THE WAITING GAME

At the time of writing it appears that Level 5 lockdown is set to continue until early March. This is likely to impact on the GAA’s master fixture plan for the year, with activity unlikely to restart in the current Covid-19 climate. The GAA are expected to provide an update on its plans for the season ahead at the end February. By then hopefully covid numbers will be down, schools may be back open and hopefully playing activity can commence when safe to do so. For now all club activities remain on hold and our GAA grounds remain closed. Thank you all for your cooperation here. We ask all members to continue to look after each other, follow public health guidelines and stay safe. Be aware of those who may feel a little isolated and look out for vulnerable friends and members of our community. REELING IN THE YEARSNORTH CORK JUNIOT A HURLING CHAMPIONS - 1991

This week we look back at  Kilworth’s North Cork Junior Hurling championship win of 1991, which began a great 5 year period for this group of players and the club. The nucleus of the team contested 4 finals between 1991 and 1995 winning in 1991, 1993 (beaten County finalists) and 1995 in a remarkable spell for the club with a group of very talented players that were very much in their prime.

It’s hard to believe its 30 years since our Junior hurler captured the clubs 7th North Cork title when defeating great rivals Castletownroche.  30 years on from the clubs first North Cork title at this grade in 1961, 6 years had elapsed since the clubs last appearance in the final of 1985, on that occasion having to settle for second best in a replayed defeat to Clyda Rovers, with the last win 2 years earlier in 1983 over Charleville. 1984 through to 1990 were tough times in the pre backdoor or second chance era but the club refused to throw in the towel, and the efforts made at juvenile level over that period were to stand us in good stead through the early and mid 90s.

Castletownroche had defeated Kilworth the previous year in 1990, and this game was seen as being very difficult to call with a huge crowd turning up in Ballyhooly to witness these two great rivals in action. In progressing to the decider Kilworth defeated Buttevant, Harbour Rovers and Liscarroll.

Kilworth 4-15 Buttevant 0-0 ( Round 1; June 8th, 1991, Venue; Kildorrery)

In the first round Kilworth had a facile win over Buttevant on June 8th. Kilworth who were playing against a strong wind in the first half chalked up a 1-10 to 0-0 lead at half time. This was mainly due to a dominant half backline and midfield. The game was over as a contest at this stage but on the resumption and with the wind behind them Kilworth added another 3-5 to run out winners 4-15 to 0-0. Team and scorers; J.J. Shanahan, E O’Donovan, B Sheedy, O Sheehan, J Keane, J Sheehan, J Kiersey 0-1, M Dunne 0-2, M O’Brien 0-1, M Gowen, N O’Brien 0-4, C Johnson, T Sheehan 0-1, P Greehy 3-2, S Carey 1-4.

This win set up a quarter tie with Harbour Rovers who defeated Fermoy in the previous round.

Kilworth 5-25 Harbour Rovers 1-1 (Qtr Final; June 30th, 1991, Venue; Ballygiblin)

From the throw in it was Kilworth who pressed and had an early point. Harbour Rovers had a goal in the third minute but from here to the end it was all one way traffic. Kilworth dominated the exchanges all over the field and ran out comfortable winners to set up a semi-final date with Liscarroll. Team and Scorers; J.J. Shanahan, E O’Donovan, B Sheedy, O Sheehan, J Kiersey, J Sheehan, J Keane 0-2, M Dunne 0-2, C Johnson 0-1, M Gowen 0-6, N O’Brien, M O’Brien 0-3, T Sheehan 1-1, P Greehy 3-6, S Carey 1-4.

Kilworth 3-9 Liscarroll 1-7 (Semi-final; July 26th, 1991, Venue; Castletownroche)

Played in ideal conditions, with the pitch in top class order before a sizeable crowd, once Kilworth got their noses in front after 5 minutes when a Sean Carey shot deceived the Liscarroll keeper, Kilworth were in control and maintained their position right throughout the game. Pat Greehy had a goal from 30 yards for Kilworth in the 9th minute and by the 14th minute Kilworth maintained a 2 goal lead. Liscarroll’s best period was to follow from now to the break and they converted a goal. John Joe Shanahan was to make 2 great saves in this period. Kilworth led 2-6 to 1-4 at halftime. Scores were scarce in the 3rd quarter with Kilworth leading 2-7 to 1-6 at the three quarter stage. Aidan Kenny introduced as a sub set up Sean Carey for Kilworth’s 3rd goal to increase the lead with Kilworth driving on for a 8 point winning margin. Kilworth had a very sound defence on the night with all 6 playing well. Midfielders and forwards did not operate as in previous games and they lacked their usual combined play. However, semi-finals are all about the result and this win secured the clubs first final appearance since 1985. Scorers; P Greehy 1-5, S Carey 2-1, M Dunne, C Johnson, A Kenny 0-1 each

Kilworth 1-16 Castletownroche 1-7 (Final ; August 18th, 1991, Venue; Ballyhooly)

