THROWBACK THURSDAY

Having been the most consistent Junior A hurling team within the Avondhu division during the 1960’s, Kilworth in 1967 finally claimed ultimate honours as they overcame Cloughduv in the County Final at the Cork Athletic Grounds on a final scoreline of 3-11 to 2-07. In 1968 Kilworth lined out at Intermediate level for the very first time where they competed for 3 consecutive seasons. In their first year Kilworth recorded championship wins over the highly fancied Nemo Rangers followed by Shamrocks, before a heart-breaking single point third round loss to Glen Rovers. This defeat would become even harder to take as two days following that game Glen Rovers withdrew from all County Championships in protest of the suspension of one of their players. The following press match report was produced following the first round win over Nemo Rangers:

Winning Trail

Kilworth hurlers qualified for the second round of the County Intermediate Championship, when scoring a 3-9 to 3-2 success over Nemo Rangers, the city side, at the Clonmult Memorial Park, Midleton last Sunday. At the interval and having played against the breeze, Kilworth trailed by 3-1 to 1-3. However, five minutes after the resumption that lead was quickly cancelled out as the County Junior Champions hit the winning trail.

For Patsy O’Mahony who came on as a substitute in last year’s junior final against Cloughduv to score a goal which gave Kilworth the lead for the first time, last Sundays hour was another success. He emerged from the game with a personal tally of 3-1 from the right corner forward position. Other Kilworth scorers were Tom Halloran and Fred Sheedy (0-3) each, with Danny Fenton and Dinny Condon (0-1) each.

An absence from the visitors line out was Jerry Keating. His place as midfield partner for Danny Fenton was taken by Michael O’Riordan. Jim Condon, Lar Flynn and John Carey fronted Liam Shanahan in goal. Bill Russell who had returned to Araglen colours had his right half back position filled by Dave O’Riordan. At centre back and on the opposite wing Johnie Hogan and Seanie Long filled the positions. Kieran Casey on the “40” was flanked by Tom Halloran and Fred Sheedy. Patsy O’Mahony, Pat Farren, and Dinny Condon completed the attack.
