Then on Tuesday evening attention turns to the the junior footballers as they look to make it three wins from three when they face Abbey Rovers in this rescheduled fixture of the Avondhu division 3 football league in Castletownroche which is fixed at 7pm. Two days later, on Thursday evening, its the turn of the junior hurlers as they return to the field of play to face Shanballymore in their second round fixture which has a later throw in of 8.15pm.

Kilworth GAA Club Notes 19 March 2026

WINNING START FOR INTERMEDIATE HURLERS
Kilworth intermediate hurlers were conquerors in their opening fixture of the Red FM Division 4 Hurling League against Blackrock which was played at Church Road last week on Tuesday evening March 10th. In a very evenly contested opening 30 minutes which saw both sides share the spoils throughout, Kilworth with very little hurling under their belt owing to the recent weather conditions, maintained a good account of themselves to leave just two points separating the sides upon Brian Dillons referee David Daly’s interval whistle. Half time score: Kilworth 0-08, Blackrock 0-10.
Kilworth excelled upon the restart registering some excellent scores from both play and placed balls, but it was an Eoin Carey goal midway through the second half that set the foundation for this well deserving four point victory. The Rockies goalkeeper must be credited for pulling off some great saves on the night, but it was a combination of great team discipline together with the contribution from the Kilworth bench that were key to this successful outing to the city suburb. Full time score: Kilworth 1-21, Blackrock 0-20.
Team and scorers: Killian Heggtveitt, Gearoid Carey, Kieran Lane, Austin O’Hara, Sean Óg Kenneally, David Twomey, Michael Gowen, Leo Coffey, Jeremy Saich, Liam Óg Hegarty 0-08, (5-f, 2-65”), Eoin Carey 1-08, Michael Sheehan, Noel McNamara, Jamie Sheehan 0-02, & Darragh Sheehan. Substitutes used: Brian Sheehan, Liam Whelan 0-01, Ryan Jordan 0-02, & Luke Carey.

TWO FROM TWO FOR JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS
Kilworth junior footballers continued their winning ways last Sunday morning as they were once again victors in their second round game of the Avondhu division 3 football league against Ballyclough. A dominant first half display of football by Kilworth set the tone for this 13 a side encounter and at the half time whistle the scoreline was 12 points in Kilworth’s favor (3-07 to 0-04) with the goals coming from the boots of Leo Coffey, Liam Óg Hegarty, and Ryan Jordan. With the hard work done against the wind in the opening half, Kilworth stayed in front of their western divisional opponents to win convincingly on a final scoreline of 3-10 to 1-06.
Team and scorers: Killian Heggtveitt, Gearoid Carey, Kieran Lane, Michael Gowen, David Twomey 0-01, Brian Dunne, Leo Coffey 1-03, Ryan Jordan 1-00, Michael Sheehan, Eoin Carey 0-03, Liam Óg Hegarty 1-00, Aaron Browne 0-02, & Brian Sheehan. Substitutes used: Kieran Twomey, Michael Lenihan, Pierce Riordan, Denis Riordan, Sean Murphy, Darragh Sheehan, Ben Carey 0-01, & Brian Condon.

