ATTENTION TURNS TO 2018 FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL AGM 2017-12-06 10:58:00

The club held our AGM last Friday night in the club rooms in front of a small attendance which was disappointing to see but we fired ahead and it didn’t stop us from holding yet another successful AGM. Chairman John Sheehan opened proceedings by welcoming all those present and like always, we started our meeting with a prayer to remember all those we have lost over the past year, especially the loss of incredible club supporter May McCormack.

REPORTS

Following our opening prayer, it was time for outgoing Secretary Ber Wheeler to give us her report on the club’s activities on and off the field for 2017. Ber provided us with a wonderful and comprehensive account of the club’s activities over the past year with one of the highlights being our highly successful ‘Night at the Dogs’ which we held in September at Curraheen Park in aid of our future development plans. A tremendous amount of work and effort went into organising this event in the weeks and months leading up to it and Ber thanked all those involved in making it a success and she also thanked our sponsors on the night for their incredible support. The players held another very successful ‘5km Fun Run/Walk’ in December 2016 and we thank them for their continued hard work to make the event an annual occurrence and work to make this year’s event even bigger and better is already in full swing. We also held a very successful Cavanagh’s of Fermoy sponsored Golf Classic at Fermoy Golf Club in May with almost 40 teams taking part. Ber thanked all those who helped out on the day and also thanked all those who collected sponsorship, raffle prizes, organised teams etc. in the lead up to the event. Our weekly club lotto continues to be a very important source of income to the club and it continues to be a great success with the club recording one winner since last year’s AGM. This year marked 50 years since our heroes of 1967 won the club’s first ever Junior County Hurling Championship. We were delighted to honour this team in the Grand Hotel a few weeks ago where each team member received a framed photograph of the team photo that was taken 50 years ago with the North Cork and Cork County trophies. Ber thanked the committee who took charge of organising this event. It ran like clockwork and it received wonderful feedback from those in attendance on the night.

On the field, it was a disappointing year considering the high hopes we had this time last year. We recorded a fantastic win over Fermoy in the opening round of this year’s Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship, our first round one win since 2012. But it proved to be our only win of this year’s championship as we suffered disappointing defeats at the hands of Cloyne in a wet and windy Ballynoe and following this we were heavily defeated by a strong Fr. O’ Neills side in Lisgoold on the 16th July in a game where we were outscored by 3-14 to 0-08. We reached the North Cork U21AHC Final for the third year in a row this year but we failed to come out of the blocks in Araglin and after such a promising campaign, we suffered defeat to Fermoy on the score line of 0-14 to 0-12. On Saturday September 9th, we contested our third ever North Cork Junior ‘A’ Football Championship Final where we faced Buttevant. The opposition proved too strong on the day but the players and management deserve great credit for the strong campaign they had defeating Mitchelstown, Glanworth and Kilavullen to reach the final. Despite our loss in the final, we still contested the first round of the county championship but here we were beaten by Kilmacabea who were the better team on the day. Ber thanked all of the coaches, managers and selectors who took positions in 2017. They each put in a great effort and they never failed to give it their absolute all. Ber also thanked our physios and medical staff who were on hand for every game and training session throughout the year. Ber finally congratulated newly appointed Juvenile Club Chairman and club referee Aidan Hyland on another great year and there is no doubt he will go on to get many more and even bigger games in 2018.

Despite the disappointment we experienced in 2017, we hope that 2018 will be a much stronger year on the playing field for Kilworth. Attention has already turned to next year with managements being put in place as we speak. As a club we look forward to whatever lies ahead and we would like to wish all of our players and the coaches, managers and selectors who take positions in 2018 the very best of luck in both league and championship games.

Ber closed her report by thanking her fellow committee members for the help and support they provided to her throughout the year. This brought an end to Ber’s year as Secretary and she did an outstanding job for the club. Ber took the job last year at the last minute when we were struggling to get someone to take the position. She took the position and made it her own and she was a pleasure to work with. The committee thanked her for taking the job and for all she has done over the past twelve months. Ber, we look forward to working with you in some capacity again over the coming year.

Mossie McNamara then gave his treasurers report for the past year and it is great to see the club in a healthy position heading into 2018. We have made great strides off the pitch in preparation for our future development, but this is only the start. The Dog Night was a fantastic success but focus must now turn to what our next fundraiser will be. The new club house will not build itself and we rely on the continued support of our sponsors and supporters to ensure we raise the funds we need to build our brand new state-of-the-art club house. Remember, we are doing this for the future of the club. It will benefit the juveniles coming through in years to come. This is for them. We would like to thank Mossie for all his work in ensuring the club is in a healthy financial state and for keeping us on track year after year.

Next on the agenda was Chairman John Sheehan’s report. John reiterated everything Ber said in her report thanking the managements of 2017 along with all those who helped with our various fundraisers etc. He made a special mention to May McCormack who we sadly lost in 2017. She was a wonderful supporter to the club down through the years, attending matches and she was a brilliant lotto supporter as well. She is greatly missed by all who knew her. This was John’s first year at the helm and he did a great job at the top overseeing matches, fundraisers, etc. We look forward to working with John as Chairman again in 2018.
