TWO GOALS IN A MINUTE THE DIFFERENCE

KILWORTH 2-11 Fermoy 1-11

Two goals in a minute just before half time when trailing by two points proved the difference in this highly entertaining Fermoy Credit Union North Cork Junior A Football championship tie played in Glanworth last Friday night.

Fermoy started on the front foot and only for a last gasp goal-line clearance from Luke Carey they would have had a green flag inside the opening minute. This was a critical intervention with the resulting ‘45’ kicked wide. We had to wait until the 5th minute for the first score of the game a pointed Fermoy free. The town side had a wide each side of this score. A great team move resulted in Kilworth’s first score in the 8th minute. Liam Whelan caught a Tom Twomey kick out and passed to Eoin Carey who sent a return pass to Liam Whelan who interchanged with Nathan Byrne. The ball ended up with Brian Sheehan who drew a foul. Quick thinking from Brian resulted in a short free kick to Eoin Carey who pointed from play. Fermoy were on top in the next few passages of play but failed to convert good possession. Tom Twomey made a fine save after eleven minutes however, our defence failed to clear and conceded a close in free which Fermoy converted to lead 0-1 to 0-2. While Kilworth grew into the game at this stage the play broke down in the final third with some hesitancy in front of goal. Fermoy adding their third white flag in the 13th minute and looked certain of a goal a minute later only for Luke Carey to again make a goal line clearance, refusing to quit he stretching desperately to turn the ball around the post for a ’45’ . Fermoy failed to convert the kick and we only trailed by two points 0-1 to 0-3 at the first water break but in truth Fermoy could have been out of sight.

On the resumption good build up play involving a number of players led to a foul on Brian Sheehan with Nathan Byrne converted the free as the score read 0-2 to 0-3 after nineteen first half minutes. Fermoy responded adding their 4th point in the next passage of play, landing further points in the 22nd (free) and 23rd minutes to extend their lead to four points. Mike Sheehan with an excellent point and Fermoy exchanged scores to leave it 0-3 to 0-7 after twenty five minutes. Eoin Carey now operating at midfield converted a free after his brother Luke was upended on a foray up field. Great work from Leo Coffey, Brian Sheehan and Nathan Byrne set up Will Condon for a fisted point and the arrears was down to two points heading for the interval. Kilworth at this stage pushed up on the Fermoy kick outs with great success. A sublime ball from Eoin Carey saw Brian Sheehan coolly lob the net minder for our first goal in the 28th minute and Kilworth led for the first time in the game 1-5 to 0-7. In the very next play Will Condon won the restart before setting up Jamie Sheehan for our second goal in a minute. Eoin Carey landed his third point of the half after a great run and finish with Leo Coffey and Will Condon both excellent in the build-up. More sustained  pressure on the Fermoy rear guard led to Brian Sheehan finding Will Condon for his second fisted point of the half. The short whistle sounded and Kilworth in the space of three minutes had turned a two point deficit into a six point half time advantage and their tails were definitely up facing into the second half leading 2-7 to 0-7.

The lads continued where the left off on the change-over, Eoin Carey finding Bran Sheehan who was fouled with Eoin converting the free to push the lead to seven points 2-8 to 0-7 after thirty four minutes. Fermoy converted a free before two Brian Sheehan points in quick succession left eight points between the sides with forty minutes on the clock. The first as a result of a free following a foul on cousin Mike Sheehan, the second a fisted effort, with Luke Carey and Mike Sheehan good in the lead up. Fermoy had a spell of domination towards the end of the third quarter adding 1-1, the goal coming just before the water break whistle and the score read 2-10 to 1-9 with fifteen minutes remaining. Fermoy had the first score on the restart in the 48th minute and the lead was reduced to three points. Fermoy piled on the pressure in the next seven minutes but they failed to break our tenacious defence. They were now pushing up on our kick outs but keeper Tom Twomey relieved the pressure on a number of occasions with long accurate kicks to the middle of the field. After soaking up the pressure Eoin Carey extended the lead in the 55th minute to a more comfortable four points from a free after a foul on Leo Coffey. Fermoy had the last score of the game kicking a free in the 59th minute with Kilworth holding on for a three points winning margin, 2-11 to 1-11.

This was a great win with four points from two games played and in a good position to qualify from the group with Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels next to play. This game won’t be played for some time as its back to hurling for the next few weeks in the build up to premier Intermediate championship in September.