THROWBACK THURSDAY
1968 – Life at Intermediate level
Having conquered the 1967 North Cork Junior A Hurling Championship against Freemount (4-16 to 1-8) and the County throne against Cloughduv (3-11 to 2-7), Kilworth, for the first ever time, joined fellow divisional teams Mallow, Rathluírc, and Castletownroche as they gained promotion to Intermediate ranks for the 1968 campaign. Having been drawn against Nemo Rangers in their championship first round fixture, Kilworth naturally went into this game as underdogs when they faced the city Southsiders at Clonmult Memorial Park, Midleton on Sunday April 14th. Allied by stylish hurling and grand teamwork, this Kilworth team had tremendous spirit which was obvious at several times the previous season and also during their recent series of matches in the Intermediate league. Kilworth’s defence featuring club stalwarts Lar Flynn, John Carey, and 1967 Cork Senior player John Hogan is a clever, tenacious unit, and combined with the strong midfield pairing of Danny Fenton and Tom O’Halloran, accurate forwards Pat Farren, Patsy O’Mahony, and Bob Honahan from Mitchelstown who joined the team this year, alongside current inter-county intermediate players Kieran Casey, Seanie Long and Fred Sheedy, Kilworth supporters had every believe they would emerge victorious following their journey to the East Cork Venue. The following match report summed up the game from the Magpies home ground.
“Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half Kilworth had to fall back in the early stages when Nemo opened the scoring with a goal before shortly adding a second. In the 15th minute Kilworth opened their tally with a point and had two more before Nemo had their third score, and to the short whistle Nemo had the better of matters to lead at half time by 3-1 to 1-3. With the wind favouring Kilworth in the second half the scoring was level after 5 minutes and then when Kilworth got in front they maintained the pressure and although a few short lived attacks came for Nemo in the closing stages, Kilworth appeared to have the measure of their opponents and finished deserving winners. Full time score, Kilworth 3-9, Nemo Rangers 3-2. Kilworth scorers: Patsy O’Mahoney 3-1, Fred Sheedy and Bob Honahan 0-3 each, Danny Fenton and Dinny Condon 0-1 each.”
Having eliminated Nemo Rangers from the championship Kilworth’s next assignment was a mouthwatering quarter final clash against Glen Rovers second string. Played in Riverstick at 8pm on Sunday evening Sunday July 7th Kilworth produced a late rally to draw level only to go under in added time as the Glen converted a late placed ball effort. The following match report summed up what was rated as one of the best hurling exhibitions seen in the Cork intermediate club championship for many a long day.
“Glen Rovers qualified for the semi-final of the Cork Co. Intermediate Hurling Championship when they defeated Kilworth at Riverstown. Kilworth, last year’s county junior champions led for most of the first half, but Glen Rovers goaled shortly before half time to lead by a point at the interval. There was little between the sides in the second half, but the Glen led by two goals with only 5 minutes remaining. However, a Kilworth rally brought them level almost on time and the match winning score was a point from a seventy, scored by the Glen’s Sean O’Riordan. The game produced plenty of good hurling passages and the standard of hurling generally was very high. One of the stars of the hour was Kilworth’s forward Fred Sheedy who had an outstanding game on Cork’s centre half back Denis O’Riordan. Full time score, Kilworth 3-8, Glen Rovers 2-12. Kilworth scorers: Fred Sheedy 1-3, Danny Fenton 1-1, Dave O’Riordan 0-4, and Dinny Condon 1-0.”
Interestingly, this defeat would become even harder to swallow for Kilworth Gaels as the following month Glen Rovers withdrew from all adult level county championships in protest of the suspension of three of their senior players and another member who was expelled from membership of the GAA for life which resulted from incidents during the Glen Rovers V UCC senior hurling championship quarter final clash the previous month.

