Araglen Óg. The 2nd half started with Kilworth Araglen Óg scoring some great goals. The lads were now very focused and fielding some great hurling and attacking every ball. The subs rolling on and off right through the game had an impact to keep St Dominics to only one score in the 2nd half. The game finished with Kilworth Araglen Óg turning it around to win comfortably 5:7 to 3:6.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

CUL CAMP 2025

192 kids, 57 coaches, 4 & ¾ days of glorious sunshine, loads of hurling & football, a little bit of rounders, the ever-popular obstacle course and 1 gigantic water fight. The past week saw the annual start of the summer holidays for the boys and girls of Kilworth and Araglen with another brilliant week of Cul Camp.

The week started on Monday morning with about an hour of light rain, however by 11 o clock the sun was out, and it didn’t leave us again until the weeks events had come to an end. Over the last few years, we have been fortunate to have the club coaches from Kilworth & Araglen GAA Clubs, Kilworth Camogie and Kilworth LGFA clubs take time off work to run the weeks activities. Whilst the main objective is to ensure the boys and girls enjoy themselves, the experienced coaches also ensure that the skills of hurling, camogie and football are interwoven through all activities and by the end of the week the improvement in all groups is clear to be seen.

The kids themselves get a real kick out of the week and the demand each year continues to increase. This years 192 attendees is the largest number we have been able to cater for over the last few years and sincere thanks is due to all coaches and assistants for ensuring we were able to exceed the ratio’s set down by Croke Park.

U11s HOST BISHOPSTOWN

City club Bishopstown made the trip to Kilworth on the last Saturday of June for an U11 hurling challenge game. Bishopstown brought two teams and 4 games in all took place. The standard on show was very high with some excellent passing, support play and tackling on display. The coaches from both sides were thrilled with the workout and a return trip is on the cards for later in the summer.

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

Our annual Kilworth GAA club Golf Classic took place last Friday June 20th at Fermoy Golf Club with 50 teams competing in sublime weather conditions. The club would like to sincerely thank Blackwater Motors Cork, Fermoy, & Skibbereen who came onboard again this year as the events main sponsor, your continued loyal support is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to Fermoy Golf club for facilitating this event again this year, the setting and course was impeccable, and it is great credit to all the staff involved. NO JOY IN BALLYANLEY

Last week, on Tuesday evening, June 17th, after a short four day turnaround, our Premier Intermediate hurlers travelled to Páirc Dhónaill Uí Cheallacháin Ballyanley to contest Inniscarra in their eight round fixture of the Red FM sponsored Division 4 Hurling League. This game really was a game of two halves with Kilworth thriving for the first 30 minutes and including some excellent set pieces throughout they led by three points at the interval. However, in the latter half, the evenings opposition really got a grip on proceedings and dominated play by outscoring Kilworth twelve points to five to come out on top at the full time whistle with a four point victory.

After Inniscarra opened the scoring in the second minute of play Kilworth immediately responded and through points from Eoin Carey and the Sheehan cousins, Jamie and Brian who lined out at centre and wing forward respectively, they had regained the lead on the five minute mark. It was tit for tat hurling between the sides over the next 10 minutes and through further white flags from William Condon, Liam Óg Hegarty (65”), and midfielder Eoin Carey Kilworth led by seven points to five after 16 minutes played.

However, the Muskerry side then hit a brief purple patch and over the next 7 minutes they outscored Kilworth by three points to gain a two point advantage, with Leo Coffey the sole representative to add his initials to the evenings score sheet for the travelling side. The remining minutes of play were exhilarating as Kilworth regained momentum over the Senior A divisional side and through additional points from Brian Sheehan, Eoin, and Liam Óg the sides shared the spoils before a last minute astute strike from corner forward Liam Óg hit the Inniscarra net giving Kilworth a three point vantage at the interval. Half time score: Kilworth 1-11, Inniscarra 0-11.

Kilworth hit the ground running upon the restart and Jamie Sheehan immediately had the umpire going in the direction of a white flag when his shot hit the target after 30 seconds of play. The sides then swapped a further two points apiece as Kilworth held a 1-14 to 0-12 lead on the 36th minute of play before the blue and white striped coloured side started to dominate proceedings with six consecutive white flags raised without reply.

A Liam Óg converted free on the 53rd minute gave Kilworth hope as just one point now separated the sides with 7 minute of play remaining. However, Inniscarra dug deep for the remainder of play and added a further four points to Kilworth’s one and in doing so registered a four point win upon the final whistle with notably just one of their scores over the hour coming from a placed ball strike. Full time score: Kilworth 1-16, Inniscarra 0-23.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U14 HURLING

Our U14 Hurling team had a very satisfying victory over a spirited Éire Óg team last Thursday evening in Kilworth. Having narrowly lost out to Qualifying for the County Cup, this team are determined to show up well in the challenge cup. On a windy, but pleasant evening, we managed to get ahead early, and despite Éire Óg having a goal blitz before half time, we managed to stay ahead and built on the lead in the second half to run out winners. Several of our players showed up well in new positions, and with the correct mindset, this talented team are showing that they could go well during the remainder of the season.
