This functionality is especially important for players or the parents / guardians of players. Also, with Covid restrictions in place, there is unlikely to be a registration night for membership this year.

To use the Foireann system, firstly, log on to www.foireann.ie. If you used the site last year, your log in details will not have changed. If this is your first time using the site, first click “New User? Register” and follow the directions to first verify your email address and to then create your profile. Please note you must add Kilworth as your club on your profile.

Once you are set up on the system, first click the membership option on the left hand side, select Kilworth as your club and then you can select which ever membership option suits you. Please note if you are selecting any group membership option (husband/wife, family, more than one child etc) can you please click “Family” on the drop down menu and then “Add Family” to include all family members on your profile before choosing your membership option.

REELING IN THE YEARS – NORTH CORK JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONS - 1993

This week we continue our look at the North Cork Junior hurling win of 1993. Having overcome Milford in round 1 and Castletownroche in the quarter final, near neighbours Fermoy were our semi-final opponents.

Kilworth 1-13 Fermoy 3-3 (Semi Final; August 14th, 1993, Venue; Ballygiblin)

Played in heavy underfoot conditions at Ballygiblin Kilworth qualified for their second final in three years by virtue of a four point win over Fermoy in the penultimate round. From the throw in we got off to a flying start when a long range free from John Sheehan landed around the goalmouth causing anxiety in the Fermoy defence and a bad slip up allowed Pat Greehy to whip a ground ball to the net. Points from Fermoy in the fifth and sixth minutes reduced the lead to a point before a fine sideline cut from Mickey O’Brien found Sean Carey who pointed to restore a two point lead. This lead was short lived when Fermoy goaled as the first quarter elapsed and they took the lead for the first and only time in the game. Two minutes later Pat Shanahan caught a long high ball from Mickey O’Brien to point and draw the sides level 1-2 each. The last ten minutes of the half saw Kilworth land three points without reply. These came from Pat Shanahan and Aidan Kenny (2) who really came into the game when switched from half forward to midfield. The half time score thus read 1-5 to 1-2 in Kilworth’s favour.

Kilworth stared well on the turnover with an Aidan Kenny pointed free pushing Kilworth four points clear. A goal and a point from Fermoy left the sides level with twenty minutes remaining to leave the game in the balance and very much in the melting pot.  The next five minutes saw Kilworth restore our lead thanks to points from Aidan Kenny (2), Noel O’Brien and substitute Seamus Barry. Further points from Pat Shanahan and Aidan Kenny put us six points clear and we appeared to be coasting to victory with ten minutes remaining. A goal for Fermoy from a free shortly after left an edgy last few minutes as Fermoy went in search of a equalising goal, until Seamus Barry scored our insurance point on the stroke of full time to set up a final appearance against Dromina. We had many stars on the night but those who were deserving of special mention in defence were John Kiersey and Ollie Sheehan who both had a very consistent hour. Cyril Johnson and Aidan Kenny when switched both excelled in midfield while Mickey Gowen, Pat Shanahan and Pat Greehy were best in attack. Team and Scorers; J.J. Shanahan, B Sheedy, J Kiersey, J Keane, O Sheehan, J Sheehan, M Dunne, C Johnson, M O’Brien, M Gowen, N O’Brien 0-1, A Kenny 0-6, S Carey 0-1, P Shanahan 0-3, P Greehy 1-0. Sub used; S Barry 0-2 for M O’Brien.

North Cork Final

Kilworth 2-11 Dromina 2-10 (Final; October 3rd, 1993, Venue; Mallow)

North Cork champions after a two year absence, Kilworth gained revenge for a quarter final loss to the same opponents a year earlier, with a Mickey Gowen match winning point a minute into injury time to send Kilworth’s huge following into raptures.

Despite the greasy underfoot conditions both sides served up a thrilling final before a huge crowd at Mallow. The sides were level six times in a marvellous contest that ebbed and flowed. Kilworth were quickly into their stride with a Pat Shanahan point after twenty seconds, quickly followed a minute later with an Aidan Kenny pointed free. Dromina added 1-1 without reply to lead after ten minutes but by the end of the first quarter the sides were deadlocked following a point each from Mickey Gowen and Mickey Dunne.  Dromina and Aidan Kenny exchanged points with some magnificent goalkeeping from both the Dromina keeper and John Joe Shanahan kept the score down. However, in the 25th minute the Dromina keeper attempted to stop the ball going over the crossbar from a Sean Carey strike and Pat Greehy took full advantage to goal. This helped Kilworth to a three point lead, and a second green flag was to follow two minutes later when Aidan Kenny cleared down field for Pat Shanahan to find the net with a powerful shot. Two further points from Dromina and Pat Shanahan with a white flag saw Kilworth turning over 2-6 to 1-5 in front

