REELING IN THE YEARS – JUNIOR HURLING TITLE NUMBER 11

15 years ago, almost to the date (Sunday September 10th, 2006) Kilworth annexed the 2006 North Cork Junior hurling championship in route to winning the County Championship for the first time since 1967. Four members of that starting team 15 years ago are part of the 2021 premier Intermediate panel in championship action on Sunday: Kieran Walsh, Maurice McNamara, Mark O’Connor, and Brian Tobin. Here is the match report of the North Cork Final from yours truly as carried in the Avondhu edition from September 14th, 2006.

CLINICAL SECOND HALF PERFORMANCE SEALS VICTORY

Kilworth 1-17 Charleville 0-12

Kilworth hurling with conviction, produced a classic second half display to defend their North Cork title and win back-to-back championships for the first time in thirty-nine years. A superb last twenty minutes, when we outscored our opponents 1-9 to 0-1, laid the foundations for a well-deserved win over a gallant Charleville side, at a well prepared Shanballymore venue last Sunday afternoon.

Played in front of a huge attendance, the game was very even in the opening half as were the opening exchange in the second period. Charleville led by two points (0-9 to 0-7) at the short whistle and maintained their lead until the 41st minute. Charleville started quickly and were 0-2 to 0-0 to the good after five minutes. Both sides had a number of wides in this period as they got to grips with the pace of the game.

Elton Pierce opened our account with a point from play in the 6th minute. The Charleville defence failed to clear a sideline cut from Elton, due to some great pressure from Adrian Mannix and Damien O ‘Donoghue. The ball fell to Elton and he made no mistake with the score. Joe Cahill landed his first point of the game a minute later. Kilworth took the lead for the first time in the next passage of play when Paudie Lynch pointed a free after a foul on Adrian Mannix who turned his marker beautifully. Will Twomey and Maurice McNamara in defence and Joe Cahill were instrumental in the build up to this score. A great clearance under pressure from keeper Kieran Walsh helped Damien O ‘Donoghue set up Brian Tobin for a point to leave the score 0-4 to 0-2 in our favour after the first quarter. Charleville responded with two points (1 free) in the space of a minute to level proceedings once more. Paudie Lynch restored our lead in the 18th minute with a pointed free after Brian Tobin was impeded. Paudie again added another pointed free, Brian Tobin again being upended gathering a Will Twomey clearance. Charleville went on to dominate the remainder of the half in terms of scoring adding 0-5 to our single score, which came from Joe Cahill. Joe gathered possession from an Elton Pierce sideline and hit a sweet strike between the posts to leave the half time score 0-9 to 0-7 in Charleville’s favour.

The opening exchanges of the second half were tough with both teams giving it their all. Adrian Mannix got his first of four points in the 31st minute. Dion Cahill was excellent in the build up to this score. Paudie had the sides level in the 36th minute when he pointed a ‘65’. A sideline cut from Aidan Kenny was met in the air by Adrian Mannix and he ball appeared to be goal bound before the Charleville keeper made a fantastic save to concede the ‘65’. Charleville restored their two-point advantage when they raised white flags in the 36th and 37th minutes to lead 0-11 to 0-9. Joe Cahill and a Paudie Lynch free after a foul on Damien O ‘Donoghue tied up matters entering the final third of the game. Further points from Paudie and Adrian (2) opened a three-point lead as Kilworth began to dominate in all parts of the field. Charleville from a free and Brian Tobin exchanged points before a Paudie Lynch goal proved decisive. This was a top-quality goal. Tom Twomey back helping his defence passed to the excellent Mark O’Connor who sent a dangerous ball goal bound. Adrian Mannix won the ball and released Paudie with a well-timed hand pass and he made no mistake billowing the back of the net. From this juncture on there was only going to be one outcome. The outstanding Dion Cahill, who was just back from injury, landed a great point from the middle of the field to open a seven-point advantage. Adrian Mannix who tormented the full back line for the hour tagged on his fourth point of the game in the 60th minute. This was to be the final score of the game with Kilworth winning on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-12.

The final whistle was welcomed with scenes of great joy and emotion as the chairman of the North Cork Board Tom Crowley presented the cup to Kieran Walsh in the presence of James Hogan representing the Hibernian Hotel Mallow, sponsors of the competition.

The team, mentors and club officials were treated to a fine meal in the Corbett Court, and this was followed by a parage through the village led by the Thomas Kent Pipe Band. Club chairman Mick Twomey, team coach Pat Greehy and team captain Kieran Walsh then spoke in front of a huge crowd in the square. The club would like to congratulate sincerely the team and their mentors for a truly memorable win. To reach three finals in a row and to win back-to-back titles is a huge achievement. The hunger and desire shown was immense. Once they took the lead in the second period they never looked back and were on top in all positions on the field. Our defence was outstanding with Maurice McNamara, Will Twomey and Mark O’Connor playing excellently. Elton Pierce and Dion Cahill dominated midfield in the second half, and both got in on the scoring act. Up front our forwards looked dangerous all the way through. Joe Cahill and Brian Tobin contributed five points between them, while our inside line of Lynch, Mannix and O ‘Donoghue were majestic. One key passage of play featured superb defending from Damien McNamara in the 39th minute. Trailing by two points Damien blocked a certain goal and this transpired to be the turning point for Kilworth as they went on to dominate from here. To coach Pat and his selectors, Jack, Tony, John, Noel, team trainers Barry and Lar – well done. We are due to play the Muskerry winners in the first round of the county. This game is likely to go ahead the last weekend in September.
