DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT ON COUNTY STAGE

Kilworth 2-08 Douglas 1-12

Our junior footballers suffered a heart breaking one point defeat to Douglas in the Cork County Junior A Football championship quarter final played in Mourenabbey last Saturday afternoon. In the clubs first foray at this level on the county stage, it’s a game we could and probably should have won but a converted 45-yard kick deep into stoppage time proved the winning score for the city side. We led 2-8 to 1-8 after 57 minutes but Douglas hit the last four points of a keenly contested encounter to come from behind and win it at the death. It looked as if extra time was on the cards as it seemed we had won a late free in a very kickable position but to the surprise of all in attendance including those in the Douglas camp, the referee blew the final whistle with a Kilworth player on the ground with the ball in his hands. 

In a close opening the sides were level 0-2 each at the first water break. Brian Sheehan from a free and Liam Whelan from play with our scores. On the restart Douglas added two points (1 free) to lead 0-2 to 0-4 after twenty-one minutes. Eoin Carey took a quick free to Leo Coffey who returned the ball to Eoin to kick our third point. Our first goal was to arrive a minute later, a long ball in was gathered by Noel McNamara who was fouled. Smart play from Noel saw a quick free dispatched to Brian Sheehan who made no mistake with a great finish and we led 1-3 to 0-4 after twenty-five minutes. Douglas and Brian Sheehan exchanged points before Noel McNamara rounded off the first half scoring to leave it 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval.

Douglas opened with a point from play on the changeover. Brian Sheehan responded with an excellent point the ball rattling the crossbar before going over. Another Brian Sheehan point, this time from his left boot put four between the sides, Kilworth leading 1-7 to 0-6. Douglas landed two points within a minute before Eoin Careys white flag on the stroke of the second water break left the score 1-8 to 0-8 at the three-quarter stage.

Douglas goaled on the resumption to tie up proceedings, Tom Twomey making a great save, but the rebound found the net. There was to be no score for the next seven or eight minutes with defences on top in heavy underfoot conditions. Kilworth worked a great goal in the 57th minute, a score of the highest quality, with several players involved in the build-up, Leo Coffey on the end of a Noel McNamara pass to billow the net. Another score at this stage would have probably seen us home but it was Douglas with the wind at their backs who finished the stronger with the last four points, three of them in added time to take the spoils. Our luck was out when what looked like a definite free in a scorable position wasn’t awarded with Douglas taking the spoils and progressing to the county semi-final.

Sadly, it wasn’t to be our day and the busy schedule of matches in the last number of week’s caught up in the legs towards the end of the game. However, this group of players have given us some fantastic days this year and no doubt will do so again. They made history by winning the clubs first divisional junior football title and this will live long in the memory. These are great bunch of lads and we are extremely proud of their efforts and commitment. Thanks also to their management team, great club men who put in endless hours on and off the pitch in both codes. A lot of this work goes unseen, but it’s really appreciated by all in the club. LADIES UNLUCKY

Commiserations to the Kilworth Ladies football team and their management following a 1-point defeat to Cloyne in the Junior County Final in Kilworth last Saturday afternoon. While disappointing to lose it was a great achievement to reach the final in the clubs first year in existence. There is no doubt the future is bright, and the club can look forward to 2022 with great optimism.

DOUBLE SECURED

Congratulations to the u14 Camogie team and their management who added the Cork County U14 C League Cup to their championship win from a few weeks back, defeating Grenagh in the final played in Kildorrery last Sunday morning. A great way to finish the season.

IMPORTANT MEETING

Kilworth GAA Club are holding a follow up Development Meeting in relation to the future structures of Kilworth Juvenile GAA Club on Friday November 19th at 7.30pm (Venue to be confirmed). To attend this meeting, you must be a full member (over the age of 18) of Kilworth GAA Club and vaccinated (as per current guidelines against Covid 19). It is important that as many members as possible attend this meeting. Please attend and spread the word.

The club would like to wish best wishes and a speedy recovery to club President Bill Hegarty following his recent knee surgery. It is also great to see Jimmy Hanlon out and about again.

The club would like to wish Will Condon the very best on his upcoming travel overseas. Enjoy the experience Will, but we hope you won’t be gone too long and be back in the red and white of Kilworth sooner rather than later!

ANOTHER FINAL FOR AIDAN

Congratulations to club referee Aidan Hyland who was the man in the middle for the North Cork Junior hurling championship final between Ballygiblin and Clyda Rovers last Sunday. This was another great achievement for Aidan taking charge of his second final this calendar year having officiated at the delayed 2020 football final earlier in the summer. Aidan will referee the County Junior A hurling championship semi final between Dromtarriffe and St. Ita’s this Saturday and we wish him and his team of officials well.
