FOOTBALLERS BATTLE TO A DESERVING DRAW

KILWORTH 0-8 CHARLEVILLE 0-8

A fantastic point from corner back Luke Carey earned our junior footballers a deserved draw against Charleville in Round 1 of the Fermoy Credit Union North Cork Junior Football Championship played in Castletownroche on Tuesday night.

In a low scoring contest defences were on top for long periods. In the second half Kilworth created some very scorable chances however, kicked a number of wides and in truth would have rued these misses if they hadn’t earned at least a point from this round robin opening championship game.

Missing a number or regulars Kilworth put it up to the reigning North Cork champions from the off and led 0-2 to 0-0 after three minutes. Leo Coffey opening the scoring, followed by a white flag from Jamie Sheehan after claiming a mark. A tough shot from the right for a right footed kicker he made no mistake. Charleville showed why they were crowned 2020 North Cork champions only a few weeks ago and the sides were level after five minutes with two quick points in succession. Both sides went on to have a number of wides and to borrow a phrase that is very topical in hurling at the moment ‘a lot of the play was condensed in the middle third’ with both sets of forwards struggling to find their range. We were reduced to fourteen men in the 19th minute following a black card for Eoin Carey, the resulting free left it 0-3 to 0-2 to Charleville as the whistle sounded for the first half water break. Against fifteen for most of the second quarter Kilworth played quite well, but again play broke down in the final third and while Charleville looked good through the middle one additional point  was all they had to show for by half time. Their point coming after thirty one minutes left it 0-2 to 0-4 at the short whistle.

Back to a full complement for the second half we had two early wides before Charleville extended their lead to three points by the 36th minute. Kilworth while playing very well at this stage, were on top in the second quarter but unable to convert and we had to wait until the 46th minute for the games next score. Dean Jordan found Eoin McGrath who was met with a heavy tackle and had to leave the play. Will Condon converted the resulting free to leave it 0-3 to 0-5 at the second water break.

Kilworth started the final quarter in the ascendency with Will Condon fisting a point in the 50th minute following good work from Kieran Lane and Nathan Byrne to reduce the arrears to a point. A foul on Eoin Carey while heading for goal was converted by Nathan Byrne kicking a free from the ground to tie the game up 0-5 to 0-5 by the 53rd minute. Charleville upped it and gaining a short spell of domination. Some good defending denied them a goal before they added points in the 55th and 56th minutes (1 free) to retake the lead 0-5 to 0-7. Henry Allen made it a one score game again with an opportunist point, dispossessing the Charleville keeper as he emerged from the square after gathering a high ball. Eoin Carey levelled the scores for the third time in the game with a great individual effort, gathering possession close to the side line before a penetrating run and kick off his left dissected the posts for the score of the game to that point. The contest looked to be heading for a draw but in the very next play a lapse in concentration and a mix up in defence allowed Charleville to retake the lead 0-7 to 0-8 with time now at the discretion of the referee. We were afforded one more play and the lads worked the ball confidently up the field with Luke Carey at the end of it to rifle over a kick off his right from the left, with the score of the night  to ensure a draw game. The final whistle sounded following the kick out with the final score 0-8 to 0-8.

It was great to get a result in this game after a good spirited performance full of endeavour and a never say die attitude. The lads now face near neighbours Fermoy in Round 2 Friday night.
