REELING IN THE YEARS – NORTH CORK JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONS – 1995 (Title number 9)

This week we continue our look at the North Cork Junior hurling win of 1995. Our current club chairman Liam Kenny was club PRO in 1995, and thanks to his great reporting of games at the time and also to the Avondhu archive we can re live this great milestone in our proud club’s history. Having overcome Ballyhea in round 1 and Kilshannig in the quarter final, near neighbours Fermoy were our semi-final opponents.

Kilworth 3-13 Fermoy 0-15 (Semi-Final; August 27th, 1995, Venue; Castletownroche)

Our junior hurlers gained revenge for the previous year’s final defeat when they had seven points to spare over Fermoy at Castletownroche. The final score-line flattered Kilworth who were chasing the game until the 56th minute when they drew level and from there two goals and two points in three minute left Fermoy wondering what hit them and they had no response.

Fermoy playing with a strong breeze at their backs were the quickest to settle and were 0-4 to 0-0 to the good by the 11th minute. Kilworth received a body blow in the 12th minute when William Hegarty received a serious leg injury. The game was held up for approximately 20 minutes as the unlucky Hegarty received medical attention and was stretchered from the field. On the resumption the sight of their teammate been carried from the field seemed to give Kilworth an added impetus and they gradually fought their way back into contention. The game restarted with Will O ’Donoghue replacing Hegarty. Pat Shanahan opened Kilworth’s account with a point after thirteen minutes. Fermoy replied with a point from a side-line on the quarter hour to leave the score 0-1 to 0-5 in favour of Fermoy. Sean Carey had our second point from a free in the 18th minute after Pat Shanahan was fouled. John Joe Shanahan kept Kilworth in touch in the 20th minute with a fine save after a deflected shot came at him and after going one way had to readjust to scoop the ball out for a ‘65’. Fermoy duly converted this to go 0-6 to 0-2 into the lead. Will O ‘Donoghue had a point in the 22nd minute when he collected a break, soloed crossfield and despatched the ball over the bar.

Fermoy were well on top at this stage and scored three points without reply to leave six points between the teams. Mikey Gowen scored a fine point after a solo run in the 28th minute. Kilworth then received a major boost, when a long Aidan Kenny free was finished to the net splendidly by Colm Carey who met the ball in flight. This goal left Kilworth who to be fair were not at the races in the first half within two points of Fermoy. The town side had the last say of the half with a pointed free to leave it 1-4 to 0-10 at the interval.

Fermoy resumed as they had started the game and had two points in the first five minutes to stretch their lead. Aidan Kenny converted a long range free in the 36th minute to put four points between the teams. The 41st minute saw the games turning point, when a brilliant double save from John Joe kept Kilworth alive. Firstly, he parried a thunderbolt which came straight at him and then had to go full length to turn a shot from the re bound around the post. An Aidan Kenny free left a goal between the sides at the three-quarter stage, but Fermoy responded with a pointed free in the 46th minute. Kenny again pointed a long range free after Jack Keane was fouled coming out with a well intercepted ball. John Sheehan who had come into the game pointed in the 48th minute with the score now reading 1-8 to 0-13, before a Fermoy point in the 49th minute restored their three-point advantage. Chopper was fouled with ten minutes remaining and Sean Carey pointed to cut the lead to two once again. Aidan Kenny whose long range frees were very important in Kilworth’s win pointed again in the 55th minute to leave the minimum between the teams. Kilworth drew level in the 56th minute with Sean Carey pointing a close range free. Kilworth were hurling well at this stage and on the ascendency. The vital score that both teams craved arrived in the 58th minute, a long ball into the square broke down from Chopper and Sean Carey reached first to smash a low ground shot past the Fermoy keeper to leave the Kilworth contingent ecstatic. A long range free was just wide, and from the resulting puckout Will O ‘Donoghue found Noel O’Brien who billowed the net. A stunned Fermoy landed a point in injury time to reduce the deficit to two goals, before Mickey O’Brien who hurled very well when introduced scored a fabulous point well into added time to leave it 3-13 to 0-15. The final whistle sounded with a huge cheer from the big Kilworth crowd. Last year’s defeat was atoned for with a third final in a row to look forward to. Team and scorers; J.J. Shanahan, B Sheedy, S Linehan, J Keane, A Kenny (0-4  (3 frees, 1 ‘65’), O Sheehan, M Dunne, J Sheehan 0-1, W Twomey, M Gowen 0-1, N O’Brien 1-1, C Carey 1-0, W Hegarty, P Shanahan 0-1, S Carey 1-3 (3 frees). Subs used W O ‘Donoghue 0-1 for W Hegarty (injured), M O’Brien 0-1 for O Sheehan (injured)

Kilworth 3-14 Charleville 1-9 (Final; September 10th, 1995, Venue; Killavullen)

Kilworth regained the junior hurling crown with an easier than expected victory over Charleville at a beautifully prepared Killavullen venue. Wearing green jerseys due to a clash of colours there was little indication of a runaway victory at half-time when Charleville led 1-6 to 1-5, but Kilworth took the initiative on the resumption and scoring six points without reply in the third quarter and gradually gained the upper hand.