THROWBACK THURSDAY
1962 – The quest to regain the crown
Following on from the clubs first ever Junior A hurling honours in 1961 against Kildorrery on a final scoreline of 4-09 to 2-07, Kilworth entered the 1962 season confident with many hurling Gaels within the county’s largest division Avondhu expecting the titleholders to perform a repeat success of the previous season. 1962 was also the year that the existence of the area system of deciding divisional finalists was removed, meaning Kilworth faced western divisional charges earlier in the championship for the very first time.
Following a first round defeat of Dromina after a rather poor performance that saw Kilworth prevail by a 4 point margin which was played at Doneraile on Sunday 1st July, a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against challengers Newtownshandrum awaited the local Gaels at Buttevant which interestingly was Kilworth’s first ever junior championship appearance at this very popular venue. Watched by a record breaking crowd on Sunday 15th July with gates receipts bringing in a divisional record of £155, Kilworth with Jerry Keating, Bill Hegarty, Mick Connors, Owen McCauliffe, and Tom Aherne all representing the Avondhu Senior hurlers, forced the pace throughout this contest and were never in arrears as they produced an hour of combined and devasting hurling to run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 5-13 to 4-0.
Next up for Kilworth on Sunday evening 12th August was a semi-final clash against near neighbours Araglen which was played at Fitzgerald Park Fermoy. This encounter however was overshadowed by the tragic death of a Kilworth Gael, Mr. Jeremiah Brackett, who was involved in a traffic accident on his way to the game which cast a gloom over the bumper crowd in attendance. Nevertheless, this clash which was played in a fine sporting spirit and a credit to both teams, proved fast, hard hurling, and was so thrilling from the first to final whistle that not even a single spectator left the field as they witnessed Kilworth march onwards to the North Cork final once again with the final score reading 2-05 to 0-04.
Kilworth, the glamour team of last year’s championship, included the presence of two county intermediate players consisting of midfielder Bill Hegarty and substitute Jerry Keating, and also county minor corner forward John Hogan within their starting fifteen, just like 12 months prior, once again faced rivals Kildorrery in the divisional final. Played at a gale swept but dry Doneraile pitch in the presence of a large crowd on Sunday 26th August, Kildorrery got the start of dreams and unfortunately Kilworth’s all or nothing tactics failed to swing in motion for this encounter as they were compelled to bend the knee to the boys from the hill on a final scoreline of 6-7 to 7-1. The following extracts from match reports summed up the 13 goal spectacle:
“Kildorrery will carry the North Cork standard in the county J.H.C. this year following a most exciting decider at Doneraile last Sunday with the losers going down gamely and as proper sportsmen. The game was not up to the standard expected but at the same time some good bouts of hurling were witnessed at intervals. Favoured by a pretty severe wind in the first half, Kildorrery made good use of it and succeeded in piling up the score with 6 goals and 7 points to a solidary Kilworth point from the stick of John Hogan the half time score.
Upon the restart, in a desperate race against time and a hugh deficit to reclaim, the men from the southern banks of the funcheon remarkably almost forced a replay. Courage and a “do or die” spirit of hurling were mainsprings of this amazing fight back and a team less equipped with those great assets would have half-heartedly approached the second period. An eight goal arrears tally was a crushing thought to the 1961 champions and their many loyal and sporting supporters, but far from being despondent, the common message which was heard from the sidelines was “go for goals lads, tis your only hope”.
Six minutes after the resumption the response to this plea was made when full forward Pat Farren had the uprights shaking following a first time connection on a delivery from county intermediate player Billy Hegarty who was active in the midfield area. Within the next three minutes, John Hogan the county minor, and Fred Sheedy, Hegarty’s midfield partner, added further major scores. Still though, there were five goals to go before the current champions could even earn the right to a replay. This consideration and the great hurling of half backs Owen McCauliffe and Mick Dunne, plus the tremendous vitality and thrust of John Finn, accelerated the sustained offensive tempo, and when Avondhu senior footballer Jim Lawton availed of a defensive lapse to slam in Kilworth fourth goal the signs of a hectic finish were clearly evident.
Ritchie Carey then came into the picture notching two goals with ten minutes of the thrilling second half period left to play. Excitement reigned supreme as Kilworth demonstrated that their rallying power which characterised their 1961 county semi-final and final duals with Eire Óg and Cloyne were not freakish. A dramatic incident produced Kilworth’s last goal when the Kildorrery goalkeeper short-pucked a delivery which Ritchie Carey intercepted and smartly parted to Pat Farren who rounded off the movement with a well taken score in the 52nd minute as electrifying scenes were witnessed all over the venue.
Kilworth maintained pressure and continued to attack for the remainder of time of the clock but ultimately it would be Kildorrery’s day in the sun as their first half tally kept them in the lead by one goal at referee and divisional chairman Mr. Derry Gowen’s full time whistle. To the losers credit they went down gamely and can hold their heads high. The loss of county intermediate player Jerry Keating through injury in the first quarter was a hard blow to their hopes and when this final is reviewed by some North Cork Gaels around the fireside on a future winters night, the tremendous yet unsuccessful Kilworth rally will add lustre to both the players and club.”

Kilworth GAA Club Notes 29 January 2026

NEW ONE MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE

Kilworth GAA, Kilworth Camogie and Kilworth LGFA are proud to announce the introduction of a unified One Membership Structure, a major milestone in the continued development of our clubs and a significant step towards operating as one club with one vision.
This new structure is the result of strong collaboration between all three organisations and reflects the shared commitment to reducing costs for families, simplifying membership, and ensuring that participation in Gaelic games is accessible to all. At its core, this initiative is designed to maximise participation across every code and age group, strengthening the pathway for all players in our community.
Kilworth Camogie and Kilworth LGFA wish to acknowledge and sincerely appreciate the support of Kilworth GAA and Kilworth Juvenile GAA, who have adjusted their membership rates to make this unified structure possible. This cooperation demonstrates the strength of our clubs when we work together with a common purpose.
With the completion of the new club development and the upgrading of the pitches, the momentum across Kilworth GAA, Camogie and LGFA has never been stronger. The One Membership Structure builds on this progress and positions us for a bright and united future.
We encourage all members to get involved in the many activities now underway — from volunteering and coaching to signing up for the new gym and supporting club initiatives and fundraisers. Our success depends on the continued engagement and energy of our community. As clubs, we are stronger together, and this new structure marks an exciting new chapter for Kilworth.
