HURLERS LOSE OUT TO BALLYHEA IN CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER 2019-08-27 10:45:00

JB2HC Final – Kilworth 0-16 Ballyhea 1-15 on Friday August 23rd 2019.

Last Friday night, Kilworth made the trip back to Doneraile looking for our first North Cork Junior hurling title since 2011, almost eight years ago. A fine crowd gathered for the meeting of Kilworth and Ballyhea in this year’s junior B2 decider with John O’Leary taking charge in the centre and the ball was throw in @ 7pm for what turned out to be an exciting, close game of hurling. Kilworth made a great start with two points inside the opening minute from corner forwards Aidan Condon and Jamie Kenneally. They continued to move the ball well through the lines and our semi-final on the previous Tuesday evening looked to have stood to us as we developed a worthy 0-7 to 0-4 lead by the 11th minute. However our lead was short lived as Ballyhea got a foothold in the game and as a result of our poor marking and persistent fouling, Ballyhea went a point clear in the 21st minute, 0-8 to 0-7. Sean Keane drew us back level with a point from play before Ballyhea got back in front a few seconds later. Kilworth finished the half strongly and two frees from Shane O’Brien and Daniel O’Regan put us in front by the smallest of margins at the half-time break, 0-10 to 0-09.

Kilworth had the worst possible start to the second half, conceding a goal inside the first minute as Ballyhea broke through the defence to go 1-09 to 0-10 clear. However, there was no need to panic and we responded well to the goal with Jamie Kenneally and Daniel O’Regan drawing us back level for the fifth time in the game before O’Regan put us a point clear again in the 36th minute, 1-09 to 0-13. Kilworth had a number of chances to go further clear but instead with twelve minutes remaining it was the opposition who went in front with a two point cushion, 1-13 to 0-14. Kilworth had a number of chances which they failed to convert but a lifeline came out way in the 30th minute when we were awarded a penalty after Ned O’Brien was fouled inside the small rectangle. Shane O’Brien stepped up to take the penalty but unfortunately it was saved on the line by the goalkeeper and cleared down the field by the Ballyhea defence. Again Kilworth had all the ball for the three minutes of injury time but it wasn’t to be and unfortunately we were defeated on the night on the score line of 1-15 to 0-16. It was a great game of hurling, full of excitement from start to finish and the end result could easily have gone our way but on the night Ballyhea just edged it. The boys gave it their all from the first minute right up until the final whistle and they can be very proud of their effort. On behalf of the club we would like to commiserate with the players and their management of Kieran Sheedy, Labhras Flynn and Noel O’Brien but we wish you all the best going forward.
