FOOTBALLERS PROGRESS TO SEMI-FINAL AGAINST FERMOY

JAFC QF – Kilworth 3-12, Charleville 1-07

It’s on to the semi-final we march after a comprehensive win over Charleville in the junior ‘A’ football championship quarter-final last Friday night at Shanballymore. The game started slowly with both sides failing to capitalise on some early scoring chances and after 12 minutes of play, the sides were deadlocked at 0-2 apiece. A minute later, some daylight was put between the sides when Kilworth got their first goal of the game. Eoin McGrath won the ball in midfield before laying it off to Eoin Carey who then passed it off to Noel McNamara who quickly found the back of the Charleville net to put us 1-2 to 0-2 ahead. Just three minutes later Eoin Carey powered through the opposition’s defence to score a cracking goal with a powerful shot past the goalkeeper. This put us six points clear after the first quarter, 2-2 to 0-2. Charleville were awarded a controversial penalty in the 24th minute which they converted to reduce the gap to three, 2-2 to 1-2. However Kilworth responded well and they cancelled out the penalty with points through Eoin Carey, Nathan Byrne and Aidan Condon. At the break we led, 2-5 to 1-2.

Nathan Byrne opened the scoring of the second half with a pointed free in the 37th minute to extend our lead to seven points, 2-6 to 1-2. Charleville crawled back two points from play a minute later but that was as close as they would come for the remainder of the game. Kilworth kept the scoreboard ticking over with points through Paddy Moakley, Eoin Carey and Seán Keane before we put the game beyond doubt heading into the final quarter. Charleville looked to be coming away with the ball but some great work from Nathan Byrne saw us win back possession and a series of passes between Noel McNamara and Will Condon eventually saw Condon bury the ball to the back of the Charleville net for Kilworth’s third and final goal of the game. We now led 3-10 to 1-5. Noel McNamara and Seán Keane tagged on two further points for Kilworth which Charleville cancelled out deep into injury time. The game ended on the final score line of 3-12 to 1-07 and Kilworth were deserving winners, booking their place in the semi-final and setting up a local derby with neighbours Fermoy on the weekend of August 10th. The club would like to congratulate the management of Pat O’Brien, Maurice McNamara, Brian Tobin and Mark O’Connor along with the panel of players on a great win and we wish you the very best of luck the next day out against Fermoy in what is sure to be a tough test. Kilworth Abú!
