THROWBACK THURSDAY

Having lost to Mitchelstown by a single point in the second round of the 1964 Junior Hurling Championship on Sunday July 5th Kilworth’s focus at adult level was redirected to the bigger ball for the remainder of the season. A news report synopsises for early October of that year named “GAA Affairs in North Cork” was to a large degree of the opinion that Kilworth would reach the North Cork Novice Football Championship final adding that the clubs side deserve a very promising rating in this contest. Also, some positive news leading up to this encounter was that Kilworth along with seven other divisional clubs were to receive a grant of £50 from the North Cork Board owing to matchday gate receipts.

Kilworth’s first encounter in the novice football championship which was played in Fermoy on Sunday October 18th was a local derby against St. Michaels (Araglen), which for the record was also the day of the Kilworth hurling and football club annual church gate collection! Played as a curtain raiser for the Youghal v Rathluírc Intermediate hurling league game, which the former comfortably outclassed the latter winning on a scoreline of 4-19 to 2-2, match reports state that the football game provided a far more thrilling fare than the game at the higher grade, with Kilworth and Araglen presenting a standard of football which was well above the novice class. With referee J. Denigan overseeing proceedings, Kilworth had the slight edge over their opponents in the first half and at the interval were leading by 1-2 to 0-3. In the second half although Araglen seemed to have most of the play they were unable to reduce the lead, producing only a lone green flag in the remaining 30 minutes while Kilworth added a goal and three points to their tally.

Two weeks later on Sunday 1st November all roads led to Glanworth for the no.1 area semi-final fixture with Mitchelstown providing the opposition. Mr. P. Sullivan, the referee in charge of this fixture must have had a pain in his head from blowing his whistle as the match report states that the Kilworth blend completely overwhelmed Mitchelstown to the tune of 9-11 to 1-2 which was all over for the “cheesemakers” in the first quarter. They were blasted out of this championship through a sensational Kilworth blitz which sustained itself right up to the final whistle. Leading by 6-8 to 1-0 after 30 minutes, the architects of this victory were Jimmy Condon, Ritchie Carey, Billie Kiersey, Sean O’Callaghan, John Carey, and Mick Donnellan who sparked in a side which looked complete in every respect.

Seven days later, on Sunday November 8th at Shanballymore, referee Eric Ryan was put in charge of the North Cork Final which featured Kilworth and the Sons of Liberty (Ballyclough) clubs with entry to this showpiece set at 1 shilling & 6 pence! (equivalent to approximately 23 cent today). Match reports from this encounter are marginally slim mainly owing to the full-time scoreline of 5-13 to 0-0 which saw Kilworth who were coached by Dermot Costello collect the Novice football crown for the very first time in the clubs history by crushing their opponents on a runaway margin.

Positive Start to Kilworth Araglen Óg Season.

After a busy number of weeks consisting of meetings, courses, planning, sessions, seminars and training, it was finally great to get back playing, and a great start was made to the new season with a positive result from our first game.

The first match of the year for the Kilworth Araglen Óg under-16s was away against our neighbors Kildorrery. It was our first time out on a pitch in 2025 due to recent bad weather and our first game under the new rules. Kilworth Araglen Óg had the wind in the first half, which ended 2-5 to 0-3, but Kildorrery rallied in the second half and the game finished up 4-7 to 12 points in favor of Kilworth Araglen Óg. All in all, it was a very competitive match, but as the saying goes, “goals win games,” and KA Óg took the spoils. There were lots of learnings with the new rules and much to work on for the year. Thanks to Dave Farrell  for his officiating of the game and keeping it flowing with the new rules. Well done all involved and onwards and upwards all!
