Kilworth GAA Notes 19 June 2025

VICTORY FOR INTERMEDIATE HURLERS

Last Friday evening, June 13th, after a four week layoff, our Premier Intermediate hurlers were back in action as they welcomed Kildorrery to the club grounds for their seventh round fixture of the Red FM sponsored Division 4 Hurling League. Kilworth opened the scoring in this highly entertaining encounter which was played in the main pitch through a fine strike by wing back Sean Óg Kenneally before the visitors who were wearing their traditional blue coloured jerseys responded with two quick points in succession. Corner forward Cormac Donnellan then got the first of his two impressive scores of the contest after 5 minutes played before Kilworth hit a purple patch through scores from William Condon, Sean Óg, and center-back David Twomey. The boys from the hill, however, swiftly responded by raising three white flags on their own and held a three point advantage on the 17 minute mark.

Liam Óg, who had just completed his leaving certificate exams, converted Kilworth’s first free of the evening a minute later which was swiftly followed by a goal through a beautifully taken ground strike from inform full forward Noel McNamara as Kilworth assumed control of the contest. Both sides then hit a further two points apiece before the interval with the Kilworth scorers coming from the sticks of Liam Óg and Noely, respectively. Half time score: Kilworth 1-09, Kildorrery 0-10.

Selector Darren Kenny’s half time uisce bottle most definitely contained some form of magic within its contents as Kilworth got off to a dream start upon the resumption of play. Liam Óg was first off the mark for the home side as within thirty seconds of play resuming he hit a screamer of a shot into the oppositions net leaving their goalkeeper with no chance. The returning globetrotter Luke Carey who lined out at cornerback was next up to raise a white flag which was followed by an extremely rare right handed strike from the camán of William Condon. Half time substitute Eoin Carey made his presence known immediately by adding two well taken points to the scoresheet and along with further points from Noely and Liam Óg, Kilworth looked solid after 40 minutes played holding a comfortable eleven point lead.

Kildorrery to their credit however had other ideas and even after being reduced to fourteen men, over the next 11 minutes they hit a remarkable 1-05 on the trot without reply shortening Kilworth’s lead to a mere green flag score. The final 10 minutes made for great viewing with both sets of supporters getting real value for their attendance as both sides procured three points apiece making it anyone’s game to win, but ultimately victory went Kilworth’s direction upon referee Pa O’Driscoll’s final whistle of the evening. Full time score: Kilworth 2-18, Kildorrery 1-18.

Team & Scorers: Sean Keane, Sean Shanahan, Kieran Lane, Luke Carey 0-01, Sean Óg Kenneally 0-02, David Twomey 0-01, Michael Gowen, Jeremy Saich, Daniel O’Regan, Leo Coffey, William Condon 0-02, Brian Sheehan, Liam Óg Hegarty 1-03 (2-f), Noel McNamara 1-03 (1-f), Cormac Donnellan 0-02. Substitutes used: Eoin Carey 0-04, & Jamie Sheehan.

U11 HURLING

The U11s had a busy few days last week playing 2 games, both in hurling. First up they travelled to Castletownroche on Tuesday evening to take on a very strong Ballycastle Gaels outfit in a challenge game. The boys were up against it but showed great determination against a very well coached home side.

On Saturday morning it was back to Go Games fixtures when they made the trip to Youghal to take on the locals. We had 2 teams and played 5 very competitive games over the course of the hour. Thanks to Ballycastle Gaels and Youghal for hosting us.

Well done to Noah Dunne who pulled off some outstanding saves in goals on Saturday and to Luke Kenneally who had a great battle with the Youghal full forward throughout.

This week we return to football and we’re back on the road as we travel to Aghavine on Thursday to take on Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge outfit Fr. O Neills.

Pictured are the U11 hurlers who played Youghal on Saturday morning last.

U12 HURLING

A showery Thursday evening saw Erins Own visit Araglen to take on Kilworth Araglen Óg in an U12 hurling challenge match. This comes off the back of an extremely tough round of grading games for the lads. The first half got off to a flying start with several points from play scored. The skills practiced at training were on show and we were winning plenty of 50/50 ball. The second half was excellent, and some fantastic individual displays were also produced by the lads. Plenty of teamwork and good passing led to a win for Kilworth Araglen Óg on the night. Well done lads. A huge thanks to Erins Own led by John Fenton (Ballinvoher) for travelling down. They are a fantastic side. Onwards now for the boys into the second phase of this year’s league having been graded and matched with similar teams. We are looking forward to some great matches.