The ball was hardly thrown in to restart the game with Dromina rattled the Kilworth net to reduce our lead to the minimum. Four times in the second half the sides were level as both sides’ battles for the honour of their respective villages. John Sheehan pointed a ‘65 before Dromina scored three points on the bounce to lead by one at the three-quarter mark. Points from John Sheehan and Cyril Johnson restored our lead. Two Dromina points either side of a Sean Carey point from his boot left the sides deadlocked at 2-10 each with seven minutes remaining. As the time ticked down, it looked as if both sides were heading to battle it out another day, however Dromina conceded a late free. John Sheehan’s effort dropped into the square and with the referee looking at his watch, Mickey Gowen scooped the ball over the bar for the winner score to the delight of our huge following. This was a great all-round team performance. After the game Tom Dorgan, Chairman of the North Cork Board presented captain Ollie Sheehan with the cup amidst great applause and cheering from our large following. Our winning team on duty was; J.J. Shanahan, B Sheedy, J Kiersey, J Keane, A Kenny 0-2, O Sheehan, M Dunne 0-1, J Sheehan 0-2, C Johnson 0-1, M Gowen 0-2, N O’Brien, M O’Brien, S Carey 0-1, P Shanahan 1-2, P Greehy 1-0. Sub used S Barry for M O’Brien.

A great night awaited when the team and mentors were led through the village by the Thomas Kent Pipe Band. Speeches followed by club chairperson Peg Sheedy, Fred Sheedy on behalf of management, and team captain Ollie Sheehan, with all  involved looking forward to a county campaign with a quarter final tie against Meelin a week later, on October 10th

On the County Trail

Kilworth 2-9 Meelin 1-11 (County Quarter Final; October 10th, 1993, Venue; Kanturk)

A week on from divisional triumph, Kilworth advancing to meet Glen Rovers in the county semi-final holding out for a one-point win over Meelin in a game that provided wonderful entertainment for the large attendance at Kanturk. A dramatic scoring burst in the opening four minutes of the second half when we scored 2-1 to stun a Meelin side that had led by 0-7 to 0-5 at the interval was key to victory. These scores put Kilworth five points in front and with another point in the 40th minutes we looked all over winners. But Meelin called on all their experience and fighting spirit to work their way back into the game and they managed to score 1-4 to Kilworth’s two points in the last twenty minutes. The scores were level with ten minutes to go and in a hectic finish it was Kilworth who pushed ahead to snatch victory by the narrowest of margins.

Meelin led four points to two at the end of the first quarter, Pat Greehy being Kilworth’s scorer from frees. After a hesitant start, Kilworth with Pat Greehy, Pat Shanahan and Mikey Gowen playing well in attach and John Sheehan, Noel O’Brien and Ollie Sheehan also impressing, came strongly into the game before Meelin won back control in the last ten minutes of the first half leading at the interval by 0-7 to 0-5.

The game was delicately balanced at that stage by Kilworth’s scoring spurt after the resumption put a completely different complexion on matters. The first goal came when Mickey Gowen worked his way through the Meelin defence finding Pat Shanahan whose deflection was first timed by Pat Greehy to the net for a marvellous goal. Two minutes later Sean Carey rose to a Mickey Gowen sideline puck and deflected to the net, Points by Pat Shanahan and Pat Greehy put us six points clear and looking very much like winners. Meelin rallied strongly inspired by a goal from a free and three further points had the scores level with 10 minutes to go. There was great excitement from here to the end with two Kilworth points by Sean Carey to one from Meelin giving us victory by the bare minimum and we were sixty minutes away from a County final appearance. Our best on view were J.J Shanahan, John Kiersey, Ollie Sheehan, Mickey Dunne, Cyril Johnson and Mickey Gowen. Team and Scorers: J.J. Shanahan, B Sheedy, J Kiersey, J Keane, A Kenny, O Sheehan, M Dunne, J Sheehan, C Johnson, M Gowen 0-1, N O’Brien, S Barry, S Carey 1-2, P Shanahan 0-2, P Greehy 1-4. Sub used: B Carey for S Barry.

Kilworth 1-9 Glen Rovers 0-7 (County Semi Final; October 17th, 1993, Venue; Lisgoold)

On the road for the third consecutive Sunday our junior hurlers advanced to the County final for the first time since 1980 by virtue of a five-point win over Glen Rovers at a sun drenched Lisgoold. In ideal conditions for hurling, a Sean Carey goal proved the decisive score in a game where our full forward line of Pat Greehy, Pat Shanahan and Sean Carey accounted for all of Kilworth’s tally.

