SHARE OF SPOILS IN OPENING LEAGUE ENCOUNTER

Kilworth 4-10 Mallow 1-19

Our junior hurlers earned a well-deserved draw against Mallow in the opening round of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division Two hurling league played in Kilworth last Friday evening. This proved a high scoring, open and entertaining game on a beautiful sunny yet breezy June evening. Fielding a team with a nice blend of youth and experience, two goals in quick succession in the third quarter after falling four points behind, proved crucial in the overall outcome. A fourth goal with time almost up put us two points to the good and it looked as if we had just edged it, but Mallow finished strong with the last two white flags of the night before the final whistle sounded. In a game that ebbed and flowed, Kilworth were up 1-6 to 1-5 at the first water break, trailed 1-7 to 1-8 at half time,  restored the lead 3-9 to 1-14 at the second water break, with the final outcome all square, 4-10 to 1-19.

Mallow opened the scoring with a point and doubled their advantage before Kilworth playing with the aid of a strong wind found their feet with four points on the trot. Paddy Moakley opened Kilworth’s account with a well taken point from the left wing. Mike O’Callaghan followed with a long distance effort, Mikey Wade from a free after he himself was upended and a second from Paddy Moakley made  it 0-4 to 0-2 after ten minutes. The following minute saw the game’s first goal, and it went the way of Mallow, keeper Shane O’ Brien who had an excellent game, went full length to make a great point blank save but was unlucky when the rebound broke to the Mallow corner forward who finished to the net. Kilworth’s response was immediate retaking the lead 1-4 to 1-2 with Brian Casey getting the first of his two goals, following a great individual run and finish in the twelfth minute.  Ryan Jordan on his debut was having a fine half pointed when in a probing, advanced position to push the lead to three points. Mallow and Dan Regan following good play again from Jordan exchanged points before Mallow hit back with two pointed frees to leave it 1-6 to 1-5 at the first water break. A free from Mikey Wade following a foul on the industrious Jason McCarthy added to Kilworth’s tally. However it was Mallow who finished the half stronger piling pressure on our defence and landing the last three points of the half all from frees to leave Mallow up a point 1-8 to 1-7 at the interval.

Mikey Wade from a free following a foul on James Moakley opened the second half scoring. Mallow replied with two quick fire points before Wade now operating on the forty landed an excellent point following a great run up the left and pass from Paddy Moakley to trail 1-10 to 1-9 . Mallow with the wind at their backs pressed hard adding three points without reply to lead 1-13 to 1-9 by the 40th minute. Just as the tied appeared to be turning in their favour, Kilworth raised two green flags in quick succession to go from four behind to two up. Brian Casey was involved in both goals, scoring the first following good build up work from Jason McCarthy, and while dispossessed on a run towards goal shortly after, the ball broke to Dan O’Regan who coolly placed his shot beyond the Mallow keeper. Mallow had the final say of the third quarter with a pointed free to leave it 3-9 to 1-14 at the second water break. Mallow equalised on the resumption before Mikey Wade restored Kilworth’s lead with a point from play with five minutes remaining. Mallow responded with two points to retake the lead 1-17 to 3-10. Back up the field Kilworth came with Paddy Moakley on a solo run to find Dan O’Regan with a pin point pass. Dan made no mistake raising his second green flag with an unstoppable shot billowing the back of the net and Kilworth led by two points with time now at the discretion of the referee. As with the first half Mallow finished strong scoring the last two points of the game to level matters once more (4-10 to 1-19) with the final whistle sounding shortly after.

This was a satisfactory first outing, with great effort and attitude on display. Twenty players were used on the night with a few more in reserve and also a few others unavailable due to exams and other commitments.

VOTES OF SYMPATHY

The club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the Barry family, Kilworth, the Pierce family, Glanworth, the Delaney family, Fermoy and the Lynch family, Knocknaheeny, Cork following their recent bereavements.

Tommy Lynch RIP

A great character, Tommy was caretaker and groundman at Pairc Ui Chaoimh for over four decades and at Pairc Ui Rinn since it opened in the early 1990’s. The club have played a good number of games in both venues over his tenure, predominantly since 2005 and in Pairc Ui Rinn, Tommy was always the first man you would meet when entering the door to the dressing room area making sure everything was ready and in order. Always very helpful and accommodating Cork GAA has lost a great servant.