U11 HURLING

Last week, the U11s found themselves with some free time due to the cancellation of their scheduled game against Passage. Fortunately, Kiltha Óg came to our aid and invited us to join them in Dungourney for their games against Aghada on Saturday morning. Each of the three clubs brought two teams, resulting in a total of four games per team. Kiltha Óg’s organization was impressive, ensuring that the games ran smoothly.

Our boys maintained their recent strong form against tough opponents, showcasing an excellent style of hurling with great effort. We’ve faced both Aghada and Kiltha Óg several times now, and given how closely matched we are, it’s likely we’ll continue to compete in similar divisions as the boys advance into graded competition.

A special shoutout goes to Roman for playing his first competitive game with the club, and to twins James and Bobby Hegarty—James scored two goals while Bobby made a spectacular point from distance. We extend our gratitude to Shane and the Kiltha Óg coaches for inviting us down.

U14 HURLING

Last Friday night we travelled to play Na Piarsiagh in Cork City to keep our championship hopes alive.

On a pleasant, but windy evening, we took to the field determined to improve on our previous performance, and roared on by our passionate supporters, we delivered in spades.

Playing against the strong wind in the first half, we went in at half time with only Jason’s goal separating the teams.

With the wind at our backs in the second half, we ran out deserving winners. We look forward to our next outing with this performance under our belts and with some players shining in new positions, most notably Dylan at half back, and our U13 players contributing well again. Tadgh with 13 points continues to lead the forward line, and most encouragingly we are increasing our scorers.

REBEL ÓG NORTH

Continued success to Darragh, JJ, Tadgh and Micheál, who contributed greatly to the Rebel Óg North development team with two victories over Tipperary development teams in Ballyhooly last Saturday.

POINTS SHARED AT MINANE BRIDGE

Last Saturday evening, May 17th, our Premier Intermediate hurlers were once again back in action as they travelled south to Minane Bridge to contest Tracton in the sixth round clash of the Red FM sponsored Division 4 Hurling League. The current Cork Junior A hurling champions were first to hit the score board in this closely fought contest and were two points better before Noel McNamara opened Kilworth scoring through a placed ball strike after 5 minutes played. Kilworth then excelled over the next 9 minutes with midfielder Eoin Carey bagging two long range points before another strike from Noely rattled the Tracton net putting Kilworth two points in front after 14 minutes played. Tracton had their own goal chance denied by goalkeeper Killian Heggtveit who pulled off a fine save, and it was then a case of back and forth between the sides until the interval as the teams shared six white flags apiece with Brian Sheehan, Liam Whelan, and Jeremy Saich adding their initials to the Kilworth scoresheet. Half time score: Kilworth 1-09, Tracton 0-09.

Kilworth once again continued to excel after the water break and for the first time in the contest went four points clear courtesy of Jeremy Saich’s second point of the evening. The Carrigdhoun divisional side immediately responded with a point from play before a shemozzle broke out which left the green and red striped side reduced to thirteen men for the remainder of the contest. After a prolonged period of scoreless play Noely once again extended Kilworth’s advantage to four points on the three quarter mark, but Tracton to their credit battled hard and reduced the deficit back to two points with 10 minutes remaining. The sides once again shared three points apiece before centre back David Twomey’s strike gave Kilworth a three point cushion with just minutes remaining. However, the final whistle could not come soon enough for Kilworth as Tracton breached the Kilworth defense and bagged a three pointer deep into injury time to level proceedings leaving the travelling Kilworth contingent flabbergasted. Full time score: Kilworth 1-15, Tracton 1-15.

With just three league games now remaining to play, Kilworth will be eager to push on and add more points to the league table when they face Inniscarra away in the seventh round clash which currently takes place on Sunday morning June 1st at Ballyanley.

