A NIGHT TO REMEMBER FOR OUR 1967 HEROES 2017-11-27 15:16:00

Last Saturday night saw Kilworth GAA Club honour our heroes of 1967, the first team to bring a Junior County Hurling Title back to the club 50 years ago this year. They are a team that will forever remain in the history books for their incredible achievement and we were delighted to celebrate their success last Saturday night with the players and their family and friends. The event took place at the Grand Hotel Fermoy and we would like to thank the hotel and their staff for providing a beautiful meal which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The team made a fantastic entrance, led by a piper from the Thomas Kent Pipe Band and 1967 team captain John Hogan who proudly held the same cup which Kilworth won 50 years ago. We would like to thank this year’s champions St. Catherine’s for providing us with the cup for the night. Liam Kenny was MC for the occasion and as always he did a fantastic job and we would like to thank him for taking part in the event. We would also like to thank Club Chairman John Sheehan for saying a lovely few words on behalf of the club and welcoming everyone there to celebrate the momentous occasion. John Hogan spoke on behalf of the team, guest Tim O’Mahony spoke on behalf of Cloughduv, the opposition on that famous day in 1967 and Tracey Kennedy and Barry Aherne both spoke on behalf of the Cork County Board and North Cork Board respectively.

We were delighted to present each player with a beautiful framed photograph of the team picture which was taken in 1967 with the North Cork and Junior County trophies. The club would like to sincerely thank Mike Walsh for framing the photographs and we would also like to thank Sheila Greehy for kindly joining us and taking some beautiful photos on the night which will be cherished by all. As Club President, Bill Hegarty kindly made the presentations to each of the 1967 players.

The club would like to thank our special guests on the night, Canon Leahy, Kilworth GAA Club President Bill Hegarty, newly elected Cork GAA Chairperson Tracey Kennedy, North Cork Board Chairperson Barry Aherne and Cloughduv player Tim O’Mahony who was on the opposing team all those years ago. We were thrilled you could all be there to celebrate this special occasion with us. The night ended with a sing-song, plenty of banter and reminiscing on the glory days for these fantastic players.

And of course those we have sadly lost from this team were fondly remembered and it was great to have their family members there to represent them and to receive a photograph on their behalf. Those we have lost may be gone but they will never be forgotten.

And finally the club would like to sincerely thank the committee who organised this event and they include Shane Tobin, Patsy O’Mahony, Mossie McNamara, Alan Kenny and Mike Walsh. All of your hard work and commitment to ensuring the night went off without a hitch was greatly appreciated by everyone and it didn’t go unnoticed on the night. Thank you to everyone who helped to make last Saturday such a memorable occasion and we look forward to another night like this in the years ahead!
