Junior A footballers return to championship off to a success!
Kilworth 1.10 – Grange 0.08

On a foggy Friday night, our junior A footballers travelled over the road to Mitchelstown to take on near neighbours Grange in the first round of the Synergy Credit Union JAFC. Grange were first to get their name on the scoreboard with a ball over the bar. A Will Condon free saw Kilworth follow shortly with a point of their own, followed by a point from Brian Sheehan which was answered quickly by Grange. Will Condon got his name on the scoring sheet again with his second point of the game. Grange got a point to level the sides 3 a piece at the first water interval. Quick off the mark Noely Mac scored to see Kilworth lead by a point in the 20th minute. A good block from full back Tommo Twomey in front of the Grange goals and great defending from the backs saw neither side score for 7 minutes. Grange eventually got a point and unfortunately a goal chance by Brian Sheehan was denied by the Grange goalie. Another point by Will Condon saw Kilworth lead by one on the scoreline of 0.05 – 0.04 when the half-time whistle blew.

Whilst a goal chance was denied for Kilworth in the first half, Will Condon ensured the ball hit the back of the Grange net and added a point to see Kilworth leading by 5 points in the 39th minute. Brian Sheehan added another point to the scoreboard. Will Condon added another point giving Kilworth a 7 point lead. 13 minutes into the second half, Grange got themselves on the scoreboard scoring 3 points in a row to reduce the margin to 4 points between the sides. Will Condon got Kilworth back on track with a good pass from James McCarthy. Teamwork from Nathan Byrne and Liam Whelan resulted in Nathan pointing, which would be Kilworth’s final score of the game. Grange responded quickly with a point of their own, reducing the gap to 5 points. Time was nearing the end of the match, Kilworth displayed good possession of the ball which Grange won back to attempt a last minute score but a save from Bob Allen right before the final whistle blew, resulted in the 5 point win for Kilworth on the fulltime scoreline of 1.10 – 0.08. Well done to all involved, great to have this championship off to a flying start. Kilworth will face Ballyhooly in the next round of the JAFC.
