THROWBACK THURSDAY

Thirty three years ago this week at Fitzgerald Park Fermoy, Kilworth contested local rivals Fermoy in the 1992 North Cork Junior A Hurling League Final. Ending in a draw with the sides scoring 3-9 apiece, the teams had to wait a further five months to contest the replay, when on Friday May 7th, 1993, Kilworth, with a slightly different starting fifteen, finally came up triumphs at Moorepark on a final scoreline of 1-8 to 1-7. Described as a “Thriller of a Game” the following match report details the initial encounter between the neighbouring sides.

“The North Cork Junior A hurling league final played in ideal conditions in Fermoy last Sunday turned out to be a thriller. Pat Greehy and Aidan Kenny, who were playing at full and corner forward positions respectively, each had narrow wides before Fermoy had two wides inside a minute. After nine minutes Sean Carey hit the side net before Kenny opened Kilworth scoring when he pointed a free with thirteen minutes on the clock. Shortly after, Pat Greehy connected with a dropping Kenny free to rattle the net from close range. Three further placed ball points from Kenny were cancelled out by Fermoy to leave the half time score reading, Kilworth 1-4, Fermoy 0-5.

The first five minutes of the second half saw a goalscoring blitz occur when following another Kenny point, Sean Carey put Kilworth six in front as he flicked the sliotar into the Fermoy net after a pass from his brother Brian. Fermoy however responded with two quick goals, but these were sandwiched by another Aidan Kenny pointed free to leave Kilworth leading by the minimum after thirty-five minutes played. Fermoy quickly got back on level terms and went three points in front as they goaled following slick marking from the Kilworth defence. Pat Greehy then collected a great pass from Michael Gowen to score his second goal on the contest leaving the sides deadlocked with fifteen minutes remaining. Brian Carey pointed next to restore Kilworth lead but Fermoy quickly added two placed ball points to briefly regain the advantage until Kenny pointed to leave the sides all square with just three minutes remaining. Fermoy pointed a minute later, and it looked all over but once again Kenny saved Kilworth’s bacon when he pointed a free from virtually the last puck of the game leaving Kilworth to fight another day. Full time score, Kilworth 3-9, Fermoy 3-9. Con O’Sullivan (Clyda Rovers) oversaw the fixture).”

Kilworth GAA Notes 04 December 2025

WELL ATTENDED AGM

This year’s club AGM took place last Friday evening, November 28th in front of a large attendance which was fantastic to see, at the meeting room of the new dressing room complex which was kindly opened for the evening by builders KDC, with a number of apologies also received. Upon arrival members received the nights agenda which was printed in both the Irish & English language along with a very detailed Treasurers report. The Clár of the Crinniú Ginearálta Bhliantúil included: Minutes of the 2024 AGM, Secretary’s report, Treasurer’s report, Chairperson’s address, Irish & Cultural Officer’s address, Election of Officers and Members of the Executive Committee, Notice of Motions, and Any Other Business.

The tone of the evening was set from the outset with club Chairperson John Heggtveit opening proceedings by thanking everyone for attending which was followed by a prayer and minutes silence to reflect on all those who sadly went to their eternal rest over the past year.

Next up club Secretary Michelle O’Keeffe read the minutes from the 2024 AGM which was held in the Kilworth Community Hall, and this was proposed and adopted.

Every aspect of the club was covered, and immense credit is due to Michelle for compiling this absolutely fantastic report and for all her work as club secretary over the past year. The Cisteoir then thanked all those within the community who helped in any way with the fundraising efforts throughout the year which included sponsorship, weekly club lotto, rebels bounty draw, golf classic, strong foundations campaign, and the community festival to name a few. The treasurer’s report was then proposed and adopted.

