ADULT TRAINING BACK FROM MONDAY

Our underage teams returned to non-contact training last week and this was a exciting and eagerly anticipated time for our younger members. Further good news followed last Thursday with the announcement from the Government in relation to the further relaxing of restrictions for society generally and for Gaelic Games. Broadly speaking  the following is what is proposed in the coming weeks; From next Monday May 10th outdoor training is permitted at adult level in pods of a maximum of 15 people however, games are not allowed for now. From June 7th (and subject to the Public Health situation at the time) – Club games will be permitted at all levels but must be played ‘’behind closed doors’.

It is the GAA’s intention to issue a more detailed communication to clubs and counties once further clarity on aspects of what was announced is received and further information is available. But for now this is hugely positive news and team players and management are eagerly looking forward to getting out onto the pitch and preparing for the upcoming leagues and championships.

REELING IN THE YEARS – NORTH CORK JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONS 1983 – TITLE NUMBER 6 (Continued)

This week we conclude our look back at the clubs North Cork junior hurling title win of 1983. Kilworth were back in  final following wins over Milford, Kildorrery and Fermoy, with Charleville the opposition in the decider.

Kilworth 4-09 Charleville 2-6 (Final; September 25th, 1983, Venue; Doneraile)

In ideal weather conditions and before a capacity attendance at Doneraile, Kilworth regained the North Cork J.H.C.

title after a lapse of three years when they had nine points to spare over Charleville in a tough rather than spectacular final. Kilworth who entered the game as firm favourites never played with the same fluency or urgency that they displayed in earlier rounds and it is more of an indication of Charleville’s shortcomings that Kilworth were never really in trouble. The losers were on top at the beginning of both halves but due to inaccuracy from both play and from frees they never pressed home their advantage. Kilworth led 2-5 to 1-3 at the interval. After the resumption Charleville came more into the game and midway through the half had the deficit reduced to a goal. For a spell it looked as if a grandstand finish was in the making, but with nine minutes remaining a Pat Greehy free was smartly latched onto by full forward Tom Shanahan to score the decisive goal with an unstoppable shot.

Charleville who played with the wind in the first half missed two close in frees before Kilworth opened the scoring in the fifth minute. A side-line cut from John Kenny was jumbled by the defence and Pat Shanahan hammered the loose ball to the net to give his side the perfect start. A second goal by Mickey Gowen and points by Pat Greehy and Pat Shanahan had the winners ahead 2-3 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes before Charleville goaled. Despite this green flag their attack made little progress against a sound Kilworth defence where the half backline were well in control while the Kilworth forward line with Pat Greehy at centre forward winning some good possession and Tom Shanahan and Mickey Gowen being very dangerous close to goal. Both sides added two points each before the interval to leave the half time score 2-5 to 1-3 in Kilworth’s favour.

After the resumption and following a series of changes Charleville stormed into the game. These changes seemed to have the desired effect as they completely dominated the opening ten minutes of the half and when a long range free went all the way to the net, to leave just two points between the sides it looked as if a hectic conclusion was in store. But Kilworth lifted the siege – Pat Greehy had a great point from the wing then set up Mickey Gowen for another to stretch the lead to four points before the third and decisive goal arrived when the ball came back off the crossbar and Tom Shanahan finished to the net. The big full forward was back again to hammer the final nail in the losers coffin when ten minutes from the finish; Pat Greehy took a close in free which went to Shanahan and from ten yards he made no mistake. To their credit Charleville tried to the end but at the final whistle Kilworth were deserving if not very convincing winners by nine points. Prominent for Kilworth were defenders Ger Sheedy, Johnny and Dave Hogan and Kevin McCarthy, at midfield John Kenny had a very good hour along with forwards Mickey Gowen, Pat Greehy and the Shanahan brothers.

After the game to the delight of the big Kilworth following the cup was presented to outstanding captain and keeper John Joe Shanahan by Neilus O’Neill, Vice Chairman of the North Cork Board. It was a day in which four sets of brothers took to the field for Kilworth (John Joe, Pat and Tom Shanahan, Kevin and Dave McCarthy, Johnny and Dave Hogan and Mossie and Pat McNamara) and this win saw Kilworth’s Johnny Hogan pick up his sixth North Cork Junior hurling medal some twenty two years after he had won his first in 1961.

Team and scorers: J.J. Shanahan, M McNamara, G Sheedy, J Hogan, K McCarthy (0-2), M Allen, D Hogan, J Kenny (0-2), P McNamara, D McCarthy, P Greehy (0-3), F McCormack, P Shanahan (1-1), T Shanahan (2-0), M Gowen (1-1). Sub used; N O’Brien for P. McNamara.

Later that evening back in the village the flames of a freshly lit bonfire leaped in the air to welcome home the team as they paraded behind the Castlelyons Pipe band. The team had once again brought honour to the village following their win over Charleville earlier in the day. A good crowd gathered to show their appreciation and were addressed by Club Chairman Sean O’Callaghan, Bill Hegarty on behalf of the selectors, team trainer/coach Con Cooney and team captain John Joe Shanahan. Chairman Sean O’Callaghan said we was very proud to be back on the platform on this happy occasion for the second time in four years with the Sean O’Brien Cup. He paid tribute to the players for their dedication and determination for the season under trainer Con Cooney and he hoped they could go on to better things. Speaking on behalf of fellow selectors (Fred Sheedy and Dick Lyng), Bill Hegarty complimented Con Cooney on bringing the team to this stage and hoped they would be back in a month or so with the County title. Con Cooney thanked the team for their commitment throughout their training programme and asked for a special effort with future games. ‘After all’, he said ‘’this is just the half-way stage that we are at now’’. Captain John Joe Shanahan thanked all those who supported the team up to now as well as those who were present to give them this great reception and welcome home.

The lads were now through to meet St Catherine’s in the first round of the county a week later. While Kilworth were firm favourites in the Avondhu final and hopes were high that Kilworth could replicate the team of 1967 and bring the county title back to the village, the general consensus was they would be outsiders the following Sunday against the East Cork title holders.

Kilworth 3-04 St Catherine’s 5-12 (County Quarter Final; October 2nd, 1983, Venue; Rathcormac)

On a wet and windy day in Rathcormac in adverse weather conditions our junior hurlers made their exit at the quarter final stage of the county championship when they had no answer to a fine second half performance by the East Cork champions. Kilworth won the toss played with the breeze and made a fantastic start as they led 1-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes, the green flag courtesy of Tom Shanahan. A second goal by Mickey Gowen saw Kilworth leading  by 2-3 to 1-3 at the interval. While they missed chances in this period they still looked to be in a reasonably good position at half time.  However, the second half was a complete transformation and unfortunately twenty second half minutes elapsed before Kilworth manage to get back on the scoresheet. By this stage St Catherine’s had built up a sizeable lead. The Imokilly side who looked uncertain in the opening half took over completely and three goals inside the first ten minutes changed the course of the game.  Kilworth struggled in most departments and despite a spirited finish which saw substitute Jerry O ‘Flynn score 1-1 in a three minute spell, these were the only additions to Kilworth’s halftime tally as St Catherine’s ran out comfortable winners at the final whistle. While down hearted to lose, there was no denying that the better side won on the day. Scorers; J O ‘Flynn (1-1), T Shanahan and M Gowen (1-0), P Shanahan (0-2), K McCarthy (0-1).
