NEWTOWN EDGE CLOSE ENCOUNTER

Kilworth 0-15 Newtownshandrum 0-16

A strong finish saw Newtown progress to play Ballyhea in the semi-final of the McAuliffe Hurley’s JB2 Hurling championship following a tight contest played in Kildorrery last Friday night.

Leading 0-14 to 0-12 after twenty two second half minutes Kilworth looked in a good position to take the spoils. However, a break in play when on top appeared to break our momentum. On the restart Newtown landed four points in a row to take a two point lead by the 60th minutes. Into injury time a Kilworth penalty claim went unnoticed, the consolation ‘65’ that resulted was converted to reduce the minimum to a point. One more play ensued however the equalizing score we chased failed to materialise and a disappointing one point defeat was the outcome as the final whistle sounded.

The sides were deadlocked 0-3 a piece at the first water break. Dan Regan from a side-line set up Paddy Moakley for our opening score. Newtown led 0-1 to 0-2 after five minutes. We had a couple of wides from play before Kieran Lane firstly set up Mike Sheehan for a point and followed it up with another pass for Mike Wade to point and we led 0-3 to 0-2 after nine minutes. Great defending from Mark O’Connor scuppered a Newtown goal chance with the resulting ‘65’ providing an equalizing point and the sides were level 0-3 each after ten minutes and this in fact remained the score at the end of a low scoring opening quarter.

Newtown took the lead on the re start before Sean Keane equalised after a great catch from a puck out, turning quickly to slot the ball between the posts. Newtown and Mike Sheehan who pointed from a free after he himself was fouled on route to goal after catching a Mike O’Callaghan side-line exchanged white flags to leave it 0-5 each after twenty minutes. In between these two scores we lost Shane O’Brien to injury. Shane was a big loss given Newtown were strong in the middle of the field. We were unlucky not to goal in the 23rd minute following a great move involving Kieran Lane, Leo Coffey and Mike Sheehan with Mike’s shot rebounded off the post. The forwards worked hard to keep the ball in the danger zone and Mike had a second attempt but unfortunately hit the side netting. Newtown lifted it again landing two points one from a side-line to lead 0-7 to 0-5 after twenty five first half minutes. Good work from Kieran Lane and Mark O’Connor set up Mike Sheehan who had come deep for our sixth point with Newtown having the final say of the half to leave it 0-6 to 0-8 in their favour.

Newtown opened the second half scoring from a free to extend their lead to three points. Mike Sheehan responded with two pointed frees, Mike Wade now operating on the ‘40’ upended for the first with Jason McCarthy fouled on the run for the second. Newtown made it 0-8 to 0-10 with forty minutes on the clock. Kilworth went on to dominate the remainder of the quarter added three points to lead 0-11 to 0-10 at the three quarter mark. The first of the three resulted from a Mike Sheehan ‘65’ after a Brian Casey shot was deflected out by the Newtown keeper. Mike Wade tied up the scores following great work from Paddy Moakley and Brian Casey. We took the lead from a great individual score from Mike Sheehan who on the run struck off the hurley and we lead 0-11 to 0-10 as the second water break approached. The 4th quarter opened with Newtown tying up proceedings before Paddy Moakley landed a massive point, striking off his left close to the right hand side-line to restore our advantage. Two Sean Keane points either side of a Newtown over from a side-line cut left it 0-14 to 0-12 after 52 minutes.

Following a break in play Newtown went on to dominate the next six minutes landing four points (1 free) between the 54th and 60th minutes to turn a two point deficit into a two point advantage with time now at the discretion of the referee. The lads continued to fight and a run from Paddy Moakley towards goal resulted in a ‘65’ when a penalty looked on the cards. Mike Sheehan pointed and the referee allowed another play, however we were unable to get back up the field and draw level with Newtown holding out for a one point victory.

This was a disappointing defeat given there was a big effort put in by the panel of players and team management over the last few months. We had 32 players togged out on the night and with a bit of luck could have progressed but it was Newtown’s night in the end. Thanks to team manager Kieran Sheedy, Noel O’Brien and Austin O’Hara for their work and time with the team again this year.

VOTE OF SYMPATHY

The club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the McAuliffe family and Glanworth GAA club on the sad passing of Club President Owenie McAuliffe. Owenie, one of life’s true gentlemen made a huge contribution to the GAA and will be a huge loss to his club. He represented Glanworth, Avondhu and Cork with distinction as both a player and team mentor being involved in team management and coaching with club, division and county.  Owenie had a big Kilworth connection playing with Kilworth in the early 1960s and was half back on the 1961 team that won the clubs historic first North Cork junior hurling title. The team went on to contest the county final going down to Cloyne following a replay. Back in 2011 the club held a function to honour and remember the 50th anniversary of that historic achievement for the club. Owenie was present on the night and was in typical great form, full of chat and stories reminiscing on great GAA memories from that and more recent era’s.  Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