Team & Scorers: Killian Heggtveit, Sean Shanahan, Kieran Lane, Austin O’Hara, Sean Óg Kenneally, David Twomey 0-01, Michael Gowen, Eoin Carey 0-04 (0-02-f), Jeremy Saich 0-02, Leo Coffey, Liam Whelan 0-01, Brian Sheehan 0-01, Michael Sheehan 0-01, Noel McNamara 1-05 (0-02-f), William Condon.

JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE

Last week on Tuesday evening May 13th, our Junior hurlers were also back in action as they travelled the short distance to Fitzgerald Park Fermoy to contest our local neighbours in their third round fixture of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division 2 Hurling League. Kilworth, who were unfortunately missing a large number of players for this encounter due to exams and other commitments had a very tight squad of just sixteen players available and were no match for the black and amber coloured Fermoy side who were deserving winners of this contest come the final whistle. Full time score: Kilworth 0-05, Fermoy 1-20.

Up next, Kilworth welcome Araglen to the club grounds for the fourth round clash of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division 2 Hurling League which is currently fixed for next Tuesday evening May 27th.

Team: Sean Keane, Kieran Twomey, John Horgan, Kenny Murphy, Brian Whelan, Sean Óg Kenneally, Conor White, Michael O’Callaghan, Brian Dunne, Brian Casey, Sean Beecher, Jason McCarthy, Jamie Foley, Anthony Sheehan, Michael Linehan. Substitute used: John Tobin Allen.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

Great Day Out for U11s in Douglas

The U11s made the trip up the M8 to Douglas on Saturday afternoon last for a full day’s hurling in the Sean Downey / Mick Quirke Tournament. Mick Quirke, after whom the tournament is named, was the grandfather of U14 player Michéal Quirke , and by all accounts put a huge amount of effort into the juvenile club in Douglas over many many years.

In all 32 teams took part and it is a testament to the organisation that went in before-hand that the day went off like clockwork with all games starting on time. The boys, and their supporters, were also thrilled with the refreshments offered up by the host club throughout the event.

We entered 2 teams on the day and played a total of 9 games against combinations from Monaleen (Limerick), Ballincollig, Douglas and Nemo Rangers. Despite being down a few regulars, the boys acquitted themselves well in sweltering conditions. Both teams emerged from their respective groups and came close in their subsequent knock out games. The day was a great learning experience for everyone, and all clubs were delighted for the invite.

Great Day Out for U11s in Douglas

U14 Football Championship

On Friday evening last in the fabulous sunshine, our U14 footballers commenced their Championship campaign hosting Duarigle Gaels (Millstreet/Cullen). We got off to a fantastic start, scoring freely and playing well. A goal just before half time from Fionnan Looney put the result beyond doubt, and we continued the momentum in the second half to win convincingly. The game was notable for our teams first two pointer contribution, midfielder Michéal Quirke with a terrific effort on the run from over 40 yards. Our defenders also performed admirably, none more so than Nathan Webb at corner back. Next up is an away fixture in Round 2 to neighbours St Dominics.

Kilworth U8 Football

Our U8’s had their first blitz of the year in Mallow on Saturday 5th April where we had two teams entered. We played some great games against Kildorrery, Boherbue, Newmarket & Clyda Rovers. The boys showed great skill and teamwork and the future looks very bright with these boys. Well done boys!

U11s SHOW PROMISE IN WATERGRASSHILL & GLENVILLE

Over the last two weekends, our U11s made the short trip to East Cork to play against Watergrasshill and Glenville in hurling and football, respectively. Both games were played under summer conditions, with the effort from both sides matching the glorious weather.

In hurling, we played three games last Saturday week, all of which were highly competitive. The excellent work rate was evident through the level of hooking and blocking from both teams. The boys have been working very hard in training lately, and it’s really beginning to show in their matchday performances.

Last Friday evening, we switched to football, again playing three matches against the home side. The boys played well and showed improvement across the three games, with some teak-tough defending and excellent scores taken. They worked the ball effectively from defense to attack and put in a great shift against a strong Glenville side. Thanks to Tony and the Watergrasshill/Glenville mentors for facilitating both games.

Next Saturday, the boys have been invited to Douglas for what promises to be a great day of hurling. Thirty-two teams will take part on the day with representation from Cork, Limerick, and Waterford. We will enter two teams; despite being short of a few players due to first holy communion and other events, the boys are eagerly looking forward to this outing.