Outgoing Chairperson John Heggtveit then gave a synopsis of the clubs activities over the past year and reiterated on the vast items spoken by both the Rúnaí and Cisteoir. The Cathaoirleach then thanked our very generous club sponsors, the top table along with all the club executive members, and all the various club committees for all their hard work that they did throughout the year stating that their effort and hard work does not go unnoticed. John’s final address before he stepped down as Chairperson included how it was a privilege and honour to oversee the club for the past 4 years to which he received a deserving round of applause.

John’s leadership, steady guidance, and commitment during his tenure has strengthened the club at every level with his passion and hard work leaving a lasting legacy. John will always be remembered as steering the club through the biggest development it has ever undertaken and all within Kilworth GAA club express our sincere thanks to John for his outstanding and devoted service to the club. GAEILGE SA CHLUB – CLG CHILL UIRD

I mbliana, rinneamar go leor chun an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn i gCill Uird. An príomhghnó a sheasann amach ná an iarracht ar leith a rinneamar leis na comharthaí don chlubtheach nua. Is céim thábhachtach chun cinn don teanga sa cheantar í seo, agus ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas ó chroí a ghabháil leis an gcumann agus leis an gclub as an tacaíocht leanúnach a thugann sibh chun an Ghaeilge a neartú sa chlub agus sa phobal. Focal ar leith buíochais go hAléin Ó Cionnaithe a chinntigh ár dhílseacht lenár dteanga i dTógáil an chlubthí. Buíochas ach go háirithe le Seán Ó Maignéar as ucht a chuid oibre ar na meáin shóisialta agus as an gcur chun cinn atá á dhéanamh aige don teanga. Is mór againn an tiomantas sin. Tá sé soiléir go bhfuil tionchar dearfach ag tarlúint maidir leis an gcultúr le blianta  beaga anuas. Feictear an tionchar seo go rialta ag traenálacha na mbuachaillí agus na gcailíní, nuair a chuireann na traenálaithe cúpla focal Gaeilge isteach, agus nuair a úsáidtear an teanga go neamhfhoirmiúil, gan bhrú, i measc na ndaoine fásta sa chlub. Tada a chosnaíonn sé iarracht a dhéanamh chun ár dteanga a chur chun cinn agus a chaomhnú sa cheantair. Tá sé i gceist againn ranganna agus ciorcail chomhrá a chur ar fáil sa chlubtheach nua, agus tá sceitimíní orainn an Ghaeilge agus an cultúr a thabhairt chun tosaigh arís.

This year we have achieved a great deal in promoting Irish and culture in Kilworth GAA. The most significant step, perhaps, was our special effort to provide signage for the new clubhouse. This is real progress for the language in our community, and I want to sincerely thank the committee and the club for their support in advancing Irish both within the club and in the wider area. A special thanks to Alan Kenny who was key in ensuring that the clubhouse would reflect our commitment to our native tongue. A particular word of thanks to Seán Magner for his work on social media and for the promotion of the language he continues to drive. We greatly appreciate it. It is clear that a positive influence has been building over the years. We see this influence regularly at training sessions with the boys and girls, when coaches drop in a few words of Irish, and when informal Irish is used naturally among adults in the club. It costs nothing to make the effort to promote and maintain our language within the community. In 2026 we intend to provide classes and conversation circles in the new clubhouse, and we are excited to bring Irish and our culture further to the fore. We also aim to hold local Scór events  & engage our club in this very valuable competition around language, music and arts. Another goal will be to achieve and maintain our Silver Medal for our club house which will take a little effort from a lot of people so please stay in tune with cultural activities that will be advertised for the coming year.

