FOOTBALLERS BOOK THEIR PLACE IN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

JAFC Semi-final Result – Kilworth 1-11, Fermoy 0-08 on Saturday August 10th 2019.

In slippery, wet conditions at Mitchelstown last Saturday, it was Kilworth who came out on top and secured their place in this year’s junior ‘A’ football championship final after they defeated neighbours Fermoy on the score line of 1-11 to 0-08. The opening half was tit-for-tat with both sides kicking over some good points in the early stages and with just five minutes to go until the break, the sides were level at 0-05 a-piece. Kilworth did manage to put some day light between the sides before half time with three points from play through Eoin Carey, Kieran Lane and Noel McNamara and at the break we had a three point cushion, 0-08 to 0-05.

The second half resumed and eight minutes went by before we had the first score after the break with Fermoy pointing from play to reduce the gap to two points, 0-8 to 0-6. Eoin Carey cancelled it out with a well taken free a minute later. Fermoy were awarded a penalty mid-way through the second half which would have levelled proceedings but thankfully our goalkeeper Jamie Sheehan stepped up to make a great save and keep Kilworth in front. Our boys extended our lead to four points by the 48th minute, with Paddy Moakely popping over a point from play and Eoin Carey adding to his tally with another pointed free. This put us 0-11 to 0-7 clear. The game was put beyond doubt with five minutes to go when Captain Will Condon found the back of the Fermoy net for the game’s only goal and this gave us a seven point lead heading into the dying minutes of the game. Fermoy would tag on one more point in injury time but that was to be the end of their journey as it was Kilworth who ran out deserving winners, booking their place in this year’s final against either Kilshannig, Ballyhooley or Kilavullen.

On behalf of the club we would like to congratulate the management of Pat O’Brien, Brian Tobin, Mark O’Connor and Maurice McNamara along with the panel of players on a great win last Saturday night in difficult conditions and on a great championship campaign to date. It’s great to be back in the final and let’s hope that 2019 is finally the year we get over that winning line and go all the way! Thank you to everyone who came out and braved the elements to support the boys last weekend, we hope to see you all again at the final in a few weeks’ time! Kilworth Abú!