Two points from Pat Greehy and two from the Glen saw the sides level 0-2 each in the opening period. Pat Shanahan gave us the lead for the first time with a fine point. Twenty minutes in the very industrious Seamus Barry found Sean Carey loose to increase our lead to two points. Three minutes later after making a great run out of defence Michael Dunne was fouled and Pat Greehy pointed the resultant free to give us a three-point advantage after twenty five minutes. Two Glen points just before half time saw Kilworth leading 0-5 to 0-4 at half time. A beautiful point from Sean Carey near the sideline and two pointed frees from Pat Greehy saw us race into a four-point lead five minutes into the second half. The next ten minutes saw the Glen shoot over three points with just the bare minimum between the sides as the final quarter approached. With ten minutes to play a free out from Brian Sheedy was flicked on by Sean Carey past a bewildered Glen keeper for a rather fortunate goal. This was the score we badly needed to take the pressure off and when Pat Greehy pointed a free three minutes from time our place in the County final against Blarney was assured. Players to shine were Brian Sheedy, Ollie Sheehan, Aidan Kenny, Mike Dunne, Seamus Barry and Sean Carey. Team and Scorers: J.J. Shanahan, B Sheedy, J Kiersey, J Keane, A Kenny, O Sheehan, M Dunne, J Sheehan, C Johnson, M Gowen, N O’Brien, S Barry, S Carey 1-3, P Shanahan 0-1, P Greehy 0-5. Sub used: M O’Brien for N O’Brien.

Kilworth 1-9 Blarney 2-10 (County Final; October 31st, 1993, Venue; Pairc Ui Chaoimh)

Wearing the black and amber colours of Avondhu, Kilworth took on Mid Cork champions Blarney at Pairc Ui Chaoimh for the right to play at intermediate level in 1994. In a marvellous contest, full of passion and commitment the Muskerry men took the spoils winning the title, bridging a 57-year gap. A very capable Blarney side had Kilworth under pressure from the outset and maintained their advantage into the second half. Whilst Blarney were undoubtedly the better side, Kilworth supporters will always wonder if a different outcome may have transpired if Pat Shanahan’s bullet like effort which rattled the crossbar in the second half had been two inches lower. Unfortunately, however the sliotar rebounded to safety and Blarney went on to take the title on a 2-10 to 1-9 scoreline.

Teak tough in defence where they conceded little, Blarney raced into a four point lead inside the opening ten minutes. John Joe Shanahan brough off two good saves before Pat Greehy opened our account from a pointed free 15 minutes in and it paved the way for four more on the trot as Kilworth finally found their feet. The scores came from two pointed Pat Greehy frees and one each from Aidan Kenny and Seamus Barry as we took the lead for the first and only time after twenty seven minutes. A point from Blarney and the sides were deadlocked at five a piece when Blarney struck for the crucial opening goal just before the break, to give the Muskerry men an interval lead of 1-5 to 0-5.

A Blarney point stretched their lead a minute after the resumption before Pat Shanahan was only inches wide after Mikey Dunne had created the opening. The hurling was fast and furious in the second half as both sides battled for supremacy but it was Blarneys ability to pick off points was crucial and by the three quarter stage they had stretched their lead to five points. Blarney were now in full flow and they goaled for the second time in the 46th minute. The goal was short lived however as Kilworth came storming back throwing caution to the wind and got the tonic of a goal when Pat Greehy rattled the net with a ground stroke following a great pass from Pat Shanahan. Blarney were visibly shaken by the goal and we very nearly had a second a minute later with Pat Shanahan rattled the crossbar before the sliotar was scrambled to safety. As gallantly as Kilworth tried and battled, time and again Blarney broke Kilworth hearts with some super play and our only return for all the pressure were two points from Pat Greehy and Aidan Kenny in the closing minutes. We did have a goal disallowed in the last minute when Pat Shanahan got his hurley to an Aidan Kenny ’65 but referee John Motherway ruled a square infringement. Even though defeat was our lot, our lads could hold their heads high after contributing to a very entertaining final.

Team and Scorers: J.J Shanahan, B Sheedy, J Kiersey, J Keane, A Kenny 0-2, O Sheehan, M Dunne, J Sheehan, C Johnson, M Gowen, N O’Brien 0-1, S Barry 0-1, S Carey 0-1, P Shanahan, P Greehy 1-4. Subs used; M O’Brien for S Barry, K O’Donoghue for J Keane, S Barry for M Gowen. Other panel members; B Carey, L Magnier, G Sheehan, T Sheehan, T O’Brien, A Hyland, R Clancy, T McCormack, F McCormack, D McCormack, S McCarthy

While disappointing to lose out in the county final the team had a great run regaining the North Cork title. They showed great spirit and character all year with some very exciting and close wins. The final was just a step too far and lady luck didn’t shine on the day. Great credit must go to the panel of players and the management team namely Fred Sheedy, Mossie McNamara and Lar Flynn for their effort and dedication that they put in over the year.

Club PRO in 1993 was John ‘Chelsea ‘Condon and thanks to his detailed reports at the time and also ‘the Avondhu Archive’ we are able to bring the hurling year of 1993 back to life.
