COUGHLAN CUP CHAMPIONS 2019 2019-07-02 14:16:00

D2HL R10 (Coughlan Cup Final) – Kilworth 2-10 Fermoy 1-12 on Sunday June 30th 2019.

On a blustery Sunday afternoon, the players and supporters of Kilworth and Fermoy met in Fermoy for our second last game in this year’s Cork County Division Two Hurling League and the game was also the Coughlan Cup Final for 2019.  As part of the game, we were proud to raise a total of €1,160 for the ‘Friends of Kieran’ fund, raising vital funds to help Kieran through his difficult battle at the moment. We would like to sincerely thank absolutely everyone who supported the cause in any way and we would especially like to thank referee Justin Murphy who donated his match day fee on the day. Thank you to Liam Kenny, John Sheehan, Arthur Coughlan and Patricia Coughlan who kindly went around the pitch on the day to collect the money. It was greatly appreciated.

Now back to the game! The first half started slowly and remained very stop-start with neither side dominating nor taking charge of the game. After 25 minutes of play, the score line read just 0-4 to 0-2 to Kilworth before Fermoy got in for the game’s first goal just before the break. Kilworth fought back with points through Noel McNamara (a 65” and a free) to leave the sides level at half time, 0-6 to 1-3. The first half was a lack lustre affair but we hoped for a vast improvement in the second half and there was certainly much more to shout about after the break!

The third quarter was tit-for-tat with Liam Whelan and Noel McNamara keeping the score line ticking over for Kilworth in the early stages. In the 16th minute we were awarded a penalty, which Noel McNamara neatly put away to the bottom corner of the Fermoy net and this put some day light between the sides. We now led 1-10 to 1-07. Fermoy responded with a point before substitute Seán Keane struck a great goal in the 26th minute to put us five points clear, 2-10 to 1-08. However, the home side never gave up and they came back at us, scoring four points and reducing the gap to just a single point. With seven minutes of injury time played at the end of the second half, it could easily have ended in a draw but credit is due to our lads who defended very well in the dying minutes and we held on for a hard fought and well deserved one point victory. Congratulations to the players and management on a great win and we now look forward to our last league game against Mallow next week. After the game, Patricia Coughlan presented the Coughlan Cup trophy to our captain Kieran Lane on behalf of the Coughlan family. There is a long standing history between the Coughlan’s and Kilworth and long may that continue. Well done again to all involved and here’s hoping this isn’t the last trophy we pick up this year! Kilworth Abú!

U21 HURLERS OFF THE MARK WITH A WIN

U21 ‘B’ Hurling Championship – Kilara Óg 2-17 Ballycastle Gaels 3-11 on Wednesday June 26th 2019.

On Wednesday June 26th, our Kilara Óg U21 hurlers took on Ballycastle Gaels (Ballyhooley/ Castletownroche) in Glanworth @ 7:30pm on a beautiful evening for hurling. It was Ballycastle who made a better start to the game, leading 1-2 to 0-4 after the first ten minutes of play. We were slow out of the blocks but stuck to within two or three points of the opposition in the early stages with points through Eoin Carey. Kilara Óg were dealt a blow in the 19th minute when we were reduced to 14 men and this was followed six minutes later by a second goal for the opposition. We now trailed 2-7 to 0-8.  We finished the half strong however, scoring two points to reduce the gap to just a single score at the break, 2-7 to 0-10.

The opening quarter of the second half toed and froed with both sides exchanging scores before Kilara Óg finally got a lucky break with an excellent goal in the 47th minute from Michael Sheehan, set up by Leo Coffey. We now led by one point, 2-10 to 1-14. A second goal came our way in the 19th minute and this put us five points clear with seven minutes of normal time left, 2-15 to 2-10. The opposition grabbed one goal back but that was as close as they came as Kilara Óg saw the game out. Both sides ended the game with 14 men as Ballycastle had a player sent off in injury for an off-the-ball incident. The final score line was 2-17 to 3-11 and we were worthy winners on the night. Every one of our lads really dug deep after the break to get back into the game and to produce an excellent winning performance. There is great talent in this team and we would like to wish the players and the management the very best of luck for the reminder of the championship. Kilara Óg Abú!
