HURLERS PREAPRE TO DO BATTLE WITH INNISCARRA

Cork County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-final – Kilworth V Inniscarra on Sunday September 29th2019 in Pairc Uí Rinn @ 2:00pm.

This Sunday there can only be one place for us all to be and that’s Pairc Uí Rinn for the highly anticipated semi-final clash between Kilworth and Inniscarra in this year’s Cork County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.

When Kilworth take to the field in Sundays Premier Intermediate Hurling semi-final against Inniscarra, they will become the first team from the village to compete at this stage of the championship since August 17th 1969. We would hope however that the result will be somewhat different this time around as on that occasion 50 years ago, the men in red gave best to an impressive Youghal side at the Athletics Grounds in Cork.

Kilworth came into the game in confident mood following an impressive 10 point first round win over Shamrocks (6-08 to 2-10) and a one point quarter final victory over Nemo Rangers in Carrigtwohill.

Youghal had a formidable side in the 60’s and had been unlucky to lose out in the finals of 1964 to Castletownroche and 1968 to St Vincents. Their side included intercounty players Pat Hegarty & Willie Walsh, both of whom lined out with Cork 3 weeks after the Kilworth game in the All Ireland Senior Hurling final defeat to Kilkenny whilst a seventeen year old Seanie O Leary, who won an All Ireland minor title that year, was selected at left half forward.

The game itself didn’t live up to the pre match expectations as Kilworth unfortunately struggled to get to grips with Youghal’s powerful play during the opening half. A number of pointed frees from Youghal kept Kilworth at arm’s length and a well taken goal from Frankie Keane in the 25th minute turned the tie decisively in the east Corkmens favour.

Kilworth upped their performance considerably on the restart. As they had done so many times, it was Kilworths half back line who led the charge. Johnny Hogan was excellent as he out hurled Youghals intercounty centre forward Willie Walsh and he was ably assisted by left half back Seanie Long and Kieran Casey who was now playing at centre field. It looked for a while like the Kilworth men might get back on terms however the difficulties for the men in red were at the other end of the field as Youghals Pat Hegarty and Johnny Ryan were far too good for the Kilworth forward line on the day. Kieran Casey did manage to get in for two opportunistic 2nd half goals however they proved too little too late as Youghal ran out 1-17 to 2-06 winners before taking the title with a merited win over Cobh in the decider.

There is sure to be very little between the two sides when we meet on Sunday. There is just 60 minutes between both sides and a possible place in the final so let’s keep everything crossed that that’s exactly where the men in red will be at 3:30pm on Sunday afternoon. The game has a 2pm throw-in and it is also part of a double header with Blarney and Fr. O’Neills playing in the second game @ 3:45pm. Both games are sure to attract big crowds so it is advised to arrive early and avoid any delays. Please come out in your red and white colours and get behind our lads once again! Our supporters are incredibly important in helping us to get over that winning line so please come out in your numbers as you have done so on many occasions. All support will be greatly appreciated. On behalf of the club we would like to wish the management of Shane, John, Damien, Aidan, Will, Seán and Darren along with the panel of players the very best of luck on Sunday. We are all behind you every step of the way! Kilworth Abú!

CORK GAA CLUB DRAW

It’s that time of year again! The new year of the Cork GAA Club Draw is almost upon us. It’s time to renew our memberships or if you haven’t joined before, now is the time to become a new member and you could win big! Remember that this draw is vital for raising funds for our club and it is very important that it is supported by as many people as possible. You can join for the year at a cost of €100 (10 draws + 2 free) or you can choose to pay monthly/ quarter yearly, etc. In order to collect the money for the draw, we need help and volunteers to come on board. A committee of ten or twelve people to collect money from just ten people each would make a huge difference and it would offer a great helping hand to the club. If you are willing to get involved and help out in any small way at all, please let us know. All help will be greatly appreciated and we would love to hear from you!

VOTES OF SYMPATHY

On behalf of the club we would like to express votes of sympathy to Drislane families Lismore and Kilworth following their recent bereavement.