The ‘h’ in CLG Chill Uird

To finish, regarding the “h” in the name CLG Chill Uird, and to make effective reference to it in English, highlighting the significance it carries. The little “h” in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Chill Uird is far more than a quirk of spelling. It is the mark of ownership in our native tongue – grammatically the genitive case tells us this is Kilworth’s Club, belonging to the people and the community it serves. Just as in Irish expresses Mossy’s hurley as camán Mhuiris or Patsy’s pint as pionta Phaitsí, so too does it express that this club is of Kilworth, rooted in her soil and her spirit. To those unfamiliar with the language, it may look unusual, even mistaken. But in truth, it is a proud signal of identity and belonging. It reminds us that our club is not simply a building or a team, but a living part of the community, carried in the hearts of its people. And there is a deeper story here. The reason we have this language today – and the reason our games thrive alongside it – is because of the Gaelic Revival. That movement sought to restore not only Irish words, but Irish ways: our culture, our games, our music, our arts, and our literature. Language was central to that mission, as were the fields where hurling and football were reborn. Even in everyday terms, the language reminds us of community ownership. For example, Ionad Gleacaíochta an Phobail means “Community Gym” – a place that belongs to the community. In the same way, CLG Chill Uird tells us this club belongs to Kilworth, and Kilworth belongs to the living tradition of our language, our games, our music, our arts, and our literature.

Míle buíochas, go n-éirí libh – Cill Uird abú! – Mr. Joe Aherne

THROWBACK THURSDAY

This throwback yet again rewinds the clock back 40 years to 1985 as the Kilworth Minor Hurlers, trading under the St. Martin’s umbrella and overseen by the sole care of Mossy McNamara, jubilantly won the North Cork Minor B Hurling Championship. After travelling outside the county bounds to Lismore to contest the locals (St. Carthage’s) in a challenge game in preparation for their forthcoming blue ribbon campaign, “Mossy’s Marvel’s” first championship outing was a trip to Shanballymore on Friday April 19th where they easily overcame the challenge of Old Walls who were from the parish of Liscarroll. The game which was played in very blustery conditions saw Kilworth who were playing with a strong wind advantage in the opening half dominate proceedings throughout to lead comfortably by 2-6 to no score after twenty minutes played before coming out on top at the final whistle on a scoreline of 4-9 to 0-2.

Following this impressive first round victory, a long three month wait occurred before the quarter-final fixture against Kilbolane (Milford) was played on Saturday July 13th at Fr. Con Buckley Park Buttevant. Once again played under adverse weather conditions, Kilworth ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-14 to 1-2. Match reports state that Kilworth attacked from the throw in and it was not long before the scribes piled up, which included scores from Frank Hanrahan, Liam Magnier and Pa Murphy followed by an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 30 yards by Colm Carey to leave Kilworth coasting 2-8 to 1-1 at the interval. Milford tried in earnest upon the restart but stout defending from Oliver Sheehan, Pat Gallagher, Mike Dunne, and Michael O’Brien kept the threat at bay. Pa Murphy struck two more goals to achieve his hattrick and whilst all fifteen players played their heart out, Frank Hanrahan who was only 15 years of age displayed skill and accuracy far beyond his years, but essentially all players were well deserving of their accolades.

Following on from this tremendous victory a semi-final encounter against St. Mollaggas (Kildorrery) was now on the cards, and at the local cheesemakers Mitchelstown venue on Wednesday August 21st (at 8pm to be precise) Kilworth, following a gutsy and determined display, after a pulsating hours hurling emerged victors on a final scoreline of 3-9 to 2-7. Playing with the aid of a fresh breeze, Kilworth took time to settle with the forwards finding scores hard to come by, until James Lyng who had one of his best games in a Kilworth jersey lashed home the sides first three pointer before three points quickly followed to leave the half time scoreline reading 1-3 to 0-4. Whilst they were sluggish in the opening half these young lads opened in style upon the restart with goals secured from Sean Carey and Pa Murphy followed by a flurry of points from the Carey brothers Colm and Sean, Frank Hanrahan, and Michael O’Brien to ensure the spoils went Kilworth’s way.

