INTERMEDIATE HURLERS COME UP SHORT
Last Thursday evening August 20th, Kilworth travelled to Páirc Uí Rinn to contest Valley Rovers in their second-round fixture of the 2026 Co-Op Superstores sponsored Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. In a fiercely contested encounter that saw both sides struggle with accuracy, registering a combined total of 31 wides, Kilworth created enough opportunities to claim the spoils but ultimately came up just two points short at the final whistle.
Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half, Kilworth made the brighter start and raced into an early three-point lead within four minutes courtesy of Liam Óg Hegarty, Noel McNamara, and a well worked score following an excellent team movement by corner forward Brian Sheehan. Valley Rovers then gradually settled into the contest and began to claw their way back into contention, however further scores from Liam Óg on placed balls and another Noel McNamara effort helped Kilworth maintain a three-point advantage after sixteen minutes. However, the Innishannon side slowly started to creep back into contention and enjoyed their strongest spell before the interval by outscoring Kilworth six points to two over the next quarter and although the sides shared the spoils twice before the interval Valley Rovers got the last score on the opening half to edge ahead by a single point at the water break. Half-time score: Kilworth 0-09, Valley Rovers 0-10.
Kilworth emerged for the second half with renewed intent and immediately regained the lead through points from Jamie Sheehan and William Condon, whose superb score off his right side was one of the highlights of the evening. It took a further five minutes for Valley Rovers to respond with a score before Noel McNamara was unfortunate not to raise a green flag when his goal effort was excellently saved, before sailing over the crossbar for a point. Jamie Sheehan then added his second point of the evening to keep Kilworth in front, but the Carrigdhoun side then hit a quick purple patch and over the next two minutes drew level for the sixth time before adding three unanswered points to open up a three-point advantage by the three-quarter mark. Another Liam Óg converted free reduced the deficit but Valley Rovers immediately responded with two further scores to stretch their lead to four points with just eight minutes remaining. Kilworth refused to throw in the towel and battled back strongly in the closing stages with Liam Óg, Eoin Carey and Luke Carey all raising white flags as the sides shared five points, leaving just three points separating them as the game entering additional time. Kilworth miraculously then fashioned two late goal opportunities that could have rescued the game with the last puck coming from an Eoin Carey 21-yard free, but with a goal required, his effort unfortunately drifted over the crossbar rather than under, leaving Valley Rovers to emerge as two-point winners after a hard-fought Championship encounter. There was no winner of last week’s lotto jackpot of €4,000 held on Monday August 17th. The numbers drawn were: 03, 12, 13, & 16. The lucky dip winner of €50 was Fergus Flynn c/o Online.