Charleville opened the scoring with a point in the first minute. Kilworth squandered some good early chances with four wides before our first score a point by man of the match Sean Carey, who doubled delightfully on a breaking ball over the bar. Aidan Kenny, who must have run Carey close for the award, had a free over from the halfway line after seven minutes. Charleville responded in the ninth minute to square it up 0-2 each. Sean Carey and Charleville exchanged points in the tenth and twelfth minutes, before Kilworth received a major boost two minutes later. A long range free from Aidan Kenny broke around the square and the cunning Chopper reacted first to finish the ball to the net from close range. Will O Donoghue had a point in the 18th minute and Colm Carey pointed in the 22nd minute. Kilworth looked in control at this stage leading 1-5 to 0-3, but they seemed to relax and Charleville took full advantage scoring a  brilliant goal in the 23rd minute and points in the 24th, 26th and 30th minutes to lead by a point at the interval 1-6 to 1-5 and Kilworth looked a worried team. It took a stern talking to at halftime to ensure Kilworth took to the field in the correct frame of mind for the second period. The half time chat seemed to do the trick as Kilworth came out for the second half with all guns blazing and took the lead 1-7 to 1-6 after two frees from Sean Carey in the 31st and 33rd minutes. Mikey Gowen scored a fine point gathering possession from an Aidan Kenny clearance in the 37th minute. The post denied ‘Chopper’ a minute later. John Sheehan pointed in the 39th minute with Mickey Gowen and Sean Carey both on the mark again by the three-quarter stage.  A Chopper points either side of two Charleville white flags left the score 1-12 to 1-8 after 50th minutes and they were still in touch. Kilworth received a lucky break two minutes later when a long ball from Will O ‘Donoghue deceived the luckless Charleville keeper and went all the way to the net for a huge boost for Kilworth, extending the lead to seven points. Charleville had their last score of the game, a point in the 53rd minute. The next score killed off the Charleville challenge when a good ground ball from Colm Carey who played well for the whole hour was collected by his brother Sean who made no mistake and found the net. Charleville had no response and Kilworth tagged on two more points fittingly from their best two servants over the hour, an Aidan Kenny free in the 57th minute and a point from a penalty in the 58th minute from the games top scorer Sean Carey to leave the full time score 3-14 to 1-9. The half backline of Kenny, Ollie Sheehan and Will Twomey performed very effectively, while Pat ‘Chopper’ Shanahan was a towering figure at full-forward. After the final whistle, the cup which was on its way to Kilworth for the ninth time, and third time in five years was presented by board chairman, John Dillon to winning captain Noel O’Brien amid great excitement. Team and scorers: J.J. Shanahan, B Sheedy, S Linehan, S Keane, A Kenny 0-2 (0-2 frees), O Sheehan, W Twomey, J Sheehan 0-1, M Dunne, M Gowen 0-2, N O’Brien. C Carey 0-1, W O ‘Donoghue 1-1, P Shanahan 1-1, S Carey 1-6 (0-3 frees). Subs used, M O’Brien for J Keane

Kilworth 1-8 Killeagh 1-11(County Semi-Final; October 1st, 1995, Venue; Ballynoe)

Hopes of reaching a second county final in three years were dashed at Ballynoe, when Killeagh went on a late scoring spree to defeat us at the semi-final stage at Ballynoe. The silken skills of classy Cork minor Joe Deane swung the game Killeagh’s way, his 1-6 sinking a gallant Kilworth effort. But for the sharpness of Deane it might well have been our day, but to be fair Kilworth had too many players performing below par to advance. Killeagh looked the better side in the first half but they could never pull away from a tough tackling Kilworth side who were in control in defence with full back Simon Linehan doing a fine job on Deane, and Pat Shanahan hitting the net just on the interval break.

It was 0-2 apiece after ten minutes, John Sheehan and Sean Carey pointing for Kilworth. Had Killeagh taken their chances they would have been well in front, Killeagh led 0-4 to 0-2 after the first quarter and then it was Kilworth’s turn to miss some good scoring opportunities. Killeagh were heading for a 0-6 to o-3 interval lead until Chopper struck for that opportunist goal after taking Sean Careys high ball that held up in the wind. This goal buoyed Kilworth and they came out with all guns blazing in the second half taking the lead with points from a Sean Carey free and an Aidan Kenny ‘65’. Kilworth were still two points to the good until the 44th minute when Deane struck for a vital goal. A few more points from Deane much more at ease in the corner settled the issue and the county dream was over for another year. Kilworth were best served on the day by Simon Linehan, Jack Keane, Aidan Kenny, Will Twomey and Pat Shanahan.

Team and scorers; J.J Shanahan; B Sheedy, S Linehan, J Keane, A Kenny 0-1 (‘65’) O Sheehan, W Twomey, J Sheehan 0-1, M Dunne, M Gowen, N O’Brien, C Carey 0-1, W O ‘Donoghue, P Shanahan 1-2, S Carey 0-2 (0-1 free). Subs used: E Pierce 0-1 for C Carey, J Kiersey for M Dunne.