Four weeks later, on Saturday September 21st at Ballygiblin, St. Patrick’s (Fermoy), albeit their second string, were the final obstacle left standing in Kilworth’s way of reaping the rich fruits of success. Such was the excellence of all players in this finale that the pencil makers got no chance to settle and once Colm Carey opened the account with a fine goal from a ground shot, the black and amber coloured side were always fighting an uphill battle. Michael O’Brien and Liam Magnier ensured a plentiful supply of ball went the direction of the attack and when James Lyng secured Kilworth’s second goal Fermoy were showing signs of throwing in the towel, however they did succeed in holding the lads scoreless for a long period, but with five minutes of play remaining before the interval, PJ Kenny hit the net to leave the half time score at 3 goals to nil.

For the opening ten minutes of the second half Fermoy assumed the initiative but were repelled time after time by the super alert Kilworth defence which consisted of the Sheehan twins, Oliver and Gerard, John Kiersey, Michael Dunne, Pat Gallagher and Sean Hyland. Points from Colm Carey and Frank Hanrahan eased the pressure and when second half substitute Sean Geaney added the sides fourth goal on the three quarter mark the title was homeward bound. Fermoy registered their first score after 50 minutes played but this only stung Kilworth back into retaliation mode and with more points added to the board from the consist striking duo of Colm and Frank before the final whistle sounded, Kilworth emerged worthy winners on a final scoreline of 4-7 to 0-1 bringing the curtain down on a famous victory.

Much credit for this success must be given to Mossy McNamara who was the sole trainer/selector throughout the season for these young men and without his guidance and wisdom this victory would certainly not have been possible!

U21 HURLERS DEFEATED

Last Saturday evening, September 27th, our U21 hurlers made the short commute to Ballyhooly to contest Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in the Quarter-Final of the Country Clean Recycling U21 B Hurling Championship. In a content which the western divisional side led from the start, two early goals conceded by Kilworth were regrettably imperative to the Gaels overall success in this fast paced encounter. Kilworth, who unfortunately had some notable key absentees from the squad through injury battled extremely hard throughout the hour and whilst they were solid displays of hurling by numerous individuals they were unable to keep up with the green, white, & gold coloured side as they emerged victors on a 4 point margin which brought the curtain down on the 2025 playing season for the club. Full time score: Kilworth 0-15, Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels 2-13.

Team & Scorers: Denis Riordan, Sean Moriarty, Gearoid Carey, Sean Murphy, Brian Dunne 0-01, Sean Óg Kenneally, Ronan Fenton, Michael Lenihan, Darragh Sheehan, Darragh Gill, Sean O’Flynn 0-02, Ben Carey, Aaron Browne 0-01, Liam Óg Hegarty 0-11 (0-06-f, 1-65”), & Patrick Kenny. Substitutes: Sean Flynn, Cian O’Regan, & Sam Beecher.

1980 & 1985 REUNION

Tomorrow night, Friday October 3rd, a get together is being held at the Village Inn Kilworth, to celebrate both the historic 1980 & 1985 Kilworth hurling and football teams. Briefly recapping these momentous events, the hurlers of 1980 reclaimed the North Cork Junior A championship title after a nine year lapse beating Castletownroche (who were going for three titles in a row) before going on to contest the county final against Newcestown but unfortunately came up three points short in a thrilling encounter at Páirc Úi Chaoimh, whilst the footballers of 1985 celebrate their 40 year anniversary of claiming the North Cork Junior B league and championship double against Fermoy and Liscarroll respectively. Also runners-up in the county final to Duhallow’s Kilbrin, this Kilworth array of players contested seventeen football games in all throughout the season with their only defeat coming in the county final at Mallow which is a tremendous achievement in itself. Please spread the word to everyone of this upcoming event!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

This throwback rewinds the clock back 40 years to 1985 as the Kilworth Junior B footballers hit the big time and reached the County Junior B football championship final for the very first time. Kilworth competed strongly in both codes throughout the season, however, following a 3 point defeat in the replayed North Cork Junior A hurling final to Clyda Rovers on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-6, which coincidently was the Mourneabbey clubs first ever North Cork hurling success, all efforts were made to make amends in the Junior B football decider against Liscarroll which Kilworth had also qualified for.

