SUCCESS FOR INTERMEDIATE HURLERS
Last week, on Tuesday evening, April 22nd, our Premier Intermediate hurlers travelled to Cloughduv to contest the local contingent at their Ryecourt venue in the fourth round clash of the Red FM sponsored Division 4 Hurling League. Eager for success after two negative results on the bounce against St. Catherine’s and Watergrasshill respectively, Kilworth hit the ground running in this high scoring encounter and held significant advantages at both the half and full time whistles.
Liam Óg Hegarty got Kilworth of the mark through a converted 65” after 3 minutes played and after five wides between the sides with four coming from Kilworth camán’s, Cloughduv finally equalized from a placed ball strike on the 10 minute mark. Kilworth, however, excelled over the next 7 minutes by bagging 2-2 in rapid succession with both goals coming 60 seconds apart from corner forward Liam Óg and midfielder Eoin Carey respectively.
Cloughduv had to wait 18 minutes to nab their second score of the evening all which was down to some fine solid defending from the Kilworth defense. Kilworth once again upped their momentum and kept the umpire busy waving flags by adding a further 1-3 with Michael Gowen at the dispensing end of the Kilworth goal leaving Kilworth ten points in front after 27 minutes played. Cloughduv, however, didn’t sit back and hit some decent scores of their own before the interval to leave the half time scoreline reading 3-07 to 1-04.
The latter half was a high scoring event with both goalkeepers kept busy excelling their puckout strategies. William Condon who was wearing the number 11 jersey and Liam Óg were the Kilworth go to men over the next 15 minutes as they added three points apiece to Cloughduv’s three, which all came from converted frees, leaving the Muskerry divisional outfit twelve points in arrears after 45 minutes played.
The green and gold coloured side didn’t retreat just yet and to their credit finished the strongest of the teams by landing 1-6 over the remaining minutes albeit 1-2 came from placed balls. Jeremy Saich added his name to the scoresheet with an accurately taken point on the 52nd minute and Eoin Carey finished off the Kilworth scoring with three points from play to leave the full time scoreline reading Kilworth 3-17, Cloughduv 2-13.

THROWBACK THURSDAY
1993 - In what was an extremely prominent year for the club Kilworth were firstly victorious at Minor A level winning the North Cork hurling league and championship grade competitions. After overcoming rivals Newtownshandrum in the North Cork championship final Kilworth went on the beat Newcestown 1-10 to 0-8 in the County quarter-final before unfortunately going under to Eire Óg in the semi-final on a scoreline of 4-4 to 1-9.
In the Junior A hurling grade after a 2 year absence Kilworth regained the North Cork Junior A hurling championship title with a 2-11 to 2-10 victory over Dromina with Michael Gowen scoring the match winning point a minute into injury time. The path to the North Cork final saw Kilworth defeat Milford, Castletownroche, and Fermoy whilst after a county quarter-final victory over Meelin 2-9 to 1-11 followed by a 5 point semi-final victory over Glen Rovers 1-9 to 0-7 Kilworth headed to Páirc Uí Chaoimh to contest Blarney in the County Final.
Kilworth took to the field wearing the black and amber colours of Avondhu for this encounter which at the time was the clubs fourth county final appearance at this grade (winners in 1967 over Cloughduv and runners-up in 1961 to Cloyne, & 1980 to Newcestown) but were unfortunately no match for the Mid-Cork side who were 2-10 to 1-9 winners on the day. Interestingly, Kilworth had 3 survivors from the 1980 county final team to call upon for this encounter with Pat Greehy, and the Shanahan brothers Pat (Chopper) and John Joe, RIP, providing the experience, with the entry cost to the finale at Cork’s HQ set at £10 for a family of four!
Kilworth finished off the year with further silverware as they retained the league title with a one point victory over Shanballymore on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-8 courtesy again of a last minute point this time from the camán of wing back Aidan Kenny who struck over a long range 70 yard free securing a rare North Cork double for the Junior A hurlers.
Pictured in 1993 displaying the clubs Minor A and Junior A league and championship winning trophies are: Back row (l-r) Mossy McNamara (Junior Selector), Fred Sheedy RIP (Junior Coach/Selector), Lar Flynn RIP (Junior & Minor Selector), John Kenny (Minor Selector), & Pat (Chopper) Shanahan (Minor Selector). At the front are Ollie Sheehan (Junior Captain), & Donal Kenneally (Minor Captain).