Kilworth regained the North Cork Junior Hurling championship title after a lapse of eight years with victory over great rivals Castletownroche in an entertaining final played in ideal conditions on an excellent Ballyhooly pitch. The margin that eventually separated the sides failed to reflect the closeness of the exchanges for, while Kilworth led from the outset they were pushed to the limit on two occasions when they found themselves at the end of determined rallies. However, they always has the confidence to absorb pressure and an inspirational display from centre back and captain John Sheehan who was subsequently named ‘Man of the Match’ ably assisted by his wing men John Kiersey and Jack Keane, dashed Castletownroches hopes of revival. Kilworth were 5 points to the good before Castletownroche opened their account with a point in the 14th minute. Up to that Cyril Johnson was lording it at midfield for Kilworth, but now Castletownroche were braking even and came into the game and there was little to separate the sides in the run up to halftime. Aidan Kenny, still an U16 player was brought on and marked his introduction with a well taken point that left Kilworth leading 0-10 to 0-5 at the interval.

Points by Pat Greehy, Aidan Kenny and Noel O’Brien on the resumption stretched Kilworth’s lead, but Castletownroche lifted their game in response and were rewarded with a goal in the 41st minute. 2 further points brought them within three points of Kilworth. Again it was the half back lines influence that steadied the Kilworth side and the movement that sent Pat Greehy through for a crushing goal ten minutes from the end began back in the half back line. From here on it was plain sailing for Kilworth who had points from Mickey Gowen and another from Pat Greehy to put the golden seal on an impressive performance.

Here is the club match report carried in the Avondhu on Thursday August 22nd, 1991;

Congratulations and well done to our Junior A hurlers who on last Sunday evening at a very well prepared Ballyhooly venue and in brilliant sunshine they retrieved the North Cork Junior A Hurling title after a lapse of eight years. It was a victory worth waiting for and is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the players, officers, selectors and coaches, Tony McCarthy and Fred Sheedy.

Congratulations to John Sheehan who was chosen 'Man of the Match'. John had an excellent game, but breathing down his neck must have be the man on his left Jack Keane as also was Michael Gowen who had some great scores at vital times in the game. However, for us on Sunday all sixteen players were our stars, from the youngest to the oldest all gave of their best and the parish can be justly proud of their achievement.

After the game among scenes of jubilation and many tears of joy Mr Liam Ware, Chairman NCB presented the cup to our captain and 'Man of the Match', John Sheehan.

Team and scorers; JJ Shanahan, E Donovan, B Sheedy, 0 Sheehan, J Kiersey, J Sheehan 0-1, J Keane, C Johnson 0-1, M Dunne, M Gowen 0-5, N O'Brien 0-1, M O'Brien, T Sheehan, P Greehy 1-6, S Carey. Sub: A Kenny 0-2 for T Sheehan.

I would like to thank all involved in making last Sunday such a success. The Ballyhooly Club for excellent arrangements. The North Cork Board, Dr S O’Flynn for his medical assistance. To the members of the Thomas Kent Pipe Band to Sean O'Callaghan for supplying the transport. To all our sponsors and last but not least of you, our supporters who came out in style last Sunday, we hope you will continue to do so during the county campaign.

Victory Parade

A fine crowd assembled at the Square on Sunday night to welcome the team on their arrival with the cup. Our chairman, Mossie McNamara spoke, he congratulated all involved with the team.

He introduced John Sheehan, captain and all the members of the victorious team and substitutes, he then introduced team coaches, Mr Tony McCarthy and Mr Fred Sheedy. Mossy went on to pay a special tribute to the younger members of the team who he said had played a big part in this win. He then introduced our two new members Eamonn Donovan and Cyril Johnson who have both been a great asset to the Club. Captain John Sheehan, Tony McCarthy and Fred Sheedy also spoke.

Many messages of congratulations have been coming to the Club all week. One of these I must mention came all the way from New York from none other than a former coach/trainer of previous Kilworth winning teams, Mr Bill Hegarty.

Kilworth 0-5 Aghada 4-9 (County Semi Final; October 6th, 1991, Venue; Watergrasshill)

Having received a bye in the first round of the county championship Kilworth were paired with Aghada in the semi-final. On a day when Kilworth never played to their potential Aghada already winners of the county intermediate football title ran out convincing winners. Kilworth were in a promising half time position trailing 0-5 to 0-3 after playing against a strong wind in the first half. However, as so often happens the team with the advantage of the elements failed to make use of it, and Aghada effectively won the game in a five minute scoring spell which yielded two goals by the 40th minute. Team and scorers; JJ Shanahan, E Donovan, Brian Sheedy, O Sheehan, J Kiersey, J Sheehan, J Keane 0-1, M Dunne, C Johnson, M Gowen, N O’Brien, M O’Brien, T Sheehan, P Greehy 0-3, S Carey, Subs used W Hegarty & A Kenny 0-1.

While disappointed to lose on the county trail winning back the domestic title after a mini famine in Kilworth terms was a huge achievement and will live long in the memory.