On the road to the North Cork (number one) football championship final Kilworth overcame the challenges of Two Pot House (Hazlewood) 1-8 to 0-5 in the 1st round on Sunday May 26th at Shanballymore followed by Abbey Rovers (Castletownroche) 1-11 to 0-9 in the semi-final on Saturday July 27th at Kildorrery. Liscarroll provided the opposition for the North Cork final which was played at Killavullen on September 25th with Kilworth coming out on top following a very testing hour on a final scoreline of 1-8 to 0-6 giving the “Brennan from the Moore” side their 4th North Cork victory at this grade.

Reports from the game state that whilst the Kilworth defence was under constant pressure they never once fumbled with goal-line clearances and last ditch tackles the order of the day. Goalkeeper John Joe Shanahan (R.I.P.) brilliantly stopped a first half penalty and after playing against the wind the half time scoreline read just two points apiece with Jim McCarthy and Pat Greehy on the dispensing end for the red and white coloured side. Kilworth however excelled upon the restart through a Kevin McCarthy point which was soon followed by an inspiring goal from Pat Greehy after a probing ball sent in from midfielder Jim McCarthy was flicked on by John Kenny to Greehy who had plenty time and space to kick the ball into the back of the Liscarroll net. Gerard Carey (R.I.P.) immediately added another point which sent Kilworth five points clear before Liscarroll clawed it back to three, but with further kicks from Jim McCarthy, Pat Greehy, Ger Carey and Ger Griffin (commonly known as the famous “Two-Four” since the 1981 victory over Ballyhooly) all sailing between the uprights before the full time whistle sounded, Kilworth ended the game worthy winners having not conceded any goal in the year’s North Cork championship. After the match jubilant Kilworth Captain and sharpshooter Ger Griffin received the trophy on behalf of his teammates with rumours of the celebrations extending into the early hours of Monday morning at a certain midfielders local establishment!

Having annexed North Cork, Kilworth received a bye in the 1st round of the county series and faced Shanagarry club, Russell Rovers, in the county semi-final which was played as part of a double header at Castlelyons on Sunday October 6th. The East Cork standard-bearers got a second bite at the cherry in this first class encounter as they scored a very late point to force a draw and send the game to a replay, however Kilworth didn’t leave this effect their appetite for success as they came out on top by 2 points in the replay seven days later which was again played at Castlelyons.

After two titanic struggles against their Imokilly counterparts, Kilworth made history by gaining their place in a football County Final of any grade since the formation of the club in 1928 with Duhallow’s Kilbrin providing the opposition in the finale. These two clubs who were better known for their hurling prowess both fancied their chances, but most divisional Gaels felt Kilworth who were remarkably unbeaten in all their big ball outings this season had the upper hand. Contested at Bishop Casey Memorial Park Mallow, Kilbrin (which is also the birthplace of Archbishop Dr. Croke), unfortunately came out on top in this decider by the narrowest of margins ending the fairytale year for this vibrant Kilworth contingent of players.

However, Kilworth’s season was still not over as there was the matter of the divisional league final up for grabs, and on Sunday December 29th Kilworth contested local neighbours Fermoy in a keenly contested decider coming out on top 1 point winners on a final scoreline of 1-7 to 2-3 at a well-kept Ballygiblin venue. This contest was much more than to decide the destination of the league title as it was also the meeting of the number one and two championship winners, and the difference between the sides at the end was Kilworth’s ability to attack and make much better use of the opportunities that came their way.

Leading by 3 points with time almost up Fermoy were awarded a controversial penalty which they duly converted to level proceedings. From the resulting kickout the ball broke to Jim McCarthy who solod a whopping 60 yards up-field before passing to Pat Greehy who was subsequently fouled leaving the pressure of a match winning free on the young shoulders of John Gallagher who was told he had to score direct. Displaying his maturity John cooly tapped the ball over the bar to bring the curtain down on a famous victory leaving Kilworth the undisputed 1985 North Cork Junior B League and Championship winners. Enroute to the league final Kilworth overcome Mallow in their semi-final encounter, after topping their group with victories over every team along the way which included Araglen, Ballyhooly, Mitchelstown, Glanworth, Grange, Fermoy, Killavullen, Kildorrery, and Doneraile.

