Kilworth GAA Club Notes 09 January 2025 2025-02-17 10:11:00

2025 CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES RELEASED

Fixtures have now been finalised by the CCC for the 2025 Cork Co-Op Superstores County Hurling Championship. In the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship (PIHC) grade Kilworth were allocated the bottom seed “B” following last season’s gallant effort in claiming an imperative result in the regulation playoff game against Aghabullogue. The championship structure which follows the same as last season is comprised of three groups with four teams in each contesting each other in a round robin series of fixtures. Kilworth were drawn from the pot in group 2 and just like a repeat of 2022 this tough group consists of Ballincollig, Ballinhassig, and Castlemartyr.

On Friday August 1st Kilworth will get their campaign underway wearing their black away coloured jerseys against Castlemartyr in R1 at 7.30pm in Youghal. Two weeks later, on Saturday August 16th Kilworth contest the Ronan Curran trained Ballincollig in R2 at 6.30pm in Rathcormac. In the final group game three weeks later, on Sunday September 7th Kilworth once again travel to Rathcormac to contest Ballinhassig for a fifth consecutive season in R3 at 2pm.

Pat O’Brien is once again back at the helm overseeing activities for this year’s campaign with his backroom team composing of the returning Ex-Waterford hurler Seán “Growler” Daly as coach alongside selectors John Sheehan, Darren Kenny, Aidan Kenny, & Noel Gowen. The club would like to wish everyone involved the absolute best of luck in their quest for the Seamus Long Cup.

2025 LEAGUE FIXTURES

Kilworth will participate in Division 4 of the Red FM County Senior Hurling Leagues in 2025. This division consists of ten teams (Bandon, Bishopstown, Cloughduv, Inniscarra, Kildorrery, Kilworth, St. Catherines, Tracton, Watergrasshill & Youghal). The County League programme has now been issued to all clubs and we will get our 2025 league campaign underway on the weekend on March 9th. Confirmed fixtures will be issued to all clubs by the CCC in the coming weeks with the league finals provisionally scheduled for July 6th.

DATE FOR DIARY

The club will hold a medal presentation for the successful 2024 Kilworth Junior Hurlers who after a 21 year lapse were last season crowned North Cork Junior B2 Hurling Champions. Reminiscing on that famous victory, which was played in Castletownroche on October 13th last, the lads when trailing by 10 points after 35 minutes played, dug deep and reignited their engines to claim a 1-point victory over rivals Newtownshandrum in the final of the Denis Gallagher Refrigeration Centenary Junior B2 Hurling Championship. This function will be held on Saturday evening January 25th in Aherne’s Bar, Kilworth at 8.30pm, and all players are urged to attend as we recognise this remarkable achievement.

TOM O’HALLORAN R.I.P.

We were all very saddened over the Christmas period to hear of the sad passing of local gentleman and great Gael, Tom O’Halloran. Tom was a much noted GAA man in his playing days and won many accolades down through the years which included ultimate honours in football at Junior, Intermediate, & Senior County levels.

Tom lined out for Mitchelstown in 1961 wearing the number 4 jersey when they claimed their first ever County Junior A Football Championship with a 4 point victory over O’Donovan Rossa. Two months earlier Tom laid claim to the prestigious County Senior Football Championship medal when as part of the Avondhu Senior Football side they beat Clonakilty which brought honours to the divisional side for the very first time. Fast forward four years and once again Tom was successful, as he lined out for Mitchelstown after they regraded down from senior ranks and defeated St. Vincents in the reintroduced 1965 Intermediate Football Championship Final.

Back on home soil and switching codes to Hurling Tom was also a member of the 1967 Kilworth Junior A Hurling side who won the clubs first ever County Junior A Hurling Championship title. Having gone under in the North Cork final the previous year, Tom transferred and lined out at midfield for Kilworth as they overcame Cloughduv at the Cork Athletic Grounds on a final scoreline of 3-11 to 2-07 and claimed his fourth County medal.

A brilliant player in his heyday as well as a true gentleman, Tom was a great character who enjoyed the banter and was always up for telling a yarn or two and loved having a chat with the locals as they passed by his house where he positioned himself against his boundary wall daily. He also enjoyed a sociable pint which always had to be from the “middle of the barrel”!

The large crowd that turned out for his removal and funeral were testament to the respect that he held. The number 4 Mitchelstown jersey alongside the red and white Kilworth GAA flag, and the green and white Araglen GAA flag all draping together on his coffin, to the guard of honour from the church up to his house at the pound lane junction that was formed by GAA members, both past and present was only fitting for the man himself.

To all of Tom’s extended family together with his wide circle of friends and neighbours we extend our deepest sympathy. May the sod lay lightly on your grave old friend. R.I.P

JOHNNY KENNEALLY R.I.P.

It was with great sadness last week that we learned of the extremely sad and untimely passing of well-known local man Johnny Kenneally. Regularly seen at Kilworth GAA contests Johnny was an absolute character who loved the banter, was full of roguery and had a giggle that always left you smiling. He held an interest in all sports including soccer, greyhounds and horse racing, and was a keen supporter of Kilworth GAA, Camogie and LGFA clubs. Johnny took great pride in all his families achievements and had a heart of gold who left everyone he knew with fond memories to forever cherish be it at GAA contests, Cheltenham races, Old Trafford, New York, or simply in the village that he adored so much.

Johnny’s popularity was evident by the extremely large representative attendance that congregated for his removal, requiem mass and burial. The red and white Kilworth GAA flag draped on his coffin and the guard of honour that was formed by GAA members, friends and colleagues was a fitting testament for the man himself and he will be profoundly missed by everyone associated with the club, his wide circle of friends, and his loving family.

To Johnny’s wife Deirdre, our current club medic & health and wellbeing officer, his children Bébhinn, Éirinn, & current player Seán Óg, his mother Peggy, sisters Geraldine, & Aisling, brothers Donal, Ruairí, & David, and mother-in-law Kit together with the extended Kenneally & Clancy families, we offer our heartfelt condolences, and our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you at this very difficult time. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. R.I.P

BEST OF LUCK

The club would like to wish the very best of luck to both Russell Rovers and Watergrasshill GAA clubs who contest the 2024 AIB GAA Junior and Intermediate All-Ireland Club Championship Hurling Finals respectively this coming Sunday afternoon January 12th at Croke Park.
