THROWBACK THURSDAY
The Beamish Cup dates back to 1947 when it was presented by Beamish & Crawford to Mr. Jack Cotter who’s public house on Main Street during that era was a Beamish house. Jack at the time was the President of the local Kilworth club with the purpose of the cup to be for an local annual tournament. The prestigious Beamish Cup tournament featured some splendid displays of hurling throughout its existence, however local title honours did not arrive until 1953 when Kilworth overcame Mountroe (disbanded in 1958) who hailed from the Corrogurm area of the Mitchelstown parish.
Match reports from the final which was played on Sunday August 2nd state that a fine crowd was in attendance to witness the match which was played at a cracking pace. Mountroe who just four months earlier overcame Kilworth 4-05 to 3-01 in the first round of the North Cork Novice Hurling tie started the better in this encounter, and after 15 minutes played they had 2-01 racked up without reply from the home side. Kilworth who were trained by Martin Howard eventually found their rhythm and managed to turn the tide for the second quarter and by the interval had reduced the deficit to a mere point with two goals coming from the sticks of Jim Gallagher and Mick Barry respectively.
Further points upon the restart from Mick Cahill and Batt O’Brien gave Kilworth a slight advantage for the first time in the contest but Mountroe duly responded with two points of their own to once again regain their lead. This was short lived however as through quickly blotted out points by Dave Daly and Jim Howard in the final quarter Kilworth for the first time looked set to triumph. With seconds remaining before the final whistle sounded a long range 80 meter free taken by midfielder Mick Dunne went straight into the Mountroe net sealing the victory for the home side on a final scoreline of 3-04 to 2-03 leaving the proud Kilworth captain Bill Magnier receive the Beamish Cup from Jack Cotter for the very first time.