Overall this array of players who were overseen on the sidelines by Mick Twomey, Paddy Whelan, & Lar Sheehan (R.I.P.) who was a club Vice President and also included club officers namely secretary and wing back Tom Twomey, PRO and corner forward Pat Greehy, & registrar/insurance officer and corner back Mossy McNamara, contested seventeen football games in all throughout the season with their only defeat coming in the county final at Mallow which was a tremendous achievement in itself. It must also be noted that this Kilworth team had plenty of youth on their side throughout the season which included many U21 players who had also qualified for their respective North Cork final but unfortunately went under to Milford on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-4. Coincidentally at this level, local Kilworth businessman Peter McCarthy (R.I.P.) (who was an ex-Milford man) had recently donated a new trophy to the North Cork board for this competition and as luck would have it, he was obliged to present the North Cork U21 Cup to the Milford winning Captain!

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U11 Hurling

The U11 hurlers made the short journey to Fermoy on Saturday morning to take part in the annual Tom Grumbridge Memorial Tournament. We took on a strong Fermoy side in our opening game and played very well in the first half to go in on level terms. After the break however Fermoy got the upper hand to run out deserving winners.

Our second game was against St. Dominics. Another very close first half saw the lead change hands on several occasions with St. Dominics leading by a goal at the half time whistle. The play was very even again after the break with the sides still on level terms entering the final 5 minutes. Unfortunately, a disallowed goal for our side was followed by 3 St. Dominics points to see them take the win.

The format of the competition saw all sides qualify for a final with our boys facing up against Kiltha Óg in the Div.3 decider. We played our best hurling of the morning in this game. Noah was excellent in goals, and our backs were very solid. We managed to get on top at midfield, and our forwards took their opportunities when they arrived which saw us over the line. After the game captain Luke McCrea, who led by example all morning, accepted the shield on behalf of his teammates. Thanks again to Fermoy for the invite to what was a great morning’s hurling.

Next up for the U11’s is a home football tie against Youghal this coming Sunday morning.

Pictured is Captain Luke McCrea receiving the Div.3 Shield after the U11 Hurling win in Fermoy last Saturday morning.

KILWORTH JUVENILE GAA CLUB NOTES

U11s Enjoy trip to Ballyhass

The U11s are into the last 4 weeks of a season that started out in mid-February. They have met over 70 times as a group this year including playing 25 games and it has to be said that their attendance and dedication have been fantastic. They love their hurling, football (and handball) and are a great bunch to deal with.

On Saturday last they took a well-deserved break from the playing fields as they made the trip across the division to Ballyhass near Mallow. Zip lining, crate stacking and pizza followed before the highlight of the aqua park to round off a great day out for the entire group. Sincere thanks to Joe & Trish Bonnar and Mark Hickey who along with the clubs covered the cost of the day. Thanks also to the coaches who provided transport to and from Ballyhass.

On field activities have also continued over the last number of weeks, across both codes, with excellent games against Killeagh and Fr O’ Neills in hurling, and Killavullen and Fermoy in football. The boys have been improving steadily all year and continue to show a willingness to learn and a great work ethic in training and games. On Sunday next, Fermoy have very kindly invited us to take part in the annual Tom Grumbridge U11 Hurling Memorial Tournament. This has proved to be a very well-run event over the last few of years and the boys are really looking forward to taking part.

Finally, best wishes to Odhran O Donoghue who suffered an injury in training on Thursday evening last. Odhran is a fine young player, and his tigerish attitude will be missed whilst he’s recovering for the next few weeks. Get well soon Odhran.

UPCOMING JUVENILE FIXTURE
