Kilworth GAA Club Notes 28 May 2026
INTERMEDIATE HURLERS MAKE IT SIX FROM SIX
As the saying goes, goals win matches, and that proved true for Kilworth’s intermediate hurlers last Saturday evening, May 23rd, when they welcomed fellow divisional side Ballyhea to Moorepark for their sixth-round clash in the Red FM sponsored Division 4 Hurling League. In a game that went right down to the wire, Kilworth secured a hard-earned victory against a determined Ballyhea side that threw everything at them in the final quarter. However, some fine solid defending led from the back by veteran Kieran Lane kept the Magpies at bay when it mattered most. Playing with the advantage of a strong breeze in the opening half, Kilworth made a bright start, with Brian Sheehan opening the scoring in what quickly developed into a fiercely contested encounter, and by the 21st minute of play, Kilworth had established a five-point lead, which was helped by a superbly taken goal from full forward Jamie Sheehan. Both sides then traded further scores from both play and placed balls as the half progressed, but Kilworth maintained their advantage to go in at the water break with a six-point lead. Half time score; Kilworth 1-11, Ballyhea 0-08.
Kilworth hit the ground running upon the restart and within six minutes they had extended their lead to ten points, thanks to another clinical goal from the ever-dangerous Jamie Sheehan. Ballyhea, however, weren’t going down without a fight and with ten minutes of play remaining had reduced Kilworth’s lead to a mere four points. However, Kilworth responded in style when substitute Olann McCarthy-O’Donoghue found the net with a beautifully struck goal which was promptly reflected on the new electronic scoreboard operated by Pa Browne almost before the green flag was raised! Ballyhea once again refused to admit defeat and immediately fired over five consecutive points to leave just two points between the sides with seconds remaining. Kilworth however had the final say, as Jamie Sheehan stepped up and split the posts five minutes into stoppage time to seal the victory for Kilworth in what was their first home game of the year. Full time score; Kilworth 3-17, Ballyhea 1-20. Referee; Pa Beausang – Midleton.

THROWBACK THURSDAY
Match Report – Rathcormac Football Tournament Final, Sunday July 14th, 1889
On Sunday the final football tie (Kilworth 1st v Rathcormac 1st) in connection with the above tournament was played off under most favorable circumstances – the turf, weather, and arrangements being A1. The match, which was of the most exciting character, was witnessed by a large assemblage of admirers, who, indeed, were well repaid by the splendid display of athletic prowess that was exhibited on both sides. From the reputation of both teams and from their appearance when lining up it was expected that the struggle for victory would be a sharp one. Mr. T Casey, hon. secretary Fermoy GAA, after much pressure, consented to act as referee and gave entire satisfaction.
Details; Kilworth won the toss and elected to play with the breeze at their backs. The leather having been thrown up play remained neutral for about five minutes when Rathcormac by a rush placed a point to their credit. This was soon non-plussed by a gallant sweep of the visitors which resulted in a goal, quickly followed by a point. Rathcormac now playing in defense had to pay the penalty of a “free” which resulted in another point. Thus, play stood until half time was called.
On changing sides, hostile play ensued when after about ten minutes Rathcormac, by a forty-yard kick, scored a point. Soon after they gained another forty-yard kick by which they strove hard to gain a goal. Kilworth, however, were equal to the occasion, and after a hard struggle Rathcormac scored a point. On kick out Rathcormac placed another point to their score, when Kilworth by a rush invaded their opponent’s ground, but nothing resulted and at the time being called play stood at Kilworth 1 goal and 2 points, Rathcormac 4 points, thus leaving the visitors the winners of a handsome set of medals.
