JBHC Kilworth v Kildorrery 21-08-2020 2020-08-28 16:54:00

Kilworth excel in second half to overcome Kildorrery in Semi Final!

JBHC R1- Kilworth 2.18 Kildorrery 1.11

An excellent second half display from our men in red and white saw Kilworth comfortably overcome Kildorrery last Friday evening to book their place in the North Cork Final of the Junior B Hurling Championship. Every player from 1-15, also including the five substitutes Cormac Donnellan , Jason McCarthy, Joey Cahill, Timmy Dunne and Cathal Donnellan made their presence, outscoring their opponents 1-9 to 3 points after the break.  It is fantastic to note that all of Kilworth’s forwards got their names on the scoreboard in the opening half.

Leo Coffey, who had a great game at wing forward, got the opening score of the match. James Moakley and Mikey Wade got on the scoring sheet next to give Kilworth 3 points without response from Kildorrery in the opening five minutes. Kildorrery got themselves on the scoreboard with a free in the 5th minute. Leo Coffee responded seeing him get his second point of the match. Points from full forward line Michael Sheehan and Ned O’ Brien saw Kilworth lead by 3 points at the first quarter. Hard work and determination from Kilworth  posed problems for Kildorrery making it difficult for them to score from play.  Points from Brian Casey and James Moakley for Kilworth and 2 more points for Kildorrery gave Kilworth a margin of 3 points with a scoreline of 0.8 to 0.5 in the 27th minute. However this lead was then overturned by the opposing side which saw the ball in the back of the Kilworth net making the game all square at this stage. The Kilworth men lost their momentum for a short while, however, despite this Michael Sheehan who was on fire in the corner for Kilworth struck a brilliant goal after a good run towards the Kildorrery goal, giving Kilworth a two point lead as the half time whistle blew.  Half time score 1-9 to 1-7. Kilworths goal was their get out jail card nearing the end of this first half, giving them a good position heading into the second half also playing with the wind.

Kilworths danger man on the night Michael Sheehan got Kilworth quickly on the scoreboard scoring straight from the throw in ball. Half time substitute Cormac Donnellan ensured to get himself on the scoring sheet with a point from out by the sideline. Both of these points came in less than a minute as the second half resumed.  The game saw points from both sides in the opening 13 minutes of the second half. Succeeding this Kilworth took over, dominated the game, making it their own. Substitute Jason McCarthy displayed great presence around the middle of the field putting excellent pressure on the Kildorrery side winning plenty possession for Kilworth. Kilworths half back line Mikey Gowen, Shane O’ Brien and Jason Twomey ensured the ball did not near the Kilworth goals, displaying great defence. At this stage of the game discipline would be key for Kilworth. A goal in the 32nd minute from Leo Coffey put the game to bed giving them a lead of 10 points. Tremendous effort was put in by every Kilworth player on the field and as the final whistle blew Kilworth got the win they deserved. Kilworth now relish the challenge of playing in the North Cork Hurling Final as they await the winners of Newtownshandrum and Ballyhea. The club would like to congratulate everyone involved on Friday, from the management to the players on a fantastic win.
