KILWORTH GAA NOTES 03 MAY 2020 2020-05-03 10:28:00

THE VILLAGE FONDLY REMEMBERS SHOPKEEPER TONY O’FLYNN

This week we were deeply saddened to learn of the sad passing of Tony O ’Flynn in Dublin. We all have very fond memories of Tony growing up in the village as we called in to see his friendly face in the shop on the main street in Kilworth. He had a unique sense of humour, a great character who was always up for a laugh and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. We extend our sympathies to Lillian and Tony’s extended family on his sad passing. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Thank you to everyone in the village who lined the street on Saturday to pay their respects to Tony after his funeral mass.

HISTORIC DAY AS KILWORTH CROWNED INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONS 2012

This week we are throwing it back to 2012, when our intermediate hurlers were crowned Cork County Intermediate Hurling champions after a hard-fought win over Kanturk. Let’s travel back to eight years ago and read the match report from that famous final win on Sunday October 14th, 2012. Sit back and enjoy!

Cork County Intermediate Hurling Championship Final 2012: Kilworth 2-15 Kanturk 2-13

What a weekend it’s been for Kilworth GAA Club! All the training and hard work has finally paid off for our Intermediate hurlers as they were crowned the worthy Cork County Intermediate Hurling Champions for 2012on Sunday evening last, October 14th. The long wait was finally ended when we defeated the men of Kanturk on the finishing score line of 2-15 to 2-13. It was a great game and a brilliant day for everyone in our little village. All roads led to Páirc Uí Rinn for the 3:45pm throw-in and a huge Kilworth crowd attended on Sunday to witness this historic occasion. On behalf of the club we would like to sincerely thank all those who made the trip up to Cork and your support was greatly appreciated by everyone involved. The team admit that it was as good as having a 16th player on the pitch when they really needed it. The sea of red and white was a fantastic sight to behold and the atmosphere was electric.

The scene was set, and the referee blew the whistle for the game to begin. Kilworth had the advantage of a slight breeze in the first half but it was Kanturk who made the dream start as they were 1-4 to 0-0 ahead after just 9 minutes of play. The opposition were winning all the breaking ball and seemed to be in control in every area of the field. Their opening goal came in the 9th minute after a long range free was pulled on in the square and ended up in the back of the net. We were out of the game and looked uncertain on the ball until Adrian Mannix registered our opening score from a close range free in the 10th minute. This was quickly followed up by another pointed free from the full forward to leave the score line at 1-4 to 0-2 after 12 minutes. A vital score game Kilworth’s way a minute later when, Paudie Lynch won the ball out by the side-line and ran in to score a fantastic goal past Anthony Nash to cut the gap to just 2 points with 15 minutes still to play in the first half. Kanturk responded with a point and the just one score separated the sides, 1-5 to 1-2. Both sides continued to exchange scores for the remainder of the half with Kanturk faring better, outscoring us by 4 points to 3. Nathan Byrne closed the scoring of the half with a point from play and after a minute of injury time the referee blew the whistle for half time. Despite Kanturks dominance Kilworth just trailed by 4 points, with the score line reading 1-9 to 1-5. They had a lot of work to do in the second half, but the game was far from over and we were still confident that the game could be won.

Kilworth came out in the second half and got the best start they could have wished for when Noel McNamara got in to score a fantastic goal after just 25 seconds and this was seen as the turning point of the game. The gap was instantly cut to one before Adrian Mannix levelled things up with a point a minute later. Suddenly the game was all to play for as the score line read 2-6 to 1-9 with only two minutes of the second half played. Adrian Mannix added another point in the 3rd minute to push Kilworth into the lead for the first time in the game. Kanturk didn’t lie down though and after scoring two consecutive points in the 10th and 11th minutes, they moved back into the lead, 2-7 to 1-11. A great point from Noel McNamara from a tight angle and another from Mannix in the 13th minute pushed us back into the lead once again. Kilworth finished strongly and every player on the pitch played their part, with the defence working extremely hard to put the Kanturk forwards under severe pressure and forcing them to put the ball wide. Between the 12th minute and the 22nd minute of the second half, Kilworth outscored the opposition by 0-4 to no score. Mannix (2), McNamara (1) and Captain Brian Tobin(1) all added their names to the score sheet and moved Kilworth into a four point lead with just 8 minutes of normal time to play. However, Kanturk never gave up and scored a well taken goal in the 23rd minute to leave the score line reading 2-12 to 2-11 and set the game up for an exciting, pulsating finish. Kilworth responded with a point from Lynch to increase the gap to 2 again, but this was quickly cut back to a point when Kanturk scored another point from play. Points from McNamara and Mannix put 3 between the sides again as the clock ticked into injury time. Kanturk closed out the game with a late point but by then the game was over and as the referee blew the full time whistle the celebrations began, we were county champions once again.

The scene on the pitch after the game was fantastic to see for both player and supporter alike and a great occasion to be a part of. A sea of red and white descended onto the pitch to congratulate their hurling heroes. The team then made their way to the stand for the cup presentation where Captain Brian Tobin lifted the trophy to a rapturous applause and a tremendous cheer. After the game the team made their way to Corbett Court for a beautiful meal and on behalf of the club, we would like to sincerely thank you for your hospitality and food. It was greatly appreciated by all.

The team then made their way back to Kilworth where they paraded through the village in Mike Twomey’s truck at about 9pm, and we would like to thank him very much for that. The team were met in front of a huge local crowd and it was great to see, the mixture of both young and old out to congratulate the lads on their mighty win. They received a fantastic reception and the atmosphere in the village was brilliant on the night and throughout the week that followed. This win is especially good for the young players of the club too, who will be inspired by the win, to go on and have the same success of their own in years to come. It is fair to say a great night of celebrations was had by one and all!

On behalf of the club we would like to sincerely congratulate Manager Declan Walsh, Coach TJ Ryan, Selectors Aidan Kenny and Fred Sheedy, Conditioning Coach Damien O’ Donoghue, Team Assistant Darren Kenny, Physio Caroline Coughlan and Medic Mike Walsh on this fantastic victory. You all put in a tremendous amount of work throughout the year and this win would not be possible without your help so thank you all for everything. A massive congratulation is sent to all the players for a brilliant performance on Sunday and throughout the year. Many sacrifices were made, and you all put in a lot of hard work, so well done again. The club would like to thank every club who sent us their best wishes before and after the game. They were very much appreciated. We would also like to thank Bob Burke for his use of the PA system and the Thomas Kent Pipe Band for coming out and playing Sunday night. It all added to the wonderful occasion. Our eyes now turn to the league final on Saturday next when we hope to be celebrating final success again!
