GAA PHRASES FROM THE SIDELINE – PART 2

Who’s down to ref it: The first thing you’ll be asked as soon as you get out of the car usually followed by “Ah we haven’t a chance so” when the said ref is seen as one with bias against your club.

Mullocker: Untidy or awkward player who is usually brought on by the management team in winter like weather conditions with instructions to sort it out.

Jolt: A good push – I gave him a fairly good jolt which wasn’t long quietening him.

Rake: A great amount of anything – Usually consuming substantial amounts of porter the night before an important match.

Leh-it-in-would-ya: Usually screamed at a midfielder or half back, regardless of whether or not there is anyone in the full forward line.

Row: Disagreement involving four or more players.

Massive Row: Disagreement involving both teams, including goalkeepers, substitutes and backroom team.

Let him know you’re there: Reminding a corner back to introduce himself to the lively young corner forward.

Fierce drive of a ball: High praise usually given to a goalkeeper or full back.

A Hang Sangwidge: Consumed with “Tay” at the booth of a car after matches in Croke Park or Thurles, usually contains half a pound of butter.

Hit the square: Stop fiddling and farting with the ball and let it in – Usually shouted by the full forward when he wants the route one style approach.

Black Card – Shouted at the referee for every foul committed during the match, regardless of whether it’s a black card offence or not.

Jaysus he wouldn’t get a kick in a horsebox – Usually aimed at some poor junior player who has managed to get a run with the seniors due to the lack of numbers available.

That’ll be a tasty one: When two local rival clubs draw each other in the Championship – Code for “they’ll be some schemozzles in that game”.
