Kilworth GAA Notes 15th July 2021 2021-07-16 12:20:00

CONGRATULATIONS EOIN

Huge congratulations to Eoin Carey and the Cork U20 hurlers as they ended a 16 year wait for an All Ireland title for the county on Saturday night. Eoin entered the fray in the 40th minute and played his part in a great win. Getting on a good bit of ball Eoin was involved in the early stages of the build up to Corks second goal, which proved the crucial score in the final outcome of the game. It was a proud occasion for Eoin, the Carey and Gowen families and all involved with Kilworth GAA. Well done Eoin on a fantastic achievement.

CHARLEVILLE UP IT SECOND HALF

Kilworth 1-21 Charleville 3-26

Last year’s Senior A county champions were the visitors to Kilworth last Sunday afternoon for this Red FM Hurling league 3B Round 3 game and while they ran out comfortable winners in the end, this was a much closer game for long periods than the score suggests. A tight affair throughout the first half saw the sides level 1-11 each at half time. The sides remained deadlocked 1-15 a piece by the 37th minute but a scoring spree from Charleville saw them open up a six point lead by the second water break 2-20 to 1-17. They continued in this rich vein of  scoring form in the final quarter outscoring Kilworth 1-6 to 0-4 to leave it 3-26 to 1-21 at the final whistle.

Kilworth started well and led 0-8 to 0-5 at the first water break after 17th minute. The lead was pushed out  0-10 to 0-5 on the resumption. Leading by 0-11 to 0-7 Charleville hit the first of their three goals in the 27th minute and tied the game up in the following play before taking a two point lead 0-11 to 1-10 after 30 minutes. Liam Whelan responded with a great goal following a solo run through the middle to restore a one point advantage with Charleville finished the scoring to tie it up 1-11 each at the interval.

On the turnover Charleville opened up a two point lead on two occasions 1-13 to 1-11, and 1-15 to 1-13, with Kilworth equalising both times with the score reading 1-15 apiece after 37 minutes. This was as good as it would get as Charleville upped the tempo to lead 1-17 to 1-15 by the 42nd minute. A goal and a point followed within a minutes and suddenly there was six points between the sides 2-18 to 1-15. Both teams exchanged two white flags as Charleville led 2-20 to 1-17 at the three quarter mark. The game fizzled out in the last quarter with Charleville maintaining their dominance adding their third goal in the 52nd minute, and they remained in control to the full time whistle.

BUTTEVANT TAKE THE POINTS

Kilworth 0-14 Buttevant 1-19

Our junior hurlers took on Buttevant in Round 2 of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division 2 Hurling league  played in Kilworth last Friday night. The Kilworth team featured six changes from the starting fifteen that drew with Mallow in their opening game a month earlier. From the throw in Buttevant were the sharper of the sides and were 0-5 to 0-2 in front at the first water break. Kilworth had their best spell of the game in the second quarter trailing 0-9 to 0-5 after 27 minutes. Just as Kilworth were finding their feet and working their way into the contest Buttevant goaled and extended their lead 1-10 to 0-6 by halftime. Our opponents were able to keep us at arm’s length in the second half holding a six point lead 1-13 to 0-10 at the second water break, and extending their advantage in the final quarter to win 1-19 to 0-14.

While Buttevant were the better side on the night they are operating at a higher championship level and it was the lads first game in four weeks. It will definitely stand to the panel and was good preparation ahead of their championship encounter with Newtown tomorrow night.

K Heggtveit, J McCarthy (Elm Place), J Horgan, M Gowen, T Hynes, M O’Connor, J Tobin Allen, S Beecher, D O’Regan, S Keane, J Moakley, B Casey, P Moakley, M Wade (0-4), M Sheehan (0-10, 5fs, 1 ‘65’). Subs used; Cathal Donnellan for J Moakley, T Dunne for J Horgan.
